Boise State wanted $1 million to play Nebraska?

It's pretty well-known that Boise State has historically struggled to fill its schedule with enough legitimate teams to beef the season's strength of schedule to the point of respectability. Sure, there's Oregon last year, Virginia Tech last weekend, but by and large, it's slim pickings. But if the report from the Omaha World-Herald today is true, it sure sounds like Boise's not really putting in a good-faith effort:

Nebraska called. Nebraska tried.

In the past year, NU tried to put together a series with BSU; two-for-one, home-and-home, one-way trip to Lincoln. Whatever. It ended up fizzling out. Why?

Because, according to NU Assistant Athletic Director Jeff Jamrog, Boise wanted a minimum $1 million to play in Lincoln.

This, of course, is insanity. Nebraska has zero incentive to agree to a deal like that; while the athletic program would still make money off of the game even after handing over seven figures to their esteemed guests, they'd make a lot more by hosting any number of other programs instead. Moreover, for BCS teams, non-conference strength of schedule doesn't really matter. Or, if you demand more nuance, SOS does matter, but not nearly to the extent that it would offset the negative effect of taking a loss should Nebraska lose that game (easily possible).

But if that's the way Boise wants to play it, by all means, let them. Just keep stories like these in mind the next time a BSU fan complains about the consequences of the cupcake schedule they face every year.

Boise State wanted $1 million to play Nebraska?

How many "cute, gimmicky" plays did Boise run against VaTech last weekend? Did you count them? Zero. Get a clue and go bury your head in the sand for another season. At least that way none of us will have to listen to your garbage.

Boise State wanted $1 million to play Nebraska?

I go to Central Michigan and a couple years ago, we were paid almost $600,000 to go down to Georgia and take a whoopin'. So it's not like this is an absurd amount of money. If a MAC school can get 600K for going to an SEC school, a Big 12 school ponying up a million for a quality opponent doesn't seem out of the question.

Boise State wanted $1 million to play Nebraska?

My immediate question is, if they had offered a traditional home-and-home, would Boise still have wanted the million? Why should Boise have to accept a 2 for 1 deal from anyone at this point? I know they're not in a BCS conference, but no matter how much you want to downplay them, they've shown at minimum that they're a legit top 10 team. Would anyone expect OSU or Texas, or hey, Nebraska to accept a 2 for 1 deal?

I don't blaim Nebraska for offering it, that's they're business. But don't get all high & mighty when its rebuffed, or its met w/ a counter-offer that involves a hefty chunk of change.

Boise State wanted $1 million to play Nebraska?

Colorado $1.4M (Ohio State)
Navy $1.4M (Ohio State)
Arkansas State $1.0 (Auburn)
San Jose State $1.0 (Alabama)
Northern Illinois $1.0 (Wisconsin) twice!
Look at those teams you just listed.....you think your better than everyone else yet are comparing yourselves to.....Colorado

Whats up now?

Also, when Osborne refers to THE schedule, I believe he's refering to the two good non-conference games and then the Conference schedule......which BS does not have.

Boise State wanted $1 million to play Nebraska?

The bottome line is this.   Nebraska doesn't need to play teams like Boise. Boise needs to play teams like Nebraska.  Would Boise win? I would say at this point they would have a great chance of winning the game, but that isn't the point.  Nebraska's conference schedule is undoubtedly stronger than Boise's and losing out of conference is basically an automatic trip to a non bcs game.  It is what it is, Nebraska loses a lot more than 1 million if you take that into consideration.  Also, Nebraska will sell out the Idaho game anyway making tickets sales a moot point, and also sell the game on PPV.

Also, all of this touting Boise St.'s record against BCS opponents is overrated. Generally speaking they are bowl games.  Take into consideration that their opponent is less than motivated as they most likely feel like they should be playing in the NC game, while Boise (to their credit) plays every game like it is the NC game.

I could go on, but you get the point

The going rate thing days starts at $800K no matter who you are.

When was the last time you saw any of those schools you mentioned do a one-and-done away from home? thought not.

You are grossly uninformed

Boise State wanted $1 million to play Nebraska?

Boise State is a cute, fun, glorified 1-AA team from Idaho that plays in a gimmick conference with high school talent, with a gimmick blue turf stadium that seasts under 50K, that likes to run gimmick plays in the 1 or 2 credible games they play a year.

Fun, cute, gimmick team.... nothing more.
