Report: Lakers hold players only meeting

Things are in a strange place for the Lakers right now. So strange, that general manager had to put out a statement essentially reminding everyone that he's a general manager.

But with rumors starting to circle centering around Pau Gasol, the team is concerned with sticking together amid the possibility that pretty much any player not named Kobe could be dealt.

So according to ESPN.com, the Lakers held a players only meeting after last night's game against the Blazers to talk about it.

It was an odd time for a players-only meeting -- minutes after a blowout victory over Portland -- but the Los Angeles Lakers felt they needed to clear the air. So, according to sources, team leaders Kobe Bryant and Derek Fisher gathered everyone together in the Lakers' locker room Monday night and tried to set the tone for the second half of the season.

Their message was clear: Trade rumors do not matter; your feelings about management or the coaching staff don't matter; all that matters is that the 14 men in that locker room support and believe in one another. If they stay together and stay on the same page, they can get to where they want to go as a team.

According to the report, some players were upset about the rotation and distribution of minutes as well.

Typically, players only meetings happen because the team is playing bad, or dropped a tough game. The Heat famously had one after falling to 9-8 with a loss to Dallas early last season. But the Lakers are playing well enough and had just beaten the Blazers.

But they wanted to get things set straight. They wanted to get on the same page. They wanted to make sure everyone's heads were clear and that they were focused on the task at hand.

It's hard to block out trade rumors, I'm sure. But every player has to do it. Every player knows that any minute, his number could get called. It's part of the business.

Seriously?  Who else in this league has five rings right now?  Aside from Kobe and Fisher?  Kobe's not going anywhere

newest trade rumor, this from ajc.com - Pau Gasol, Steve Blake, and Luke Walton for Joe Johnson, Marvin Williams, and Kirk Hinrich.

PLEASE - let this be true!

I would love the Hawks to free up JJ's and Marvins salary to build around Josh Smith and Al Horford.

It would help the Lakers also, JJ can handle the ball and Hinrich can finally be the defensive stopper @ PG the Lakers have needed for years.

Its a better offer than the rumored Mike Beasley and or Derrick Williams for Gasol from the T'Wolves.

Gasol could play Center for the Hawks, Josh Smith @ PF, McGrady now would start at SF with the back court of Teauge and Willie Greene.  Al Horford comes back for playoffs and Greene would move to the 6th man.

Lakers would have a BIG 3 of Kobe, Joe Johnson and Bynum.

Dream Rumor for ATL and LA

If they get a better effort from Gasol and Whirrled Peas, then a meeting was worth the trouble - whatever it takes

He didn't seem to be too concerned for Gasol then.  When Bryant benefits, trade rumors are just fine.  When Bryant doesn't benefit, managment is out of line.
You don't have a clue what you're talking about.  First of all, the trade that brought Gasol to LA was not rumored for months and months and was not affecting everyone's play.  Secondly, Kobe wasn't Gasol's teammate back then and you don't know that Kobe wasn't counseling the 2 players on the Lakers that were traded.

Kobe isn't saying management is out of line and he isn't saying trades shouldn't happen.  Kobe was saying that all the rumors are affecting Gasol's play and he just wants closure on this.  Either make a trade or don't, but he wants to get back to playing basketball instead of worrying about things they can't control.

There are more people rich enough to own an NBA team than there are talented enough to play in the NBA...

Hey people these are not just rumors!! Paul Gasol WAS already traded this year as was Odom until Dictator Stern stepped in and decided to stick it to the Lakers earlier in the Paul trade whick made Odom so mad he damanded a trade for which the Lakers got nothing in return for him but a ham sandwitch!! That was all maagement not Kobe!! I am in NO WAY defending the feelings of millionaires but at least be honest about it and think how you would feel going to work tomorrow KNOWING your boss wants to get rid of you and in fact had already tried once?
It's called business.  There is no loyalty anywhere.  Star players leave the teams trying to do right by them (Lebron, I know Carmelo was traded, but he wasn't coming back to Denver) so why should franchises be beholden to their players?  It's a two way street.  You go to work and you play hard because you're a professional.  To be honest, if my boss wanted to get rid of me and trade me to another company where I was going to get paid the same to do the same thing, I wouldn't care.  I would, however, attempt to stick it to that owner for giving up on me as an employee every chance I got.  If my employer never got rid of me, then what the hell do I care?  I'm still being paid.  Too many crybabies and bruised egos in the world today.  Everybody needs to take off the Pampers and realize the world doesn't revolve around you.

At this point, I could not care less about anyone's "feelings" in this.  If the players have a gripe at all it is simply that the Laker Management as a collective whole is inept and unable to function.  It would appear that anyone with working knowledge of the business of basketball in the organization was let go and replaced by monkey's or bartenders in some cases.

The man who is supposed to be in charge, Jim Buss, is nowhere to be found.  Maybe if he remains in hiding long enough all the problenms will magically go away!  The most competent leader left, Jeanie Buss, is unable to deal with the change in coaching....what?  Did she not know her boyfriend was retiring?  She is so affected by the change, she has had to take time off...really?  This sounds like a bad soap opera.

It is ashame that a long standing institution like the Lakers is being decimated by a lack of management.....

As for the players meeting, they should treat the season like the boys in Major League; each game is a tryout for another team and a big F U to management.  Really, players should have only a couple of  concerns; who is in the locker room today and can we out work and out wit the our opponent.  They should not worry about who may or may not be in the locker room tomorrow because nobody knows.........why waste energy on something you do not know and have no control over anyway?  Control what you can, yourself.

Really - do you think these players would be making the kind of money they do without the owners. What about player loyalty to a team - dont see much of that anymore. The owners and management staff have every right to do what they think is in the best interest of their own team.
