Boston Celtics point guard Rajon Rondo has been named as an injury replacement for the Eastern Conference All-Star team, according to the Boston Globe and Celtics Radio. The NBA confirmed the selection on Wednesday afternoon.

Rondo will replace Atlanta Hawks guard Joe Johnson, who was diagnosed with tendinitis in his left knee and is sitting out two games this week, in this Sunday's All-Star Game at Amway Center in Orlando.

He will join an Eastern Conference roster that includes starters Derrick Rose, Dwyane Wade, LeBron James, Carmelo Anthony and Dwight Howard, plus reserves Chris Bosh, Roy Hibbert, Paul Pierce, Deron Williams, Luol Deng and Andre Iguodala.

Johnson is the game's first and only injury scratch so far.

Rondo, 26, is averaging 14.8 points, 9.5 assists, 4.9 rebounds and 1.6 steals in 37.0 minutes per game. He's played in just 22 games this season though, which is what led to his snubbing in the first place. This will be Rondo's third consecutive All-Star appearance.

Earlier this week, Rondo was suspended two games for throwing a basketball at an official, which earned him an ejection.

According to the Associated Press, Celtics coach Doc Rivers joked: "When you get named to the All-star, you should take one game of suspension away."

Rajon Rondo named East All-Star replacement

Rondo is a punk. End of story.

His attitude sucks.. The kid withdrew from the 2010 USA Team because he wasnt going to start over D Rose. ... Why the hell would a Hall of Fame coach like Coach K start you over the greatest PG on the planet??.. Turn the ego down.. Not as good as you think.. Lots of guys can sling dimes to the guys who have played in Boston the last 4 or 5 years. Punk. You'd think he would have some pride..ya know, to play for your country and to represent it...Guess not. Selfish disrespectful punk.

Then he gets suspended for throwing a ball at a ref just a lil while ago. Punk.

The punk is known as being a dirty player. Cheap shot artist. Everyone knows it. He's a punk just like big pus*y Garnett. Glad I live in Chicago and have the privelege of watching D Rose, who is in fact the oppposite of a punk, salty ass sore loser dirty scumbag. Rose owns Rondo. Everyone knows it. Coach K knew it too. Even Rondo knows it..And it bothers him, no doubt. Too bad he's stuck in Rose's shadow til the day he retires..never gonna start in the East All Star game, never gonna start for Team USA, never gonna be in the discussion for NBA's best PG. Too bad.Go throw a punk tantrum and whip a ball at a ref..While Garnett tries to pick a fight with some 5'something guard. Punks. And now, losers. sub .500 LOSERS

Reports: Rondo named East All-Star replacement

Josh Smith deserves this - he gets screws every single season for the AS game. I don't even need to explain this one.  Rondo is a good player but Josh Smith is having a breakout season in which he is already off to a great career!

Exactly - replace one Hawk with another....Now the Hawks have nobody in the game.

Stern - you really suck, dude.

By the way, Hawks should offer Joe Johnson, Marvin Williams, and Kirk Hinrich to Lakers for Gasol, Artest, and Steve Blake.

What about Josh Smith? Who cares if it is a F for a G? He has been the best player on the Hawks this season, even better than Joe? The TNT guys said that he got snubbed and now a Hawk goes down, why not replace one Hawk with another?

Kyrie Irving before Rondo?! HA! like that's ever gonna happen... how in the world is Kyrie Irving, a rookie who is having a good year, at best, more deserving than Rondo, who is leading in assists and maybe even steals (not sure), potential to deliver trip-doubles night in night out, and, like Holeburners said, CARRYING the C's?  what because Irving has a decent PER rating?!  This is the all star game.

Yeah I guess I am kidding . I think Irving deserves to be in the All Star game before Rondo. I didnt say Rondo shouldnt be there.

But I do believe that if your going to add players to the All Star game, it should be someone who deserves it. Irving should be there before Rondo.
Are you kidding?  Rondo is CARRYING the C's & is in the top 3 in the L in assists per game.  He is establishing a career high in PPG as well.  While irving has looked good, not as good as fellow rookie Ricky Rubio IMO, he is not even close to All-Star caliber yet.  The Cavs are awful, not by his fault alone, but there is something to be said for a non playoff team not being rep'd in the ASG.
