Ryan Mallett named Davey O'Brien Player of Week

The Davey O'Brien Foundation named their quarterback of the week today; it's Arkansas QB Ryan Mallett, and deservedly so:

Junior Ryan Mallett has been named the Davey O'Brien Quarterback of the Week after leading his team to a dramatic 31-24 road victory over the Georgia Bulldogs.

After getting off to an early start, Mallett found himself under pressure late in the fourth quarter when the Bulldogs rallied from a 24-10 deficit to tie the game with 3:55 left to play. He remained calm and collected, marching his team down the field with a three-play, 73-yard scoring drive that ended with a 40-yard touchdown pass to Greg Childs with 15 seconds remaining. The signal caller from Texarkana, Texas finished the game with 380 yards and three touchdowns on 21 completions.

"This is a really surreal feeling," Mallett said after the game. "This is something I've never experienced before. This has got to be one of the greatest moments I've felt since I've played the game of football. It so rarely comes down to the wire like this. It's sometimes gone the other way for us, but now I know how it feels to get the win."

Mallett beats out 11 other notable peformers, such as Nevada's Colin Kaepernick, Arizona's Nick Foles, and Michigan's Denard Robinson.

Mallett's selection is merited simply because of the game-winning drive, which essentially came out of nowhere. The writeup above doesn't do Mallett's performance justice; Arkansas and Georgia traded punts after the Bulldogs tied the game, so Mallett's game-winning drive didn't start until there was about a minute left on the clock. Most teams, given the ball at their own 27 with 47 seconds left and a tie game, would simply kneel and take the game to overtime. Not Arkansas, and not Mallett, and they've got a win to show for it.

It should be noted, of course, that Mallett wasn't the only quarterback that led a game-winning drive in such a scenario; Foles drove his Wildcats for the win with under four minutes to play after the Iowa Hawkeyes scored 20 straight points to tie their score at 27-27. The difference, of course, is that Iowa tied the game when defensive lineman Broderick Binns picked off a Foles pass and took it 20 yards for a touchdown. Giving up a game-tying 20-yard fat guy touchdown is an automatic disqualifier for O'Brien POTW status. Sorry, but it's science.

CrimsnTide wasn't really saying he'd be a Hogs fan is you beat the likes of SC, Bama, and LSU. He's merely saying you're average as usual, and he'll believe you're a pretender not a contender until you get Real wins. UGA isn't good. Bama will roll this week, like last year. The  winner of Bama - LSU wins the West. You Hogs are quite delusional. Defense wins championships.

Think someone from arkansas stole this guys wife or something lol.  No one cares what you or anyone else thinks.  If you believe arkansas is going to get blown out thats fine, but you better be here if that doesnt happen, and ill be here if it does.  If you think LSU has any chance at winning the west with a peewee offense your the one whos delusional.  LSU is not even in the discussion from anyone.  I would predict auburn before the tigers.  Fact is i think this game will have a better impact on deciding the west than the bama LSU game.

"When they start beating Alabama, LSU, SC and Auburn ... Ill jump on board... "

SEC West Division champs in 1995, 1998, 2002, and 2006.

They do have a mountain to climb.  From 2000-2009 the Razorbacks went 4-6 against Alabama, 4-6 against LSU, 5-5 against Auburn, and 6-4 against South Carolina.  But past struggles don't preclude them from winning more games in the future.

When they start beating Alabama, LSU, SC and Auburn ... Ill jump on board. Otrherwise they are just beating the middle fo the pack ... and they almost lost to Georgia. This week would be a BIG start for him.

FYI, The Arkansas vs. Alabama series is tied at 10-10. We also have a 11-7 record againts S.C. and a very close Auburn series record of 8-11-1.

We should of beat LSU. Well, if never did anything; kind of like your football program. Let's see:
Championships in past 10 years:
Florida - 2LSU - 2Bama - 1Arkansas - ZERO
Arkansas produces generally average football players. That fact doesn't allow them to recruit the way the above mentioned teams recruit. It's called talent, and Arkansas can't match up to any of the above teams. One QB won't lead you anywhere. You need players around him, especially on the defensive side of the ball.
You're delusional.

Mighty words from a team without a defense....I think I would rather my old high school's defense on my team...and don't forget that defense wins championships. You will find that out this week...

I shouldnt say easy wins cause this is the SEC after all, but they are games I feel confident we can win.

We destroyed auburn last year, and beat SC, and should of beat LSU if not for our kicker missing a chip shot field goal, so i dont know what your talking about.  Those teams except for bama (whom arkansas can beat but we'll see) are easy wins for Arkansas this year.  Try again.
