Chucking the basketball at the chest of an NBA referee while angrily disputing a call: It's one of those things that you just can't do without hearing from the NBA league office.

Boston Celtics All-Star point guard Rajon Rondo was ejected from a Sunday night game against the Pistons in Detroit for throwing the basketball at referee Sean Wright after he did not receive a foul call on a drive to the basket. The ejection -- prompted by two back-to-back technical fouls -- came in the third quarter of a 96-81 loss to the Pistons.

The NBA announced on Monday that Rondo would be suspended for two games without pay for "throwing a ball at an official and striking him in the chest."

Rondo will serve his suspension during road games against the Dallas Mavericks on Monday and Oklahoma City Thunder on Wednesday. He will be available again after the All-Star break, during a Feb. 28 game against the Cavaliers in Cleveland.

The no-call that incensed Rondo involved a hard drive into the middle of Detroit's defense that ended with Pistons center Greg Monroe contacting Rondo as he fell. Monroe's knee and leg hit a falling Rondo as he attempted to contest Rondo's shot. Contact was clearly made and Rondo lay on the ground after absording the blow, but no foul was assessed.

CSNNE.com reports that the ejection is "under review" by the league office.

In March 2011, Phoenix Suns point guard Aaron Brooks was suspended one game for throwing the ball at an official. In January 2012, Utah Jazz forward Derrick Favors was fined $25,000 but not issued a suspension after being ejected for throwing the ball towards the opponent's bench.

I thought David Stern hired a ton of African American referees as of late so the players would have more respect for the position?

Looks as if Stern was wrong.

As a Heat fan I can't stand the Celtics. But Rondo could have gotten really hurt when that guy jumped on his back. It should have been a foul and Rondo had every right to be mad. Granted he should have walked away, but how many of us would have loved to throw the ball at those cheating David Stern refs.

The ref's know when Kobe barks at them not to say a word. The difference in free throw attempts shows that more ref's need to go to jail. David Stern is a pimp. At least WWE had a better storyline.

Rondo is a douche.  Way to hurt your team, Punk.  I am trying to picture Chris Paul, Steve Nash, or Tony Parker throwing the ball at an official, and I just can't see it.  Sit there in the second tier of point guards Rondo.  You hurt your team, and you CANNOT shoot.

Rajon Rondo got off easy

He should have been suspended for at least ten games, but the NBA needs its stars in East Coast markets to be on the court.

The refs often suck; they have good days and bad days.  They are human, and subject to the same biases, ups, and downs as anyone else.  However, all sports is predicated upon the referee being the sole arbiter and not being subject to any violent behavior from fans, players, or coaches.  Rondo may or may not have been justified in eating a clove of garlic and getting in the ref's face, but you simply cannot strike a referee, period.

The NBA should add a very hefty fine to this punishemnt, and let players know that, no matter how bad of a game the ref is having, and how angry you are, you cannot ever strike a ref, whether it is with a hand, a fist, or a basketball.

Rondo is just mad that the Pistons have become better. They thought they were going to come in there and beat them. Boston got crushed, and wait to pistons get into the playoffs.

Not a Boston or a Rondo fan at all, but 2 games is pretty harsh for this. Horrible officiating.

If you don't watch any NBA games how can you call a player a punk punk?
