Kobe Bryant says he and Jim Buss should meet; Magic Johnson agrees (Getty Images)
By Matt Moore

Just days after Kobe Bryant challenged the Lakers' front office to make a desision regarding Pau Gasol and Ken Berger of CBSports.com filed a scathing and revealing report on the inner dysfunction of the team's front office, Bryant told reporters that he and Jim Buss should meet for a conversation. And he wasn't the only Laker great to suggest the idea.

On a conference call Wednesday, Magic Johnson told reporters that Lakers GM Mitch Kupchak is "not running the team" anymore and that Jim Buss is making all the decisions. Johnson, who is as close to the Lakers organization as anyone, considering he has a statue outside their building, said that the answer was for Bryant and Buss to sit down and have a conversation. From the L.A. Daily News:
"(Bryant) just wants to be informed as a team leader and a future Hall of Famer and a guy who has brought five chapmionships to the Lakers," Johnson said. "He wants more communication, probably like he did when Phil Jackson was here and he worked well with Mitch. I don't think Kobe feels he has that type of relationship with Jim.

"What probably has to happen is they need to sit Kobe down and sit Jim down. Dr. Buss was the master at taking you to lunch or taking you to dinner and going over what he was thinking and what he wanted to do with the team.

"Jerry West was good at that as well. Kobe, Mitch and Jim just have to get on the same page and things will be OK."

After the Lakers shootaround, Bryant told reporters when asked if it was time for he and the younger Buss to sit down and have a conversation, "Um, perhaps." That was all, but that one word speaks volumes. If it was no, he could have said "I don't know" or "I'm just a player" or even "I'd be open to it." But that's not it. It's Bryant trying to push for change in the organization, to right the ship. This team isn't over, it's not done, it's not through trying to win championships and still features three great players and one or two good players. Bryant's not willing to sit by and let this situation get out of control.

Meanwhile, Magic Johnson is sticking up for the franchise player, going with the star trying to make the most of the end of his career instead of the son of his long-time friend and employer Jerry Buss. (Read the excellent "When the Game Was Ours" by Jakcie McMullen for more on Magic and Buss' friendship.) It's incredible that not only is Bryant openly questioning management, but that the greatest player in franchise history has openly said the GM is not in charge and that the managing owner needs to communicate better with his team. This kind of thing simply doesn't happen. And yet here we are.

The Lakers held a players-oly meeting this week to try and focus past all the distractions and it worked in a blowout win over Portland. As of this writing, they lead the Mavericks by 12 in the second quarter Wednesday night. So the players are doing their part to work past the issues. Will the front office?

Strange days for the most successful franchise in the NBA.

Dude,
When you graduate Kindergarten and learn how to type a letter maybe people will take you seriously.LeBron is the best player in the game

Dude,
I just got outa school n will have my masters in less than a year. LOL, ur so smart on a msg board telling ppl u dont know theyre stupid....LOSER. If youre actualy putting in the effort to make sure every word is spelled correctly and all the commas n sht r in ur posts then u literaly must not have a life. Ur pathetic......I type n whatever comes out I hit submit. Lebrons not the best sorry. The only thing that could back thatt is stats, theres literaly nothing else. They might as well take him out in clutch time hes useless, he doesnt even get assists cause theyre scared to give him the ball. Not only are they scared hes scared n doesnt want it. His stats sure are great tho....wow......thats amazing.....If he dont win a title he will still have prolly the best stats of all time overall and still not be a top 5 maybe top 10 player. Thats how important stats are. He gets assists and rebounds and blah blah blah who cares, hes so soft its ridiculous. His poor heart gets bruised so easy......Why dont people like me  wahhhhhh wahhhhh  boo Fn hoo Lebron be a man sissy

Kobe is finally realizing that he is old and he can't carry the team on his back anymore. He should have thought about that before he starting getting those big contracts and maybe they would have better talent around him. He can't afford to take a pay cut now that he is giving half of everything he owns to his soon to be ex. The Lakers will not win another championship as long as Kobe is on the team.

The problem with the Lakers is not Kobe Bryant, it is that he has no one around him. No point guard and the front line is a joke other than Gasol. The Lakers need to get younger and more talented. That is probably why they are trying to trade Gasol and get young talent and draft picks to play with Bynum and Bryant. Gasol is also soft and the Lakers also need to get more physical, especially defensively.

really? Lebrons the best? If anyone was starting a team and had to win this year if you dont take kobe ur an idiot. Lebron has shown he can put up stats but so did Dan Marino but no1 considers him in even the top 5 qbs and he has by far the best stats. If youre starting a team for passed this year Id take Lebron obviously but if its just for this season Id take Kobe and that makes him the best player right now and I dont know how anyone could argue that. Basketball is way different than the other 3 major sports. In basketbal 1 player can make you a contender and no other sport can say that. Lebron is the opp[osite of clutch. When you go out of your way to make sure his shots go down in clutch time or give him the ball like last year to try to get him comfortable doing it thats pathetic and theres no way thats the best player in the NBA. Thats like the Packers running the ball when they need a td at the end of the game because theyre afraid to let Rodgers throw and like I said its magnified way more in the NBA because having just 1 good player can make you a contender. If no one gets hurt and the Heat still dont win THIS YEAR he better hide from the media, that might make him the most soft clutch time guy in the history of sports.

Kobe, Magic say it's time for Buss to meet Bryant

Kobe has 5 rings, Jim Buss has zero. Kobe has attained his status by working his butt off and not putting up with losers, Just as Jordan, Johnson, and Bird did. Those men and others like them are the only reason the NBA brand name is what it is today. The owners and GM's with any intelligence realize this. Perhaps you have a much higher level of respect for the owner's worthless kids who inherited what they have instead of working for it. Actually, most NBA owners' positions have been attained through success in other business ventures, not via basketball smarts. Kobe will get another ring, whether it's with the Lakers or another franchise. Jim Buss will get his rings when his father dies and he inherits them, just like everything else he has.

but as arguably the greatest Laker ever
Man...you Kobe lovers sicken me...seriously...Magic and Kareem were both better than this tool and lets not forget Chamberlain.
He's a big drama queen who cries for fouls.  He can't lead a team which is why he needed a Shaq and needed a Phil Jackson.  All he cares about is scoring which he is admittedly, one of the best of all times at, but as a total package BB-player?.... NYG PLZ!!!  He's riding in the shoes Jordan and David Stern built:  the WWENBA.
