Boise State wanted $1 million to play Nebraska?

It's pretty well-known that Boise State has historically struggled to fill its schedule with enough legitimate teams to beef the season's strength of schedule to the point of respectability. Sure, there's Oregon last year, Virginia Tech last weekend, but by and large, it's slim pickings. But if the report from the Omaha World-Herald today is true, it sure sounds like Boise's not really putting in a good-faith effort:

Nebraska called. Nebraska tried.

In the past year, NU tried to put together a series with BSU; two-for-one, home-and-home, one-way trip to Lincoln. Whatever. It ended up fizzling out. Why?

Because, according to NU Assistant Athletic Director Jeff Jamrog, Boise wanted a minimum $1 million to play in Lincoln.

This, of course, is insanity. Nebraska has zero incentive to agree to a deal like that; while the athletic program would still make money off of the game even after handing over seven figures to their esteemed guests, they'd make a lot more by hosting any number of other programs instead. Moreover, for BCS teams, non-conference strength of schedule doesn't really matter. Or, if you demand more nuance, SOS does matter, but not nearly to the extent that it would offset the negative effect of taking a loss should Nebraska lose that game (easily possible).

But if that's the way Boise wants to play it, by all means, let them. Just keep stories like these in mind the next time a BSU fan complains about the consequences of the cupcake schedule they face every year.

Boise State wanted $1 million to play Nebraska?

For those of you not smart enough to figure it out.  A fee is not paid like that when reciprocating a home game.  All the little schools get that kind of money because they do not get a return game from the big boys. So why would Nebraska pay that kind of money when Boise was getting big boy treatment from the Cornhuskers?  They were willing to go into Boise. Nebraska doesn't do that for the western kentucky's of the world.  Boise St. is ducking the big boys.  And they didn't play @ Va tech, they played in DC.

Boise State wanted $1 million to play Nebraska?

So the article is factually incorrect...tell me where I go to find the BS denial of this wild accusation by the 'ol hicksville newspaper...maybe it's in the daily literary masterpiece printed in Seattle!  What is that anyway..the Times-Picayune?  Maybe it's the Gotham Globe!

Surely such a cosmopolitan metropolis as Seattle has their crack reporters working on this case don't they?

Maybe everyone is just too busy stealing Texas A&M's tag line of "12th man" for their completely irrelevant football team...that's more like it.

Boise State wanted $1 million to play Nebraska?

Fortunately, after BS completes their fraud schedule they'll have to face a real team for their "championship"...

Be sure you get all your smoke and mirrors, hook and laterals, statue of liberty plays and other one shot gimmicks ready to go!  That way you can all say "SEE????, we CAN beat the big boys!...just like we "beat" Oklahoma!"

What a disgrace to college football...this team was outplayed in all facets of the game against the 10TH RANKED TEAM IN THE COUNTRY....and had to make a last minute come from behind drive to squeak out a win.   After the 10TH RANKED TEAM IN THE COUNTRY had a punt blocked and fumbled a QB snap for 2 tap in scores...

Boise State is a joke...all this is is 1984 BYU all over again....

Sad for college football

Because the Omaha World-Herald says so....

But if the report from the Omaha World-Herald today is true...Anyone outside the state of Nebraska ever heard of this newspaper? Anyone ever heard of stirring up stuff just because? DON'T JUMP TO CONCLUSIONS just because the Omaha World-Herald said something.

Boise State wanted $1 million to play Nebraska?

So where do I go to read Boise State's denial of this horrible allegation?

This is clearly a hit job on their program right?  So why on earth wouldn't they sieze the opportunity to dispel this despicable attack???

Boise State wanted $1 million to play Nebraska?

NU did not screw up.  BSU did.  BSU showed they are all talk.  They need to earn being a top team and they haven't done it yet.  FSU did it back in the 70s and 80s.  No tradition up until then so they earned being respected by being willing to play anybody anywhere.  BSU is we'll demand exhorbitant amounts of money and if we don't get it we'll cry wolf.  I can't believe I used to root for them to pull off upsets.  By the way this was in the news at least as early as January and BSU has never denied the story out of Lincoln.

Boise State wanted $1 million to play Nebraska?

Just a completely stupid post on so many levels...

I guess I would start with how many TV's are actually TURNED ON and TUNED IN to the Huskers each week compared to New Jersey State...that number alone is all the justification needed to add NU instead of ghetto state.

But if that's not enough for your simple little mind, perhaps you should consider the number of TV's not affiliated with either program that would tune in to watch Nebraska compared to Decaying Infrastructure University.

Or...perhaps you might consider the value of the advertising rights that can be sold each week for a game between Ohio State and Nebraska compared to Ohio State vs Small Time College?

Yeah... HUGE mistake the Big 10 made by selecting a school from a "Fly Over State" instead of the terrific draw of a "Bombed Out Dump State"

What a complete moron...

Boise State wanted $1 million to play Nebraska?

The big point you missed here is that Boise is not asking for any money if they do a home and home.  They only want what they consider to be fair market (1Mil) if they don't get the return trip to Boise.

In the 2 for 1 senerio, they would play one game at Nebraska for no payout and they Nebraska would have to pay 1 million for the second game where no return trip would be guaranteed.

Does that make sense to you?

Boise State wanted $1 million to play Nebraska?

TexanBob7, I agree with you... BSU can shop for what they think they are worth. Afterall, they are signing a deal that gives Nebraska 2 home games for 1 return trip to the blue field... Nebraska doesn't want to play BSU in a season where they are ranked high early on and have only OU and UT to worry about for the most part... To many people are hating on BSU, all they do is win when they play a big game so if you want to shut them up, do it on the field I say!

Boise State wanted $1 million to play Nebraska?

Dude, nothing wrong with this. Most schools demand way more then this. Also, 1 m isn't that much. Look how much Nebraska would make off of a game like this. Way more then they'd make playing some crappy school. It would've been a win win situation for both teams, but Nebraska screwed up. They are now trying to blame Boist(when they'd prolly give Idaho St. the same amount of money to play them.) Look who is ranked higher as well. Huh, why is Nebraska dissing the higher ranked Boise St? I think this article is trying to make Boise St. look like a bunch of Sons of guns, when reality it's the other way around. Nebraska thinks they're hot stuff and is trying to bully on the Non AQ school. During the past few years who has won more BCS bowl games? Who has been ranked higher in the end of the year polls? This is absurd to blame Boise for asking for a million while no names ask for nearly as much.

BTW I am a die hard Boist St. fan. The report is true(I read it on ESPN a while ago, and ESPN used the same logic as I did above. Look it up in the archives if you don't belive me.) Long live Boise State. WE WILL WIN THE CHAMPIONSHIP THIS YEAR!
