The long, enduring process of bringing J.R. Smith to the Knicks has ended. Smith announced on Twitter Friday he'd chosen the New York Knicks.

After reports indicated earlier this week that Smith's decision was down to the Knicks or Clippers, and then that the Knicks had taken the upper hand, reports Friday indicated that the decision has been made. The New York Post reported that Smith would sign Friday with the Knicks, and will be in uniform Sunday when Linsanity faces another tough test against the Dallas Mavericks in Madison Square Garden.

Smith confirmed to Alex Kennedy of HoopsWorld Thursday that he was close to a deal with the Knicks, though he did not confirm it was done. Meanwhile, the Oregonian reports of the insane lengths both the Clippers and Knicks are going through to try and sign Smith, including sending a representative to meet Smith when he got off the plane. From the Oregonian:
Things got so interesting Thursday that Smith hopped a plane from China to LAX, arriving at the airport in the late afternoon, where he was intercepted, his camp said, by a representative for the Knicks. Smith was apparently headed later in the evening to Las Vegas, and according to a source in Smith's family, the Knicks bought a ticket for their guy and sent him along, too.

New York apparently hoped to sign Smith as he cleared Customs, and I can't say I blame them after what I heard Del Negro promised Smith.

Get this: Smith was told via text message from Del Negro, in what feels like a desperate, last-ditch effort, that he'd be -- a starter -- for the Clippers.

Start? Smith? Really?

"What I text to J.R. is between J.R. and me," Del Negro said. "We're just trying to make our team better. I think everyone on our team understands that."

So that's a little insane.

Can we take a second to note that J.R. Smith has been back in the states for less than 12 hours and was headed to Vegas? How can you not love the NBA?

Smith joining the Knicks helps bolster their depth considerably. Being able to play a second lineup of Toney Douglas/Mike Bibby, Iman Shumper, Landry Fields, and a big to pair with Amar'e Stoudemire or Tyson Chandler means the dropoff won't be as big, and the ability to keep a scorer on the floor with Melo or, ahem, Jeremy Lin on the bench helps considerably in the backcourt.

It also means the Clippers will have to go elsewhere to try and recover their scoring lost when Chauncey Billups tore his Achilles.

J.R. Smith to the Knicks

cubufffan1, I didn't know you knew JR personally.  Only someone close to him can say whether he changed after that tragic accident or not.  If you're judging him based on his on-court performance, then that's not fair.  everyone makes mistakes.  even udonis haslem got caught with weed.

Getting caught with weed is a lot different than killing your best bud in a car wreck and I was talking about his on court demeanor only, obviously.

Maybe he needed a mentor/coach that actually guided him and gave him confidence the way he really needed to instead of being in the doghouse all the time?

Then he should have went to college. NBA coaches don't have the time to coddle an immature player. The NBA should be about results, but it's not always. JR is a case of a guy getting paid without giving results. At least consistently.

The problem really is that JR can be so spectacular that you wonder why it's only once every 5 games. It's frustrating as a fan to root for a guy who will always let you down in the crunch. The guy has no heart.

In a couple years Knicks fans will hate him like us Nuggets fans do.

Yeah I mean what do the Knicks have to lose by signing Smith? Anyone in the NBA could replace Bibby's spot on the roster with guaranteed better results.

In what world are Joe Johnson and Paul Pierce shooting guards?  you named Ray Allen and Pierce, which is the shooting guard which is the small forward?  why not just add point guards too, and power forwards.  A third of your list are not shooting guards.  JR Smith is available cheap because no one has any money left now to pay the guy much more...  He played in China.  Hes a very good pickup for the Knicks. They give up nothing, add a really good long range shooter, and pure scorer, who is a great athlete, and is going to be in mid season form after playing in china.  Nothing not to like....

I think its a upgrade for the bench. They dont need to hang on to Bibby anymore. That ship has sailed. Im taking a lets see approach. The Knicks could be strong. But again they must become a Team. Real Test is when Melo back in lineup

How so?  Please articulate, with particularity, what about the presence of J.R. Smith makes the seating area"more" dangerous and what made it dangerous in the first place?

Someone already did...guess you couldn't figure out the "right sis" part.  Particular enough?
The "more" part...well even if it wasn't dangerous before, and if it is dangerous now, that still is MORE.   Like 1 is more than 0.

There are always intangibles, things outside the court that could change the mentality of an athlete in a positive way.

J.R. Smith to the Knicks

To brand this title of "poor attitude, 'thug'" to JR Smith, is irresponsible and wreckless.

No it isn't. It's what he has proven throughout his life. It's definitely not without merit. He ran a stop sign, got into a wreck and his best friend died. He never seemed to change after that, which means he doesn't get it and never will.

The kid went right from High School to the NBA-- usually us men dont start growing up til our mid 20's, and thats if we went to college.

Don't make excuses for these guys. 18 year olds are dying for their country, they are men. Just because SOME of these athletes have an arrested development doesn't mean we should excuse bad behavior. When he was in NO he battled with Byron Scott then in Denver he battled George Karl. I don't think he will change.

Knicks should just stick with Smith, resign Wilson Chandler in the summer, and trade off Melo to the Nets.

J.R. Smith to the Knicks

Why does everyone feel comfortable in being a critic and a skeptic? Regarding all sports issues. To say that this signing wasn't ATLEAST a positive is pretty much insane. In my opinion, this is a huge move by the New York Knickerbockers. In the beginning of the season, everyone knew they had the "big 3", and thats about it. Their flaw was their guard play and their bench. Now, they have very good guard play in the starting line up, and a deep bench.

JR Smith brings an attitude, which is good sometimes. He is cocky and pompous, but what NBA player isn't? These guys are the best basketball players from their towns, high schools, and colleges; it is what it is. To brand this title of "poor attitude, 'thug'" to JR Smith, is irresponsible and wreckless. The kid went right from High School to the NBA-- usually us men dont start growing up til our mid 20's, and thats if we went to college. JR is young, athletic, hungry, and a lethal scorer. He can create his own shot, get to the basket, and pull up for 3 or at the elbow with the best of them.

This is NYC! In our fun days in the 90's, we had a bunch of mean, beasts who had poor attitudes, but let it all hang out on the court. If JR wants to be mean and a punk, thats fine. As long as he's "All in" for the NY Knicks!!!

Watch out NBA!!! The Knicks are a team that no one wants to play in the playoffs.
