Chucking the basketball at the chest of an NBA referee while angrily disputing a call: It's one of those things that you just can't do without hearing from the NBA league office.

Boston Celtics All-Star point guard Rajon Rondo was ejected from a Sunday night game against the Pistons in Detroit for throwing the basketball at referee Sean Wright after he did not receive a foul call on a drive to the basket. The ejection -- prompted by two back-to-back technical fouls -- came in the third quarter of a 96-81 loss to the Pistons.

The NBA announced on Monday that Rondo would be suspended for two games without pay for "throwing a ball at an official and striking him in the chest."

Rondo will serve his suspension during road games against the Dallas Mavericks on Monday and Oklahoma City Thunder on Wednesday. He will be available again after the All-Star break, during a Feb. 28 game against the Cavaliers in Cleveland.

The no-call that incensed Rondo involved a hard drive into the middle of Detroit's defense that ended with Pistons center Greg Monroe contacting Rondo as he fell. Monroe's knee and leg hit a falling Rondo as he attempted to contest Rondo's shot. Contact was clearly made and Rondo lay on the ground after absording the blow, but no foul was assessed.

CSNNE.com reports that the ejection is "under review" by the league office.

In March 2011, Phoenix Suns point guard Aaron Brooks was suspended one game for throwing the ball at an official. In January 2012, Utah Jazz forward Derrick Favors was fined $25,000 but not issued a suspension after being ejected for throwing the ball towards the opponent's bench.

Rajon Rondo to be suspended for ball toss at ref?

As a Magic fan....I HATE RONDO AND THE CELTICS...but the game ejection is enough punishment. He tossed the ball at the ref. It's not like he whipped it into his face when he wasn't looking.

Well, if you're going to do something like this Rondo couldn't have picked a better time. Boston plays the Mavericks next. David Stern hates the Mavericks. The chances Rondo gets suspended are low because of that.

And for the record, that non call was ridiculous. Rondo was angry for a reason, and it is not like he threw the ball at the ref at full velocity.

I'm more interested in what the NBA will do with the referee for not calling a foul.  Mark Cuban is right.....there is NO accountability.  Perhaps if Rondo knew the guy was going to get a bad performance review and possibly fired at the end of the season he wouldn't feel the need to do something about it himself.  But that's not how the NBA works.  The fact that Joey Crawford is still has a job and even refs NBA Finals games is evidence that there is a huge problem with referee evaluations.

Rajon Rondo to be suspended for ball toss at ref?

Looked to me like he was throwing the ball to him, not at him.

Also, how is there not a foul called against Detroit on that play? If that's not a foul, then I'm really not sure what is.
It don't matter that Rondo was throwing the ball to the ref or at him, the point is that the ball end up hitting the ref. To most people it look that Rondo did not care for the non call, so he throw the ball at the ref in a fit of anger..

It's no secret if you been watch NBA for some time that Ref will make mistakes, sometime the mistakes are so stupid you wonder if the ref is deaf, dumb and blind. There have to be a reason why he did not see the foul against Detroit on the play

Rajon Rondo to be suspended for ball toss at ref?

Rondo - and the rest of the Celtics - were obviously frustrated because of the incredibly huge free throw disparity in this game. By the end of the game, the Celtics shot 15 free throws while the Pistons shot 46. Yes, you are reading that right: 15 to 46. It was actually even worse than that sounds through much of the game, because they did start giving the Celtics some calls in the 4th quarter when this was becoming a blowout. Rondo was ejected towards the end of the 3rd. 46 free throws. That number is more than half of what some teams average for a points total per game. In order for a team to rack up 46 free throws, the refs have to pretty much be calling every bit of contact for them. Meanwhile, Rondo had contact here on his shot and drive and was then teabagged in the back of his head and onto the floor by another guy: no call. Anyone on the bad end of this officiating would be upset. That's really what the NBA should be spending their time looking at before it happens to another team.

What a joke this year with the nba refs... Look at the free throw attempts that game.. They don't call any real fouls and they eject people for returning the ball to the ref with a underhand lob...

Terrible job by the referee on the no call but even worse job by Rondo. He is the leader of an aging and struggling team and  has to make sure he is not tossed from the game and probably suspended for another. A class act up till yesterday he is by no means a thug and a hell of a player.

This is weak. Rondo got hacked, was clearly displeased, but all he did was flick the ball at the ref.  There's a big difference between "throwing it at the ref" and doing what Rondo did.  This would be some pretty ticky-tack B.S. if Rondo got suspended for it.

The officials made bad calls all the way around.  The NBA has to make an unpopular decision because Rondo did throw the ball and they have to do something to show they mean business.  If Kobe can get hammered $100k for saying f****t, Rondo has to get a $50K fine for his behavior.

Rondo is stuck on a bad team and he also has a bad attitude to begin with.  Go Celtics.

Someone wake up Golliver.  The guy landed on top of a crouched Rondo, who was slammed to the floor by the move.  This was more WWE than NBA, and we should applaud Rondo for showing so much restraint after that non-call.
