Chucking the basketball at the chest of an NBA referee while angrily disputing a call: It's one of those things that you just can't do without hearing from the NBA league office.

Boston Celtics All-Star point guard Rajon Rondo was ejected from a Sunday night game against the Pistons in Detroit for throwing the basketball at referee Sean Wright after he did not receive a foul call on a drive to the basket. The ejection -- prompted by two back-to-back technical fouls -- came in the third quarter of a 96-81 loss to the Pistons.

The NBA announced on Monday that Rondo would be suspended for two games without pay for "throwing a ball at an official and striking him in the chest."

Rondo will serve his suspension during road games against the Dallas Mavericks on Monday and Oklahoma City Thunder on Wednesday. He will be available again after the All-Star break, during a Feb. 28 game against the Cavaliers in Cleveland.

The no-call that incensed Rondo involved a hard drive into the middle of Detroit's defense that ended with Pistons center Greg Monroe contacting Rondo as he fell. Monroe's knee and leg hit a falling Rondo as he attempted to contest Rondo's shot. Contact was clearly made and Rondo lay on the ground after absording the blow, but no foul was assessed. reports that the ejection is "under review" by the league office.

In March 2011, Phoenix Suns point guard Aaron Brooks was suspended one game for throwing the ball at an official. In January 2012, Utah Jazz forward Derrick Favors was fined $25,000 but not issued a suspension after being ejected for throwing the ball towards the opponent's bench.

Rajon Rondo to be suspended for ball toss at ref?

Not an NBA fan & this action personifies almost all the reasons. League officials allow poor & inconsistent officiating to go on in order to promote star play and keep games close, not neccessarily to promote parity, but to keep viewers tuned in. Unfortunately, it has the opposite effect, it frustrates the non-diehard fan and based on last night's scene, it has that effect on the players, also.
I tuned into the Thunder-Nuggets game for two minutes and saw three fouls on the Nuggets, two of which were on Andre Miller. There are several points I'd like to make about that wasted snippet of my life. 1) While there were fouls occurring, only one was accurately called. The home teams was getting a pass. 2) The Nuggets were poised to make a run and Andre Miller was on fire. The officials totally shut down Miller and the Nuggets. 3) The worst part of the whole segment was a shooting foul called on Miller that A) was not a foul unless it was offensive and B) the player never even hinted at going up for a shot.
I won't call out Rondo for his behavior, not because I approve, but because it astounds me that it doesn't occur more often. For me, it's impossible to take this league seriously when every time I get bored and give it another chance, the guys in stripes do something that totally disrupts the flow of the game without justification.

Rajon Rondo to be suspended for ball toss at ref?

a) not a celtic fan.
b) rondo was CLEARLY mugged. for whatever reason, the ref CHOSE not to call a foul. how hard is it to actually make an effort to CATCH THE BALL? any person whose mind is "in the game" would have caught that ball. this speaks to "presence" and obvious ref ignorance or, it appears so in this case, bias. regarding whatmatters... i seem to remember a MESS of times rondo has played hurt, with pain that I'M SURE you would have been screaming about, much less made an effort to actually do ANYTHING other than stay in bed. knowing that selective memories abound in many areas (sports, politics, religion, etc.), it's sad to see each time it occurs. i suggest biotin, DHA, vitamins Bs & E, CoQ10 and/or ginko.

Ummm, Santa Claus...

Did you not see Monroe jump on top of him and knee him in the head???

It was clearly a foul that needed to be called. Those refs were not on their game during the entire game!

As a Lakers fan, I enjoy watching the Celtics lose but the whole Rondo throwing the ball at the ref is a joke.  It was, at best, a toss.  Maybe the ref was too busy making the call or he just doesn't have any game!  The ejection was more than enough because Rondo was fouled and the ref had his blinders on!!!

And when you have a team full of hacks -- even minus Big Hack Davis and Perkins -- you're gonna get called for a ton of fouls. They coach their players to hack (they call it "physical play") and then wonder why they are called for fouls? Hilarious.

Sorry, this team is just not good enough to get away with it any longer. Time to figure out how to play defense without shoving. You can try coaching that, Doc, can't you?

Three things that are definite in life. Death, taxes, and Boston fans whining about EVERYTHING.

Wow no wonder he was angry last night. What terrible officiating the man literally jumped on his back. I've noticed the quality of officiating has been worst this year than in past years, the NBA really needs to dump these idiots and get new ones.

Uh, throwing the basketball at the ref? Yeah, that's a suspension, no doubt.

Time for angry Rondo and the rest of the underperforming, overpaid Celtics to show respect to the league. They're no longer contenders, no longer relevant, yet they get away with countless hacks and travels. And they're biting the hand that feeds them.

Rondo always been a whiny, garbage player. He's Garnett without the toughness.

Rajon Rondo to be suspended for ball toss at ref?

My son and I were at the game last night, neither one of us are Celtics or Pistons fans. Had a chance to go for free, so we went. The officiating was horrible. It got to the point where the Pistons totally abandoned the outside game and drove the ball to the basket everytime knowing that there was a good chance they'd end up at the line. First Doc Rivers was T'd up then Chris Wilcox. You could see the frustration building up in the Celtics. Up to when Rajon Rondo was ejected you could sense something was going to happen. I told my son that there might be some fighting tonight. Luckily that didn't happen but it was just an ugly game. This is why the NBA will never get any of my hard earned money!

Did Rondo really need to be ejected for an underhand pass to the official? Pointless. Another example of how bad the officiating is in this league. The free-throw totals prove it.
