Boise State wanted $1 million to play Nebraska?

It's pretty well-known that Boise State has historically struggled to fill its schedule with enough legitimate teams to beef the season's strength of schedule to the point of respectability. Sure, there's Oregon last year, Virginia Tech last weekend, but by and large, it's slim pickings. But if the report from the Omaha World-Herald today is true, it sure sounds like Boise's not really putting in a good-faith effort:

Nebraska called. Nebraska tried.

In the past year, NU tried to put together a series with BSU; two-for-one, home-and-home, one-way trip to Lincoln. Whatever. It ended up fizzling out. Why?

Because, according to NU Assistant Athletic Director Jeff Jamrog, Boise wanted a minimum $1 million to play in Lincoln.

This, of course, is insanity. Nebraska has zero incentive to agree to a deal like that; while the athletic program would still make money off of the game even after handing over seven figures to their esteemed guests, they'd make a lot more by hosting any number of other programs instead. Moreover, for BCS teams, non-conference strength of schedule doesn't really matter. Or, if you demand more nuance, SOS does matter, but not nearly to the extent that it would offset the negative effect of taking a loss should Nebraska lose that game (easily possible).

But if that's the way Boise wants to play it, by all means, let them. Just keep stories like these in mind the next time a BSU fan complains about the consequences of the cupcake schedule they face every year.

Boise State wanted $1 million to play Nebraska?

Unbiasedone- Apparently you are not familliar with Nebraska Football? Your argument about selling this game out faster than any other game is way off target. Everyone knows that we Nebraska Fans are rabid when it comes to our football! The fact is that a game against Western Kentucky sells out just as fast as a game against Texas. Also to note that we have sold out 306 consecutive home games and don't see that streak ending anytime soon regardless of who we play.

Way to do research...

on an article written a half year ago by Bleacher Report.  Read an real article about how much big schools pay, and then realize that Nebraska really has no intention of playing Boise as they have nothing to gain and a ton to lose.  They are throwing this out their to discredit Boise who is only asking what most big schools are already paying visiting teams.  I have no dog in this fight, but this argument is absurd.

Public Relations Machine Put in Play

As a PR practitioner, if someone came to me wanting to diminish the accomplishments of an up-and-coming team, and put doubt in the mind of pollsters about their legitimacy, this is exactly the type of story I would locate and push in the media.  The timing is suspect and they come right out and say how they want pollsters to view BSU in the last line, "Just keep stories like these in mind the next time a BSU fan complains about the consequences of the cupcake schedule they face every year."

This is a hit job, pure and simple, and I have to wonder about CBS Sports' alliance with the SEC and BCS in general.  Very suspect.

Boise State wanted $1 million to play Nebraska?

I agree.  It is an odd move for a team trying prove themselves worthy of being mentioned along with perennial powers Alabama, Texas, Florida, etc.  By demanding such a payout, there are acting the exact same as the creampuffs they are trying to separate themselves from.  For a team who continually says "don't like us, then schedule us" in order to gain legitimacy, this seems to undercut what they are trying to do.  They are acting like a lower level team by looking for a payout when, if they want to be viewed as an elite team, they should be willing to play anywhere for no money, or at least for a far smaller sum.  As a nebraska fan, I was excited to hear about my team trying to schedule them a year ago, and was disappointed when it didn't happen.

Boise State wanted $1 million to play Nebraska?

Not a bad thought and certainly understandable, but let me ask you this.  Where else would a story like this come from?  Boise wouldn't publish anything on it, and what information or incentive to write such a story would any other state have?  That it comes from Nebraska and a proven writer from a real news outlet with connections to the athletic department in the same state is what gives it credibility.

Boise State wanted $1 million to play Nebraska?

I see a lot of people complaining about Boise St and their schedule but I don't see ANYBODY lining up to play a series with them with a return game in Boise. Stop complaining and schedule them to a home and home series.

Boise State wanted $1 million to play Nebraska?

VT and Auburn are each paying Arkansas State a million for a single game. I would assume Nebraska is in at least, if not much better financial shape than either of those programs. The amount isn't out of the norm, it's simply being blown out of perspective because it's Boise.....

Boise State wanted $1 million to play Nebraska?

Whats that smell comming from Lincon Neb.?  Maybe its the lies being told and the devil takin care of business.

More simple minded Texans.  If only I could live in a world of ignorance!  Texas you're a joke!  To consistantly have one of the top two or three recruiting classes every year and only have one NC to show for it...in my lifetime!  Even if I were old enough 1970 would not count.
