Chucking the basketball at the chest of an NBA referee while angrily disputing a call: It's one of those things that you just can't do without hearing from the NBA league office.

Boston Celtics All-Star point guard Rajon Rondo was ejected from a Sunday night game against the Pistons in Detroit for throwing the basketball at referee Sean Wright after he did not receive a foul call on a drive to the basket. The ejection -- prompted by two back-to-back technical fouls -- came in the third quarter of a 96-81 loss to the Pistons.

The NBA announced on Monday that Rondo would be suspended for two games without pay for "throwing a ball at an official and striking him in the chest."

Rondo will serve his suspension during road games against the Dallas Mavericks on Monday and Oklahoma City Thunder on Wednesday. He will be available again after the All-Star break, during a Feb. 28 game against the Cavaliers in Cleveland.

The no-call that incensed Rondo involved a hard drive into the middle of Detroit's defense that ended with Pistons center Greg Monroe contacting Rondo as he fell. Monroe's knee and leg hit a falling Rondo as he attempted to contest Rondo's shot. Contact was clearly made and Rondo lay on the ground after absording the blow, but no foul was assessed.

CSNNE.com reports that the ejection is "under review" by the league office.

In March 2011, Phoenix Suns point guard Aaron Brooks was suspended one game for throwing the ball at an official. In January 2012, Utah Jazz forward Derrick Favors was fined $25,000 but not issued a suspension after being ejected for throwing the ball towards the opponent's bench.

I'll agree with what a lot of you have said, crappy no call, and the ref is a baby for tossing Rondo. That was not "throwing the ball at the ref." In this case I think Rondo held his composure extremely well. Refs like this are what give the NBA its reputation of pandering to stars and big-money markets while everybody else gets screwed.

The NBA is looking pretty lousy right now.

Rajon Rondo to be suspended for ball toss at ref?

So the official is looking at Rajon Rondo...  Rondo looks back at him and then tosses (I would not call it a heave or thrown very hard) towards the official who doesn't even attempt to catch the ball and Rando is getting in trouble for that?  Pretty weak if you ask me.  I don't care that Rondo got thrown out because I am sure he was saying the major words but to punish a guy for basically doing what any other NBA player does EVERYTIME is over the top!

Rajon Rondo to be suspended for ball toss at ref?

Given Rondo's penchant for dirty play (Ex A: his hard foul on the Bull's Miller in the post-season), this is humorous. Should be suspension for his action for the ref; and yes, it should've been called.

Rajon Rondo to be suspended for ball toss at ref?

how hard is it to actually make an effort to CATCH THE BALL? any person whose mind is "in the game" would have caught that ball. this speaks to "presence" and obvious ref ignorance
I did not watch the game, so I wont comment on the officiating...but the ref was in the process of making a call, so no, he was not looking for the ball when Rondo threw it/tossed it/chucked it (pick your phrase) and, given the situation, I do not believe this was just a "hey, I didn't realize the ref wasn't looking when I tried to give him the ball" thing.  Rondo could have, maybe should have, just dropped the ball rather thant he little underhand whip he did to an official he was looking at, but who was clearly not looking for him.

Hardly the "crime of the century" but he will likely catch a 1 game suspension and, imo, he should.

If anybody should've got tossed from the game, it should be the ref for not blowing the whistle on Monroe. Rondo was clearly fouled in front of the ref & didn't call a foul. He must be a Pistons fan.

Rajon Rondo to be suspended for ball toss at ref?

Seriously, wasn't the officiating or lack of enough of a punishment?  Throwing the ball or tossing the ball? It was a toss; the ref actually could have caught it. There is no doubt Rondo was frustrated and it was not how I would want my son to act. But, the truth is, the Referees look like they were the ones on strike this year. They have been really inconsistent. From letting traveling calls go when someone makes a breakaway dunk, to calling a walk out of the blue. It is really hit or miss with these guys. The Celtics were called for 31 fouls while the home team Pistons was caught just 19 times. That was 18 more points from the line.  It is tough to win any game with that type of disparity. It will not matter I do believe he will be suspended. It just might be a message to Mark Cuban and the Mavericks, Boston’s next opponents.
Targeting our officials will not be tolerated. Some say he will not get be suspended because he is playing the Mavericks and Stern hates Cuban. I say the opposite; Stern will not want to hear Cuban complain about double standards. So I expect 1 game suspension. The referees better try to at least be consistent before something regrettable happens.
