Boise State wanted $1 million to play Nebraska?

It's pretty well-known that Boise State has historically struggled to fill its schedule with enough legitimate teams to beef the season's strength of schedule to the point of respectability. Sure, there's Oregon last year, Virginia Tech last weekend, but by and large, it's slim pickings. But if the report from the Omaha World-Herald today is true, it sure sounds like Boise's not really putting in a good-faith effort:

Nebraska called. Nebraska tried.

In the past year, NU tried to put together a series with BSU; two-for-one, home-and-home, one-way trip to Lincoln. Whatever. It ended up fizzling out. Why?

Because, according to NU Assistant Athletic Director Jeff Jamrog, Boise wanted a minimum $1 million to play in Lincoln.

This, of course, is insanity. Nebraska has zero incentive to agree to a deal like that; while the athletic program would still make money off of the game even after handing over seven figures to their esteemed guests, they'd make a lot more by hosting any number of other programs instead. Moreover, for BCS teams, non-conference strength of schedule doesn't really matter. Or, if you demand more nuance, SOS does matter, but not nearly to the extent that it would offset the negative effect of taking a loss should Nebraska lose that game (easily possible).

But if that's the way Boise wants to play it, by all means, let them. Just keep stories like these in mind the next time a BSU fan complains about the consequences of the cupcake schedule they face every year.

Boise State wanted $1 million to play Nebraska?

are u all retarded? BSU wants a home and away with nebraska but also wanted 1 million to play at nebraska with no additional compensation to nebraska. The only reason nebraska pays idaho 800k is because it is a 1 game shot in lincoln. If nebraska played a home and away with miami there would be no extra cash given to miami for their trip to lincoln or to nebraska for their trip to miami.
You are all "VERY" smart!

Boise State wanted $1 million to play Nebraska?

You must be a BIG TEN( lol )Cry fan to think Nebraska could lose to any of those candy- ass teams. Ohio St. call themselves Championship quality teams , but then smacked around by real teams (SEC teams ) when they play a good team . Hell, if they were in the SEC , they lose at least half of their games. Terrell(Cryer ) Pryor is no Heisman Canidate either just like Troy Smith should've never gotten it ! The voters had to be drunk when they voted for him.Tongue out

Boise State wanted $1 million to play Nebraska?

Normally, I'd say that this is just small-time news outlet wearing pom-poms for the local heros but he's got a named source.  Follow up with this AAD.  Why would he open himself up to criticism by allowing his name to be attached to this if he were making this up?  Remember, Boise's got their own small market propaganda machine working there, they feed off the national attention of being the non-BCS underdog.  Go Hogs!

Boise State wanted $1 million to play Nebraska?

You people never cease to amaze me.  You like to deride BSU for asking for $1M but don't consider anything else...like the fact that Nebraska wanted to play the first 2 games in Nebraska before going to BSU.  One small catch to that...there was a small buy-out for Nebraska.  So...do you honestly think BSU would be dumb enough to take that offer?  Hell no.

Oh...and let's not forget...the Idaho Vandals play at Nebraska this weekend.  Their payout?  $800K.  As in $200K less than what BSU was asking.  And let me tell you, outside of a game vs BSU, Idaho fans don't travel well, if at all.  And that's for a one-and-done deal.  And I seem to remember several body-bag teams getting around $1M last year.  I believe Utah State was one of those.  Hell, next year LSU is paying Idaho $950K to play there.  Let's also not forget about Oregon vs. LSU next year.  Oregon gets something around $3.25M I believe.  And yes...I know...Oregon has more fans that'll travel.  Then there's Colorado.  They're receiving, I believe, $1.25M to go to Ohio State.

As it is, there's been no official word out of BSU that the talks failed like Nebraska seems to be trying to make it sound like.  The talks have stalled...all on the set-up for that 2-1 deal.  Hell, BSU's even said that they'd take one in Nebraska, one at BSU and one at a neutral site.  Guess what...Nebraska said nope.

You guys like to say, what's in it for (pick your schoo) to play BSU?  It's a lose-lose deal.  If we lose, our season, and chance at the NCG, is done.  (To which I say, BS)  BSU has more riding on these games than any one of your precious BCS teams.  If BSU loses the game, there's no chance whatsoever to make the BCS bowls, whereas your BCS teams could lose to BSU and still make it in, in some cases over BSU.  So I say simply, BSU has far more to worry about than any of the BCS teams, period.

Seriously...if you want to shut Boise up, pay up.  We're not asking anything more than what other non-AQ teams, and some AQ teams for that matter, are asking.  If it were something like $4M, then you'd have a good case.

What's funny is the fact that y'all act like this was some big secret or something.  FYI...it's been out for quite some time what BSU's been asking for OOC games.Undecided

Boise State wanted $1 million to play Nebraska?

Oregon did a 1 for 1 so they didn't have to cough up $$$$, each team kept their home earnings.

VT game was payed for by Fed EX Stadium owners just like Jerry is doing in Dallas. These games generally pay more. I live in Boise and red they were paid 1.25 Million for that game...VT was paid more but I never heard final #'s

Boise State wanted $1 million to play Nebraska?

Scrollie,

The payouts are set by how much teams are willing to pay, period. when it comes to payouts, BSU just wants what the market will bare.

Let's make something clear once again. The Nebraska AD is on record stating that they would not schedule BSU in 2011 because their schedule was already tough. IT HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH MONEY.

You AD is on record specifically discussing the reason for not sceduling BSU in 2011 as well as offing the 2-1 starting in 2015
