Ben & Jerry's, the ice cream maker known for its catch flavor names, has issued an apology for selling Jeremy Lin-inspired frozen yogurt containing fortune cookies at a Harvard Square location in Boston, the New York Daily News reported.

The limited-edition flavor, "Taste The Lin-sanity," contained crumbled fortune cookies before backlash resulted because of the racial overtones from using fortune cookies as part of the promotion.

"We offer a heartfelt apology if anyone was offended by our handmade Lin-sanity flavor," Ben & Jerry's said in a statement.

The New England manufacturer replaced fortune cookies in its honey-swirl based Lin-inspired flavor with waffle cones.

"We are proud and honored to have Jeremy Lin hail from one of our fine, local universities and we are huge sports fans," Ben & Jerry's said in the news release. "Our intention was to create a flavor to honor Jeremy Lin's accomplishments and his meteoric rise in the NBA, and recognize that he was a local Harvard graduate. "We try [to] demonstrate our commitment as a Boston-based, valued-led business and if we failed in this instance we offer our sincere apologies."

The former Harvard star has caused a league- and nationwide sensation as a result of his meteoric rise to stardom as the Knicks' point guard.

Ben & Jerry's apologizes for Lin fortune cookies

Land of the free my ass. You can't say or do anything nowadays unless it comes with an apology and/or your ass getting fired. The pc police are all over everyone like white on rice.......There is definitely a chink in America's armor.

Ben & Jerry's apologizes for Lin fortune cookies

You have ignorance in bundles.  This is akin to having a Ben and Jerry's Flavor named after Derrick Rose and having watermelon chunks throughout.  THe problem is not PC gone crazy, it is that Asian have been disrespected and stereo-typed by the public and the media with no cause for concern. Reality has finally awaken and ignorance is being exposed.
This doesn
t end with Asians, heck VP Joe Biden even was stereo-typing a customer service person by imitating an Indian accent.  Black people are not the only race to be discrimated against.

Ben & Jerry's apologizes for Lin fortune cookies

Does this mean I can go crazy next time a Chinese restaurant gives me a fortune cookie?  Goodness - liberals whine about anything for the PC debate.  I would think Lin would be happy that his nationality is getting so much attention - especially in the NBA where there is a stigma that Asians can't play the sport very well.  People need to get over themselves - you could have 1 Million people love something and 5 people complain - and it goes away.  It's LINSANE!!!

Ben & Jerry's apologizes for Lin fortune cookies

This is pathetic. How is this offensive? Unless fortune cookies are not part of Taiwanese culture, as Lin is Taiwanese and not Chinese, this is just PC-ness going too far.

Ben & Jerry's apologizes for Lin fortune cookies

Did ESPiN fire Ben and Jerry, too?  Put away the freaking crying towels and violins for goodness sake.  Puns and veiled refereneces for the sake of advertising and promo's are one side of it, the other is that our culture gleefully allows outright lies (misdirection at best) to be broadcast and plastered all over every form of media in the name of marketing and advertising, every day, all day.

And go figure on this one.  The term, "Linsanity" has somehow NOT offend the mentally ill or those who care for them.

Ben & Jerry's apologizes for Lin fortune cookies

What is offensive about this ice cream recipe is the serious lack of imagination. Basically it seems like someone said, "Lin's Asian, so let's just throw together all the stereotypical Asian foods we know." This flavor could just as easily be called "Mao Tse Tung" flavor or "Lieutenant Lee's Ice Cream" and be equally fitting because, due to the lack of creativity, it has no deeper connection to Jeremy Lin than some racial reference. How's about calling up Lin and asking him what his favorite flavors are and then concocting something around that? How's about something connecting to couches or some underdog reference? You know, something...anything...that connects with Jeremy Lin, the individual, and his specific story.

Ben & Jerry's apologizes for Lin fortune cookies

I don't think people posting here seem to understand the problem. Let me try to explain it. The term "Lin-sanity" clearly indicates one person, Jeremy Lin. If you had never seen him, You'd guess he's asian from obvious surname Lin. If he wasn't an asian guy, and still had the last name Lin...this Ben & Jerry's "Taste the Lin-santity" with fortune cookies would have been just offensive. The problem here is stereotypying the last name Lin to asian culture. Now if Ben & Jerry made a flavor called "Taste the asian persuasion" with fortune cookies without any mention of Jeremy Lin...then it wouldn't have come under fire like it has. The problem here is tying Jeremy Lin with anything asian, as it doesn't speak for who he really is.

"Taste the Lin-sanity" should have had tiny orange jawbreakers or M&M that looked like basketballs. It would have been far less offensive and more true to the term Lin-sanity.

Hilarious

I find it perfectly ironic that the high and mighty, politically correct in every way, "look down their nose at you" BEN & JERRY's makes this kind of "politically incorrect" flavor.

AWWWW too bad B&J - you've been pounding your chest for years about how you do eveything so much better than everyone else - no bovine hormones, blah blah blah blah

Pride goes before the fall - blowhards.

I really don't care about it one way or the other - just that the "preachy" B&J takes a fall.
