Chucking the basketball at the chest of an NBA referee while angrily disputing a call: It's one of those things that you just can't do without hearing from the NBA league office.

Boston Celtics All-Star point guard Rajon Rondo was ejected from a Sunday night game against the Pistons in Detroit for throwing the basketball at referee Sean Wright after he did not receive a foul call on a drive to the basket. The ejection -- prompted by two back-to-back technical fouls -- came in the third quarter of a 96-81 loss to the Pistons.

The NBA announced on Monday that Rondo would be suspended for two games without pay for "throwing a ball at an official and striking him in the chest."

Rondo will serve his suspension during road games against the Dallas Mavericks on Monday and Oklahoma City Thunder on Wednesday. He will be available again after the All-Star break, during a Feb. 28 game against the Cavaliers in Cleveland.

The no-call that incensed Rondo involved a hard drive into the middle of Detroit's defense that ended with Pistons center Greg Monroe contacting Rondo as he fell. Monroe's knee and leg hit a falling Rondo as he attempted to contest Rondo's shot. Contact was clearly made and Rondo lay on the ground after absording the blow, but no foul was assessed.

CSNNE.com reports that the ejection is "under review" by the league office.

In March 2011, Phoenix Suns point guard Aaron Brooks was suspended one game for throwing the ball at an official. In January 2012, Utah Jazz forward Derrick Favors was fined $25,000 but not issued a suspension after being ejected for throwing the ball towards the opponent's bench.

Rajon Rondo suspended 2 games for ref ball toss

I am a Knicks fan, and therefore by birth hate the Celtics. That being said he deserved a T and maybe an ejection, but that's it. It's not like he fired the ball at the ref. All Rondo did was flip the ball to the official. Granted he should not have done that, and it should have gotten him T'd up or tossed, but getting suspended 2 games for that is ridiculous. Stern is a douche whose time has come. He and his minions including the refs do nothing but hurt the game.

Linktebo...while some of what you say is true. The reason you never see a ball player throw a baseball at an umpire is because it's a BASEBALL! You really think a ref would stand there and let a player whip a ball in at him? On the other hand, a basketball...who is going to get hurt by a basketball. And for your point about being ejected. Two words. Milton Bradley! Sure, he won't throw things at the umpire, but whill just about toss anything out onto the field that's not nailed to the ground. And yeah, he got suspended. This is just the NBA player's being Whiney little baby's because calls don't go their way. Which should come to NO surprise for anyone who watches the NBA compared to any other sport. For being the so called "best athletes"(LMAO), they sure do alot of bitching.

oh wait, don't want to be exposed for being impartial haters...I would be the first one to say it if a suspension was warranted.. if you think that deserves two games you are just saying so because you hate a team..that is why these sites and post boards honestly suck, because people can never be objective..let me know when any of you have 17 titles....and in your city of origin, not 5 titles bogarted from another place..you know who you are
Yea, you sound really really impartial.  Please explain how Boston having 17 titles and other teams having less (regardless of the number of cities played in) has ANY CONNECTION WHATSOEVER to Rondo getting suspended for getting two Ts and throwing the ball at the ref?  I'll help you, it doesn't.  Throw the ball at the ref = suspension, its not that hard to figure out whether your favorite team as 0 titles or 17.

people at the game that said the officiating was horrible, just look at that play and the final free throw totals. Yet, the NBA suspends Rondo and does nothing to hold the officials responsible.
Well when the refs start throwing the ball at players because the refs are "frustrated" or "emotional" then the league will start suspending, or more likely firing, the refs.  Other than that the refs are "held responsible" for their performance in much the same way that players are -- bad performance, no playoffs and maybe no job the next season.  Disagree all you want with the officiating, it does not excuse what Rondo did and a suspension was merited -- I probably would have gone for 1 game if I were the commissioner, but 2 is reasonable.

Ref was asking for it, not making that call should get HIM suspended.  Monroe was clearly out of control flying into the lane and ran over Rondo...how do you not make that call.  Dwayne Wade gets his jersey brushed and gets a foul, what's Rondo got to do, have someone pull a gun on him?  Oh yeah, and he didn't "throw" the ball at the ref, my 3 yr old could of caught that.

This is why I will never be a fan of the NBA. With the way a foul is called on almost every play and the issues with bad reffing. I dont condone what Rondo did, in fact I am from Boston and dont love the Celtics. If a MLB'er through a baseball at a ump he would be automatically ejected. I just cant stand the NBA and its uselessness...Lets keep Hockey and Football going!

ref made a mistake by not calling a foul on monroe but what rondo did was also unforgivable. throwing a ball to a ref always merits a suspension. he should have let it go but sometimes emotions gets too high...understandable rondo...Tongue out

I'm a Celts fan but this was totally justified. Rondo has a long, proven history of selfishness and immaturity and that bush league ball flip exemplified both. Rondo has been in the league for long enough now that he should know better than to pull that pouty, whiney, elementary school crap, especially in a game against a bad team minus KG while fighting for a playoff spot. His amazing talent and court vision mixed with his inconsistency and immaturiy makes him maddening to watch.
