Boise State wanted $1 million to play Nebraska?

It's pretty well-known that Boise State has historically struggled to fill its schedule with enough legitimate teams to beef the season's strength of schedule to the point of respectability. Sure, there's Oregon last year, Virginia Tech last weekend, but by and large, it's slim pickings. But if the report from the Omaha World-Herald today is true, it sure sounds like Boise's not really putting in a good-faith effort:

Nebraska called. Nebraska tried.

In the past year, NU tried to put together a series with BSU; two-for-one, home-and-home, one-way trip to Lincoln. Whatever. It ended up fizzling out. Why?

Because, according to NU Assistant Athletic Director Jeff Jamrog, Boise wanted a minimum $1 million to play in Lincoln.

This, of course, is insanity. Nebraska has zero incentive to agree to a deal like that; while the athletic program would still make money off of the game even after handing over seven figures to their esteemed guests, they'd make a lot more by hosting any number of other programs instead. Moreover, for BCS teams, non-conference strength of schedule doesn't really matter. Or, if you demand more nuance, SOS does matter, but not nearly to the extent that it would offset the negative effect of taking a loss should Nebraska lose that game (easily possible).

But if that's the way Boise wants to play it, by all means, let them. Just keep stories like these in mind the next time a BSU fan complains about the consequences of the cupcake schedule they face every year.

Boise State wanted $1 million to play Nebraska?

Exactly.  Here is the question that needs to be asked: did Oregon have to cough up $1 million?  Did Virginia Tech?  Show us the proof, Nebraska.

Boise State wanted $1 million to play Nebraska?

It's home & home, right? So Nebraska would have gone to Boise the next year. No need for details then. BSU needs to stop crying then.

Boise State wanted $1 million to play Nebraska?

News for you from the Big Ten:  Why don't you try taking up cricket?  You know nothing about football.

Boise State wanted $1 million to play Nebraska?

Boise State deserves to charge a fee.. Boise State has been the talk of college football ALL off season. What will they do against VA Tech?? Will they win?? If they win, then what?? The game was put in Primetime, on Monday night, and got MONSTER ratings.. Whoever Nebraska played Saturday, would not have gotten those ratings on Monday night.. I liking this article to boxing.. Sure Nebraska is the better team, (maybe), they have the history, but Boise State would be the "draw".. BY FAR, Boise State is the talk of college football. Them and Reggie Bush.. Think about it.. If Oscar De La Hoya wanted to fight an undefeated, but not elite boxer, who would have more leverage?? The young boxer could say "I'm undefeated, I'm fatser, I'm better, now." Then Oscar De La Hoya could say, "Who cares?? No one wants to see you fight. If you fight me, its Pay Per View, stars come out, its the lead on Sportscenter, and we both make a triple the money." YES, De La Hoya would have the right to command what he wants in this scenerio.. De La Hoya made more for fighting Floyd Mayweather Jr, the best boxer in the world..

Now, this isn't a boxing post. But the situations are similiar.. Outside of that region, Nebraska has lost his luster in recent years. Boise State, TODAY, whether is deserved or not, is the draw of college football. Boise State is interesting to all in involved.. The big schools have to respect them, ask Oklahoma in the bowl game. And the small schools pull for them.. IF Boise State could go on a tour and play all the ranked teams in the Top 10, week by week, THAT would be the story of college football.. BY FAR.. Everyone would want to be in front of their T.V., to see who beats Boise State.. No one cares who beats Nebraska because Nebraska is not expected to go undefeated or contend for a National title.. So, I think Boise is right for trying to cash in on their very high appeal in college football now.. Nebraska should have taken the money, and been happy they was on Primetime T. V. for the 1st time in years, out of conference... Its obvious, that Bosie State is doing just fine without Nebraska..

Boise State wanted $1 million to play Nebraska?

I believe there is probably some "truth" to what the local Cornhuskers paper is reporting. However, I am sure the negotiations involved less money if it wasnt  a 2 for 1 type deal. No AD is going to accept a 2 for 1 and not look for some additional incentive (i.e. 1 miliion dollars). I would take the report with a grain of salt since the truth probably lies somewhere in between BSU and Cornhusker Hebrie's version of the story.

Boise State wanted $1 million to play Nebraska?

I think the issue is more a "If you want to play both games in Lincoln then we will require $1 Million.  If you want to play one of the games in Boise then we don't want any money."

Boise has proven themselves.  To refuse to play on their field is treating them like a 1AA team.  The truth is, bigger schools are afraid to play on the blue turf.

Boise State wanted $1 million to play Nebraska?

No one is factoring in the TV ratings and $$ issue that comes along with playing Boise right now. The VT game was one of the highest rated college football games of all time (6.8). No other game last weekend could crack a 3.0 rating. Just more smoke blowing. Surprising that this came out a week after all the press Boise just got.

You know how Nebraska could stay relevant on the national scene? Instead of putting out statements like this, just win their games. They win, they'll be in the BCS champ game over Boise. Just win and leave this petty crap for the offseason when there's not much to talk about.

Boise State wanted $1 million to play Nebraska?

I found an Article that Idaho is getting $800,000 for playing Nebraska this year.   If that is really the going rate, and it should be becase I do not think Idaho brings anything extra to the table,    1,000,000 (20% premium) for Boise is not so outragous.

I kind of doubt that Nebraska needs to sell extra seats that Boise St could sell but I realy doubt that the deal did not get done for an extra $200,000 if they really wanted to play each other.

Boise State wanted $1 million to play Nebraska?

I hear Notre Dame would like to renew the Nebraska / ND rivalry...  another Big Ten school would fit well into NDs schedule and they can ditch Tulsa...  Bring on the Irish Nebraska...
