Report: Howard has asked Magic to get Steve Nash

Would acquiring Steve Nash make Dwight Howard a happy man in Orlando? (Getty Images)

The Suns may want to re-sign Steve Nash, but that doesn't mean the trade rumors are going to go away. And it also doesn't mean they're not going to answer the phone when someone calls about him.

There's already the rumor of Lamar Odom being talked about for Nash, but here's one with some larger implications: Nash to the Magic. Via HoopsWorld:
The Orlando Magic has made offers for Nash in the past and sources close to the situation say that they’ll attempt to acquire the 16-year veteran in the next two weeks. Dwight Howard has asked the front office to pursue Nash and sources close to Howard believe he won’t exercise his early termination option if the team is able to acquire Nash and re-sign him this summer.
That... would be interesting. And it makes a decent amount of sense. Something a lot of us aren't thinking about is that Howard's not technically a free agent this summer. He just had the option to terminate his contract early and become one. So if the Magic were doing good things or he felt like he wanted to give them more time, he could just stick around and make us all go through this again in 2013.

Bringing in Nash would certainly make him reconsider though. You're talking a Hall of Fame point guard to pair with the best big man in basketball. That's a pretty good combination. The Magic would almost certainly have to take on some money in this deal as the Suns aren't going to let Nash go for nothing. But GM Otis Smith has shown a willingness in the past to mix things up in an effort to win, so I'm sure every single player on the roster would be available, except Howard.

As we near closer to the March 15 deadline, I think you'll see one of two things happen with Orlando. A) They trade Howard or B) they keep him and make an aggressive trade to try and win this year, while also convincing him to stick around later.

Nash has refused to ask for a trade from the Suns, but this deal would be good for him as he tries to compete for a title in the twilight of his career. The Suns aren't going anywhere anytime soon, so pairing Nash with Howard would at least give the Magic a relative shot. Would they be able to beat the Heat or Bulls in a series? It would be tough. But it's not just about this year, but the bigger picture. And if Howard wants Nash and Smith delivers, that could go a long ways to keeping No. 12 in Orlando.

Report: Howard has asked Magic to get Steve Nash

Let's try to keep the conversation on basketball and not spreading more false rumors about kids who already have to grow up hearing this BS.  That was a RUMOR.  It was NOT true.
It's well documented Nash & his wife separated after the 3rd baby, but that baby is NOT black, nor look anything like JRich.  If you see the pics, he looks like Nash.  And his sisters.
Not a difficult fact check these days.

Picking up Nash makes sense in the fact that no player is hungrier to win an NBA title than Nash.  Nash though has always been a team player who does his best with the cards he is dealt unlike Lebron who has to stack the cards.  Phoenix is going nowhere, they do not have talent around Nash and the talent they do have Nash makes so much better.  Unfortunately for the Suns they can waver in the player contention for a few years than take a dive or unload Nash now for a #1 and possibly more.

There is no way the Suns are going to let Nash go to the Magic. It doesn't make since. First off, he and Jason Richardson don't get along. There is the rumor that JRich slept with his ex-wife. Second, the Suns aren't going to trade him for crap, and that is what Orlando would give, unless there is a 3rd team. Not a good move for Phx.

Are you a boob? Nash refuses to ask for a trade, but said he would agree to one if the Suns wanted to pull the trigger and start rebuilding. Work on your reading comprehension skills.

If the magic organization is so dysfunctional that their players have to tell them who to get maybe its time for a management overhaul. Otherwise build the team to be the best disregarding what the players say. Dwight Howard surely knows more about basketball than me or you, but he surely doesnt know as much as a gm.

I like what your saying. In this era the superstars have grabbed the power base for themselves and use it to hold their teams hostage, esp in contract years. (making a generalization...definitely not saying all superstars are this way). Do this or I walk...Do that or I walk. Players jobs are to play hard every night and work to make themselves better through film study and practice. Yes in many cases they are the "face" of the franchise, but that "title" doesn't include management decisi
ons. Consultants maybe, but full decision authority...No. If Dwight wants to put up his own money to bring these players in I'm sure the Magic would be happy to comply. Until then, maybe he should spend a little more time working on his 121st ranked (lowest for all NBA qualifiers) free throw % of .494. He has had 2 games alone in the last 10 days in which he was 2-10 from the line. Unacceptable for an NBA player.

Dwight is pulling the strings. The Magic are the puppets. Dwight's mind floats from thought to thought and Orlando tries to deliver. It is pretty pathetic. In the end Dwight will be gone and Orlando will be stuck with Big Baby and any other whim Dwight mentions.

Here is a thought. Trade Dwight for Gasol/ Bynum or a similar package with the Nets (Lopez)- get some good talent in return THEN sign Steve Nash. You could get two more good years out of Nash and by league standards for an elite PG, he will come at a reasonable price due to his age.
