Chucking the basketball at the chest of an NBA referee while angrily disputing a call: It's one of those things that you just can't do without hearing from the NBA league office.

Boston Celtics All-Star point guard Rajon Rondo was ejected from a Sunday night game against the Pistons in Detroit for throwing the basketball at referee Sean Wright after he did not receive a foul call on a drive to the basket. The ejection -- prompted by two back-to-back technical fouls -- came in the third quarter of a 96-81 loss to the Pistons.

The NBA announced on Monday that Rondo would be suspended for two games without pay for "throwing a ball at an official and striking him in the chest."

Rondo will serve his suspension during road games against the Dallas Mavericks on Monday and Oklahoma City Thunder on Wednesday. He will be available again after the All-Star break, during a Feb. 28 game against the Cavaliers in Cleveland.

The no-call that incensed Rondo involved a hard drive into the middle of Detroit's defense that ended with Pistons center Greg Monroe contacting Rondo as he fell. Monroe's knee and leg hit a falling Rondo as he attempted to contest Rondo's shot. Contact was clearly made and Rondo lay on the ground after absording the blow, but no foul was assessed.

CSNNE.com reports that the ejection is "under review" by the league office.

In March 2011, Phoenix Suns point guard Aaron Brooks was suspended one game for throwing the ball at an official. In January 2012, Utah Jazz forward Derrick Favors was fined $25,000 but not issued a suspension after being ejected for throwing the ball towards the opponent's bench.

How do you miss a giant man hgurlding over someone and not making it and sending them to the ground. That "non-call" was atrocious and I really cannot blame Rondo for getting angry. He got knocked down hard.  He had every right to run his mouth and question the call. The ref was so busy reacting to Rondo's comments how could he possibly see a something as tiny as a freakin' basketball coming at him, less whistle and more hands and he could have easily caugh that ball, the video actually makes him look pretty foolish, with the reaction time of one of those zombies in The Walking Dead. 2 games...really? I'd be Okay with 1, and the ref can sit out the other for blowing the call and reacting like a spoiled child.

This guy is a punk. There was no foul by the guy who trampled Rondo after the shot. Only after the ball was on the way down was contact made with the person who jumped ovr him. The contact was with the guy who Rondo dove into. Rondo's trajectory was 2 feet off to the left and the blocker got ball, while he jumped backwards and Rondo tried some acting job. NBA is dumb. College is much better and the refs actually let the players play and you don't get the crying, I was brushed on the knuckle by the non-shooting hand, give me 2 free throws. I'm proud to say that I have not watched one NBA game this year, only these clips and an occassional SC. College BB is way better this year and I don't intend on going back.

that is INSANE!  if the ref had actually attempted to CATCH THE BALL instead of letting it hit his chest, there would have been no problem.  the refs have been getting worse and worse over the years-and the NBA isn't even trying to take responsibility for the actions!

How is this even a discussion?  Rondo was an idiot for throwing the ball at the ref.  If he could aim at the hoop as well as he targeted the gut of that referee he would be the best point guard in the league.  I never understand how a little guy plays his whole life and doesn't develop a mid range and outside shot.  It' s like a 7 footer not being able to dunk.  Obviously he has some mad skills and not being able to shoot just boggles my freaking mind man!!!!

However, I do not agree with a two game suspension!  He should have received a technical foul!  If he acted up again during this game he then should have been rejected!
He already had 1 technical foul for arguing the non-call, the second T was for throwing the ball -- which comes with an automatic ejection.  The NBA just added the suspension on top.  Personally, I am fine with the suspension although I probably would have made it only a 1 game suspension.

I am ok with suspension but that missed call was so bad that the ref should be suspended as well. Rondo was flattened!

As a long time Celts fan I'm troubled by this immature action by Rondo!  However, I do not agree with a two game suspension!  He should have received a technical foul!  If he acted up again during this game he then should have been rejected!  I understand the refs need to have control of the game but a T would have made the ref's point!  After all he was mauled on the play!

I say if Rondo has to face two game suspension he gets a  DO-OVER.  That toss to the ref was not a two game suspension.

Make it the halftime show tonight.  Ref has to stay still and the Rondo gets one crack at him from 10 ft away. Cool

That's the type of thing as a professional you let go and don't let bias you the rest of the game.
Spot freaking on...  maybe a warning AT THE MOST.  Too often, in many sports, refs seems a little too personaly invovled.  As you said, as a professional you shrug the little stuff off... Rondo keeps yapping or says some magic words, then T him up.

Bah, this was a silly one.
