Report: Celtics are shopping Rajon Rondo

The Boston Big Four could be on the brink of breaking up. (Alliteration!)

There's been a lot of talk of Danny Ainge making some sort of move with one, two or maybe even all of Boston's four core pieces before the trade deadline. The one with the most trade value would likely be 26-year-old point guard Rajon Rondo and the Celtics are shopping him around, according to ESPN Boston:
The Celtics find Rondo's personality to be too high-maintenance and his clashes with coach Doc Rivers remain an off-court distraction, sources told Broussard, and the front office is now actively pitching him to other teams. With the Celtics realizing they are no longer title contenders, they don't believe his point guard prowess is worth the headaches Rondo brings, sources say. And they do not want to build around him.

In December, the Celtics had discussions with Golden State about a Stephen Curry-for-Rondo deal, and one source says it was Golden State that decided against pulling the trigger. But Curry's recent ankle injuries, which have caused him several problems in his short career, have given the Celtics pause.

The potential trade is still being discussed by Boston's braintrust, but they aren't sure they want to go forward with it. It also isn't clear whether the Warriors would be willing to do it. Other players would have to be thrown in to make it work financially.

There was talk earlier in the season that the Celtics were pursuing a deal for Chris Paul involving Rondo, and another deal that would send Rondo to Indiana. So there's certainly some fire to all this smoke. Ainge is absolutely making phone calls involving his young point guard.

Whether they're just trying to move on, or they want to wash their hands of the headaches Rondo brings, Boston is actively looking to deal. Doesn't mean something is imminent, but it means that March 15 could be an interesting day for the Celtics.

Ainge tried to cover himself for shopping Rondo around earlier in the year saying in January there's a difference in trying to trade a player and trying to acquire one.

"I was not trying to trade Rajon Rondo," Ainge said. "There's a big difference between trying to acquire a player and trying to trade a player."

Potato, potahto.

Rondo is averaging a career-high 14.1 points per game to go along with 9.6 assists and 1.6 steals. It's not his best season in terms of overall production, but he's still an extremely productive All-Star point guard. And someone with a lot of value. If Rondo is indeed dealt, it would signal a change of process for the Celtics. They'd likely be going from a team looking to contend now, to a team looking at transitioning into a new era.

That roster has been built largely on great talent, but also a strong bond in chemistry. The Kendrick Perkins trade tested that, and the Celtics failed. Dealing Rondo would signal that it's a full on shakeup in Beantown.

Boomah, I'm not so sure that poster's statement was all that idiotic (I'm also not so sure why you need to call someone an idiot just because you disagree with them....)

Anyway, the problem with any Rondo trade is that, despite his ability on the court, his stock is pretty low right now because of his attitude. Chances are, if the Celtics trade him, they're going to take a hit and not get back the same kind of talent, especially if they continue to look more and more desperate to get rid of him.

A lot of players have attitude problems, but then you have to consider in Rondo's situation that here's a guy who has been on a winning team, has won a championship and has been with HOF veterans to lead the way and he still doesn't seem to get it or to be happy. On top of that, he plays for a coach who is one of the, if not the, most popular coaches amongst players in the NBA and who was a fantastic PG himself from whom any young PG could learn so much. If I'm a GM or coach of another team, I'm concerned about his attitude, but even more concerned that he can't seem to get along with even Doc Rivers.

Report: Celtics are shopping Rajon Rondo

This is a huge dilemma if you're a Celtic Fan. Rondo basked in the glory of an NBA Championship and proved he can manage the offense. He can definitely run the floor with anyone. Ainge's situation is.......not many guards can run, drive, and lead an offense. On the other hand, not many guards miss 12 foot jump shots, shoot 50% from the stripe, and disappear every 4th game. Send him packing and add to the core or keep him and re-build around him. What I've seen from Moore and JuJuan are a great start to youth. Let the Purdue duo get some time. Bass has been playing with KG numbers, so this team has what it takes. The inconsistency with the existing talent is excruicatingly painful to watch when losing to Detriot and Toronto and a hand ful of others. The chemistry is skewed of which the Celtics have thrived on for decades. Danny boy......Dwight Howard is around the corner and awaits. Time to figure it out since these guys are just getting older.

Are you telling me that with all of that Boston leadership on that team.  No one is willing to take Rondo aside and school him on authority?  Come on man!  Kevin the chest pounder, no effect?  Nobody in the big three is willing to saddle their point guard.  And he thinks he know's more than the coach.  Really?  The Hall of Fame is lined with boston ledgends, nobody can talk to T.O. Moss & Rondo.  There must be some illgeal stuff going on that we aren't aware of at this time.  He must be having family problems at home.  Twisted things there can screw up your ability to perform your job.  If I were Rondo i would drive through the roughest part of town to get to work.  And realize how blessed he is.  If Boston closes the door on him by the deadline.  That's why they call it the deadline.  Wake up lil brother.  Hit me back man i will help you.

AZNUPP77, you must be dreaming to think the Indiana Pacers would even give one of either Paul George (budding superstar), Darren Collision, or David West for that brick mason jump shootin trouble makin Rondo.  Larry's too smart for that, or have you even heard of Larry Legend?  The Pacers are fine and much better than Boston now and in the future.

Lakers would seem to make the most sense, but you know Stern would just block that deal
I have doubt that Stern would block a trade, Stern don't own the Lakers or Celtics

If Rondo get traded there are few teams that could used the help

Report: Celtics are shopping Rajon Rondo

I'm from Louisville KY and the one knock on Rondo going back to his high school days (his high school coach at Louiosville's Eastern High School was current Miami Heat guard Mike Bibby's cousin Doug Bibby) is that he's problematic, stubborn and set in his ways when he convinces himself that he knows better than you (i.e. the coach) He practically begged U of L coach Rick Pitino for a chance to join Louisville coming out of high school but Pitino had heard the rumors about Rondo being a hot head and he opted to go after Sebastian Telfair who as we all know went to the NBA !

Rondo then opted to go to UK and played for then UK coach Tubby Smith and it's no secret that he butted heads with Tubby quite often. Rondo wanted to play up tempo and Tubby wanted to continue the status quo and they never jelled on or off the court. Tubby "suggested" that Rondo enter the NBA draft after his sophomore season and that folks was all she wrote !

Rondo is a problem child and if you want the talent he has, you also get the headaches he brings !

Report: Celtics are shopping Rajon Rondo

Unfortunately, sorry fans, in order to GET something valuable like Rondo, you're going to have to GIVE something valuable. In the case of the Lakers, the Celtics are trying to get younger. Therefore a trade for Gasol would never happen.

No, you cannot have Rondo for any combination of Metta World Peace, Steve Blake, and Jermaine O'Neal.

I'd be interested to hear what Indiana would offer. Paul George, Darren Collison, and David West would be a start.
