The long, enduring process of bringing J.R. Smith to the Knicks has ended. Smith announced on Twitter Friday he'd chosen the New York Knicks.

After reports indicated earlier this week that Smith's decision was down to the Knicks or Clippers, and then that the Knicks had taken the upper hand, reports Friday indicated that the decision has been made. The New York Post reported that Smith would sign Friday with the Knicks, and will be in uniform Sunday when Linsanity faces another tough test against the Dallas Mavericks in Madison Square Garden.

Smith confirmed to Alex Kennedy of HoopsWorld Thursday that he was close to a deal with the Knicks, though he did not confirm it was done. Meanwhile, the Oregonian reports of the insane lengths both the Clippers and Knicks are going through to try and sign Smith, including sending a representative to meet Smith when he got off the plane. From the Oregonian:
Things got so interesting Thursday that Smith hopped a plane from China to LAX, arriving at the airport in the late afternoon, where he was intercepted, his camp said, by a representative for the Knicks. Smith was apparently headed later in the evening to Las Vegas, and according to a source in Smith's family, the Knicks bought a ticket for their guy and sent him along, too.

New York apparently hoped to sign Smith as he cleared Customs, and I can't say I blame them after what I heard Del Negro promised Smith.

Get this: Smith was told via text message from Del Negro, in what feels like a desperate, last-ditch effort, that he'd be -- a starter -- for the Clippers.

Start? Smith? Really?

"What I text to J.R. is between J.R. and me," Del Negro said. "We're just trying to make our team better. I think everyone on our team understands that."

So that's a little insane.

Can we take a second to note that J.R. Smith has been back in the states for less than 12 hours and was headed to Vegas? How can you not love the NBA?

Smith joining the Knicks helps bolster their depth considerably. Being able to play a second lineup of Toney Douglas/Mike Bibby, Iman Shumper, Landry Fields, and a big to pair with Amar'e Stoudemire or Tyson Chandler means the dropoff won't be as big, and the ability to keep a scorer on the floor with Melo or, ahem, Jeremy Lin on the bench helps considerably in the backcourt.

It also means the Clippers will have to go elsewhere to try and recover their scoring lost when Chauncey Billups tore his Achilles.

J.R. Smith to the Knicks

J.R. brings D and attitude to that team kid. Think before you post."

If that wasn't so stupid it would be funny. He brings loads of attitude that's for sure, all bad. And unfortunately JR doesn't play D and I'm not sure he can even spell D. Playing D is the last thing he thinks of.

He is a consistant scorer who can hit threes but also take the ball to the basket which makes him versitile

I know that nobody except people in Denver watch the Nuggets but you guys have no idea who JR is. He is anything but consistent. He is the poster boy for "inconsistent". Here's what you can expect from JR. Occasionally he will be spectacular. Insanely, out-of -this-world spectacular. But only for maybe 5 games then the rest will be filled with a few nice plays but also some bad plays. Then the majority of the Knicks remaining games will be JR acting un-interested and seemingly not having any idea of what constitues a good shot. Turning the ball over, tuning out teammates and jacking up half court threes.

Do not expect anything else. Most Nuggets fans hated the dude at the end and couldn't wait for him to leave.

J.R. Smith to the Knicks

Yeah Smith is a legit shooter. Not one of the best but good. Word is that one of the 3 stooges(Bibby, Balkman, or Douglas) will be cut to make room. Likely Bibby.

JR.....another former Nuggets problem

The Knicks seem real eager to take on all of the Nuggets' former problems and make them their own.

J.R. Smith to the Knicks

This should be a positive for the knicks. He is a consistant scorer who can hit threes but also take the ball to the basket which makes him versitile. Also, that gives them way more depth at guard. A week ago they had nothing, now Lin is showing he can run the point and Smith can do a lot of things as well, that takes pressure of Fields and Shumper to play a more realistic role as bench guys rather than logging heavy starting minutes like earlier in the year. Then you still have Baron Davis who will eventually be cleared to play, who knows what he could do, anything positive is a bonus and if he isn't great they have made the changes to account for that.
If the team can build some chemistry the knicks probably have the talent to move up anywhere from 6th to 3rd place.

J.R. Smith to the Knicks

"Wow balla whatever your silly name is you really know it all huh? Name us 14 better shooting guards than J.R. Smith. Can't? Then don't post things that you can't prove fool. J.R. brings D and attitude to that team kid. Think before you post."

Good point.  I can barely name 14 better shooting guards than JR.  You do realize that my point is it's a great move for the knicks because he's a great player right?  I've actually loved the guy since his tenure in Denver.  but the thing is, my point is that someone with JR's skills would not be available for 2.5 million right now and signing JR is an awesome move.  maybe we can agree on that at least?

And you're right, he does bring some D and attitude - but he's brought in mostly because of his ability to shoot the 3 and create his own offense - something that we really, really need.

If i had to try:

dwade, kobe, manu, harden, paul pierce, ray allen, monta ellis, kevin martin, andre iguodala, joe johnson, jason terry, eric gordon, tyreke evans and lou williams.

J.R. Smith to the Knicks

I would have liked to see him go to LA to help out CP3 and Blake and add on depth for the SG position there. Can't help but root for the Clips this year. He fits in well with the Knicks too, but I just hope is attitude won't negatively impact the team in any way. Luckily, he already has some chemistry with Melo. However, they HAVE TO, HAVE TO, both he and Melo, gel and accept Linsanity, the way that A'mare already has. Then they will be a dangerous team to contend in the East.

Watch out fans... JR's sister will be in the stands.  He might just be the log that lays on the track to slow down this Knicks Train!! I would have let someone else have his ugly, tatooed a**.

How so?  Please articulate, with particularity, what about the presence of J.R. Smith makes the seating area"more" dangerous and what made it dangerous in the first place?
