Wisconsin needed a blocked extra point from cornerback Jay Valai to escape with a 20-19 win over Arizona State on Saturday.  The Badgers were unable to close out the Sun Devils in the fourth quarter, allowing the Sun Devils to drive 77 yards in 9 plays to score the potential game-tying touchdown with just over four minutes remaining.

There will likely need to be more defensive players like Valai stepping up when called on, especially with the news that sophomore linebacker Chris Borland sidelined for the rest of the season because of recurring problems with his surgically repaired shoulder.  Wisconsin head coach Brett Beliema addressed the situation in a prepared statement on Tuesday.

“After talking with our training staff and with Chris, we decided that the best thing for Chris was to shut him down for the rest of the year,” Bielema said. “Obviously Chris is a tremendous player and a ferocious competitor but after looking at all the options, everyone agreed this was the only option for him.”
Borland, the 2009 Big Ten Freshman of the Year, is still eligible for medical redshirt for the 2010 season, having played in only two of Wisconsin's games.  He will be sorely missed in the Wisconsin defense as the Badgers are trying to piece together a run at their first conference title since 1999.  The biggest obstacles in that run, Ohio State and Iowa, await the Badgers in back-to-back games October 16 and October 23.
