Kobe Bryant told reporters Friday that he believes the constant trade rumors surrounding Pau Gasol have negatively impacted him. From the Los Angeles Times:
Though it appears pointing out a discrepancy involves splitting hairs, Bryant believes reports linking Gasol in a trade has made it "an emotional couple of days for him."

"Personally I don't understand that crap," Bryant said regarding the Lakers' effort to trade Gasol. "But it is what it is. It's important for him to know we support him. I support him especially. I just want him to go out there and play hard and do what he does best for us."

Now that's nothing new, with Gasol having off-court issues affect his performance as they did during an understandably rough time in the playoffs last spring. But it is telling that both Bryant and Gasol are not denying that he's on the block or being shopped constantly. This is yet another impact of the vetoed Chris Paul trade and subsequent fallout.

The Lakers took a step backward when they were forced to trade Lamar Odom because of his sense of betrayal over being involved in the Paul deal David Stern vetoed. In order to overcome that, the Lakers are considering a trade, which will have to involve Gasol due to the low value of their supporting players, ownership's belief in Andrew Bynum, and the fact they have to trade for a significant upgrade at the star level and not role players support. So Gasol is discussed, and with media so prevalent, rumors get out, as well as I'm sure discussions being held with Gasol regarding this situation.

For his part, Gasol says things are not affecting him, that he's blocking it out and playing, and to be fair, his numbers aren't significantly down, outside of his field goal percentage which is below 50 percent for the first time in nearly a decade. But there's an impact, and it's continuing to keep the Lakers out of the elite tier of teams. Until this situation is resolved one way or another, Gasol will have to play through it.

Unless you can trade Bynum for Howard (so the Magic get something pretty good instead of nothing when he goes FA at year end), KEEP Kobe AND Gasol and Bynum.  Use the cap exception to get a good but not overly expensive PG, maybe someone like Ramon Sessions or Calderone.  Is Steve Nash a possibility?  He's at the end of his career, but maybe the Lakers can afford him.  The current group with Steve Nash would be amazing.  And Nash might want to win one before he retires.

Do you really think this team can win as is, do you think they would have had a better team with CP instead of Gasol. Lakers need a point guard plain and simpple. If they can get one without giving up Pau that would be great but they need to do something to have a chance this year.

crunch time- you make me laugh.  your Celtics have had 3 or 4 good years since the big three era, that 3 or 4 of about the last 25 years!  lol, the lakers have had contending teams for about  18 of the last 25 years and won MANY rings since then...

And why do you think your Lakers started winning again? They stole a center from the tough styled eastern conference. Don't you remember Shaq? Btw..if Garnett doesn't get hurt in 09 and Perkins in game 7 of 2010, the Celtics 3 peat. Not making excuses but rather pointing out the obvious!

Man all my Lakers need to do is acquire a PG with half a brain that can run the pick and roll. He doesn't need to be an allstar. He needs to be able to compliment the big guys to play to their strengths with this new offense

This is a good comment! At the same time, they do need a better bench but a good pg that could run the pick and roll would make a huge impact. They could get away without a pg in Phil's system but not with Brown.

He needs to be able to compliment the big guys to play to their strengths with this new offense. You can't run Browns offense without a decent PG. They have the 9 mill trade exeception, find a decent guy that can actually run our offense and put Fish out of his misery on the bench with the 2nd unit.

The Lakers got screwed on the CP3 deal.

With that done, is it not better to try to win now with Kobe and this bunch?  Maybe they have one more in them.  The Green almost pulled it off with players this old.
I think they need to put the Pau rumors away and let this team jell.  They have a small window left , as Kobe still looks decent

I actually respect Kobe here...

He is saying "get over yourself and play basketball.  If you get traded so be it.  Quit moping around and play hard."

Maybe this will inspire Gasol to lose his Ga-soft alter ego he seemingly found all over again.
