Could the Mavericks trade Lamar Odom for Steve Nash? (Getty Images)
By Matt Moore

Steve Nash has said a hundred times he doesn't want to be traded, and the Suns say they want to extend him. Lamar Odom isn't even with the Mavericks, as he's away on personal reasons (though Mark Cuban denies that he is considering missing the rest of the season). But there's a rumor being discussed which involves a swap for the two. From the Fort Worth Star-Telegram
The word on the streets is that the Mavs may trade Lamar Odom to Phoenix for Steve Nash. That will get Odom closer to his home in LA.
via Twitter / @DwainPrice: The word on the streets is ....

There are a lot of trade rumors which seem particularly stupid. This one transcends that and goes into its own world. This is the kind of trade rumor you hear on an absinthe binge. It is the "Fear and Loathing at the Trade Deadline" of trade rumors. I'm sure the talk on the street is legit, but there's just no way this trade gets constructed unless it's part of a much larger deal.

First off, if the Suns are finally, after all this time, going to move their franchise player, former-two-time-MVP, all-world point guard and leader, are they going to do so for Odom's remaining salary when he's understandably struggled with personal issues and conditioning after being traded from L.A. which he clearly did not want to leave. There would have to be more involved, but the Mavericks aren't really in a position to add considerably more for Nash. There's Rodrigue Beaubois, and Dominique Jones, and sure, the Mavericks might give Marion back to clear space for a big 2012 free agent, but that's just it. If they're clearing space, they're going to want to clear space for both Deron Williams and Howard.

This could be being talked about, but it's missing a bunch of much bigger components if so.

Really stupid rumor, Nash is 10 times more valuable of a player than Odom to any team. Odom was even more falsely hyped by the Lakers than Bynum.

Pau got traded for his little brother. That's all that needs to be said about the what could and couldn't happen on the NBA trading block. Sure Marc is now a legit All-Star, but when the trade happened people were screaming colusion and under-the-table business.

Aside from it being an odd trade on the surface, what the hell kind of backcourt would Kidd and Nash be? How does that even work? Will Kidd be involved in the trade as well?

This might be the dumbest rumor out there.  Honestly, how does this in ANY way shape or form work for the Suns?  You think their fan base would accept trading their best player for a 6th man to a team over-crowded already with forwards.

This article is just plain stupid.

Why would the suns trade Nash for Odom.  Odom is useless to the Suns.  It will take a 1st round pick and young player for Nash.  Maybe Batum and Portlands 1st round pick that is more realistic.  But Odom, please, forget the idea.

The entire world wants to see Nash out of Phoenix. Most of us would love to see hiim with Dirk again. Just too bad there's not a viable deal to make it happen. The Mavs are going like gangbusters to move Marion and his remaining contract, but it would make zero sense for Phoenix to add multiple 30+ non-superstars when moving Nash. I guess Dallas could move a future pick, but that won't be worth much for another four years or so. Mavs will definitely get Deron Williams next year, and might grab Dwight Howard, too.

Steve Nash for Lamar Odom would be a steal for the Mav's, if the trade included Jason Kidd and a big man from the Suns. I couldn't see both Nash and Kidd co-existing in the same back court. Although the Mavericks would just be getting older, they would be going all in for this season and could clear off more cap space before the 2012 free agency period. But I don't see this trade happening

A guy who has gone from premiere 6th man to no man for one of the best point guards in the NBA. Phoenix would be foolish to even consider this, unless Dallas included someone else.
