Boston Celtics point guard Rajon Rondo has been named as an injury replacement for the Eastern Conference All-Star team, according to the Boston Globe and Celtics Radio. The NBA confirmed the selection on Wednesday afternoon.

Rondo will replace Atlanta Hawks guard Joe Johnson, who was diagnosed with tendinitis in his left knee and is sitting out two games this week, in this Sunday's All-Star Game at Amway Center in Orlando.

He will join an Eastern Conference roster that includes starters Derrick Rose, Dwyane Wade, LeBron James, Carmelo Anthony and Dwight Howard, plus reserves Chris Bosh, Roy Hibbert, Paul Pierce, Deron Williams, Luol Deng and Andre Iguodala.

Johnson is the game's first and only injury scratch so far.

Rondo, 26, is averaging 14.8 points, 9.5 assists, 4.9 rebounds and 1.6 steals in 37.0 minutes per game. He's played in just 22 games this season though, which is what led to his snubbing in the first place. This will be Rondo's third consecutive All-Star appearance.

Earlier this week, Rondo was suspended two games for throwing a basketball at an official, which earned him an ejection.

According to the Associated Press, Celtics coach Doc Rivers joked: "When you get named to the All-star, you should take one game of suspension away."

Reports: Rondo named East All-Star replacement

@superlion You didnt read both of my posts. But I do believe that if your going to add players to the All Star game, it should be someone who deserves it. Irving should be there before Rondo. I mention nothing of hating Rondo. Where do you see that? Why dont you READ my posts before you call me a moron. I never understand why people need to name call.

No doubt.  Rondo is a beast and is the face of the Celtics (kinda).  He deserves to be in the all star game.  ah get Darren Collison outta here!  Brandon Jennings is a good one though.

sweetlou19: bit of sour grapes, Rondo as a top PG absolutely deserves the invitation, your obvious hate should include the manner Rondo has recently took over the leadership of a struggling Celtic team, despite many moron posters who continue to degrade him. He will give the Eastern All Stars the necessary spark to bury the Western All Stars. No doubt, Labron, Howard, Rose will benefit by his ability dish off leading to many open shots. He is easily a top 5 PG in the NBA. Congrats Rondo!!!

You guys are ignoring darren collison..If you look at stats they are very good.  he is balling  for a team that has a quality record.  I heard rondo destroyed the tv in the celtics locker room.. .  Brandon jennings should have been the pick.. You really shouldn't reward a player who is physically attacking referees.  bottom line is a crappy team, which the celtics are right now, shouldn't have as many players on the squad as the Bulls.  Thus, Collison and Jennings are more deserving.  And the old age thinking rookies can't be in the all star game is wrong.. Irving has been dominating lately.

I knew once Deron Williams was traded to New Jersey that he would be taking Rondos spot in the the all star game because he always got alot of votes out west, Rondo has been playing great the past month and yes Kyrie Irving has been playing better and probably deserves it more then Rondo but Kyrie Irving is a Rookie and David Stern usually doesnt replace a injured All Star with a Rookie, Yes blake griffin was a all star last year but he was voted in by the fans. Is it just me or has the nba made a joke out of the Dunk Contest this year, i cant even believe who they have selected...... and to make it worse on NBATV on thursday ALL DAY LONG they are showing past Dunk Contest with real stars in it, its almost like a slap in the face to see these old really exciting dunk contest and then have to watch these nobodys in this years dunk contest......... its a once a year competition that takes an hour and is not that taxing on the players bodies and the fans love it and wait all year for this, COME ON NBA you can do way better then this!!!!!!

I am Lakers fan, so the last thing I want to do is defend a Celtic but I am a fan of the game first.  For all of you hating on Rondo being selected...get off the stat line and watch a game or two.  But if you want to talk stats, check out a very Rondo friendly stat: assists!  As in league leading 9.5 per game.  Rondo is definitely deserving of the all-star game.  Kryie Irving will have MANY chances at the all-star game but the reality is that rookies very rarely go

The "All-Star" Rondo shoots 25% from the 3 point line-which is horrible..Next, he shoots 61% from the free throw line -terrible..He is playing for a team that is under .500, but yet with Pierce they have 2 players in the all-star game which doesn't make sense.  He quit(walked out) on the Olympic team right before he was about to be sent home..He has been very intimidating toward the referees this season.  Maybe Rondo is a better pick than Pierce. And the fact he ran away from the Olympic team and is always yelling at the referees maybe shouldn't be held against him..He has improved his outside shooting, but i just think Brandon jennings was more deserving..Irving on  the Cavs having a great year, but he is a rookie..Teague on Atlanta would have been a nice surprising pick-he is the starting pg on a team that is above .500..I just think the Rondo pick is business as usual for the NBA and it would have been nice for jennings to get in-after all Bucks and celtics record is pretty similar. And remember Bogut has been out quite a bit this season.
