Florida quarterback John Brantley's health has been a hot topic of speculation in Gainesville, particularly following the 33-29 loss to LSU under the lights in Ben Hill Griffin Stadium on Saturday night.  Brantley struggled at times to move the offense down the field, particularly in the first half.  LSU's defense kept pressure on Brantley all night, holding him to 154 yards and forcing an interception.  Brantley downplayed the effects of an injured throwing thumb and banged up ribs on his play after the game.

"There was never any doubt that I was going to play," Brantley told reporters after the game. "I knew since Monday or Sunday I was. They're [ribs] just a little banged up. Nothing too serious. Nothing you can't play through."

A report from ESPN.com's Joe Schad tells a different story.  While head coach Urban Meyer and Brantley described the ribs as "damaged" and "banged up," the injury is actually hairline fractures in four ribs, according to Schad's source.  Brantley reportedly wore a protective vest during the game, and complications from the injury kept him from throwing in practice on Thursday and Friday.  Additionally, the thumb which Brantley described as a "minor thing," is actually reported to be fractured.

Regardless of the extent of Brantley's injuries, the Gators need to get healthy soon.  It's the first time in six seasons the Gators have had back-to-back losses, and with South Carolina's victory over Alabama, the battle for the SEC East just became very interesting.  The Gators will gladly welcome a change of pace with Mississippi State and an off week before their annual matchup with Georgia in Jacksonville.

Report: Brantley played with cracked ribs

lets be clear here. the headline says cracked BUT in the story it says hair line fracture. i play lacrosse which is a highly physical sport, maybe not as much as football but still there, hairline fractures i nthe ribs are painful but not as bad as youd think and you can play with them, especially with the qb protective pads they normally wear and they said he had extra padding. he will be sore for a few days but should be able to play again as logn as they dont get worse and turn into a full fracture, not just hairline

Report: Brantley played with cracked ribs

Not to mention LSU ran the exact same fake successfully against UF in 2007.  As bad as the offense is, this was the worst call of the night.  Overall, LSU played a better game and deserved to win, but UF had it and blew it.

Actually, xcrew46, it was South Carolina that we ran that fake against.  In 2007, LSU was five for five on fourth downs againt the Gators, but no fake FG's.

Poor coaching.  We never adjusted.  Also, everybody in the stadium knew that LSU was running a fake.  Why wouldn't the coaches say, "hey guys, if this kid can kick a 53 yarder at night in the swamp with 90,000+ screaming at him, so be it.  We'll go beat them in overtime."

Report: Brantley played with cracked ribs

I would love to see the official injury report!  I played 4 years of college football and 10 years of Rugby and I can guarantee that Brantley did not play that game with "4 cracked ribs" and if anyone on these boards believes that a qb can take the shots that he took and throw an even semi accurate ball with 4 cracked ribs..........then you have never participated in any contact sports in your life and don't deserve an opinion.

Report: Brantley played with cracked ribs

Yeah, put Burton in.  There's nothing like benching a future first round draft choice for a guy who can't throw.
Well, Burton hasnt proven if he can throw or not, BUT Brantley isnt a first round draft choice, BUT i think he will be an NFL draft steal and hopefully either him or Mitch Mustain become future Redskins starters when McNabb retires.
The Gators have big problems and it isn't Brantley.
the problem is the center has bad snaps, the running game isnt great and Brantley doesnt fit the spread offense. he's best on a team like USC or a team who runs a pro style offense.
My opinion is to put Burton in and let's take our lumps this year.  He's a more natural fit to this offense.
i see him taking the job eventually, but i think (if he starts) its' not about how bad Brantley is, as much as it's saying that Brantley doesnt fit this offense, Brantley isnt a running passer, he's a pocket passer.

Report: Brantley played with cracked ribs

I think the bottom line is the offensive line.  Addazio was a good offensive line coach and he is a terrible offensive coordinator.  You do have some personnel issues, but that offensive line was supposed to be good and they are horrible.  LSU blitzed all night and we had one play, a true screen to Burton over the middle, to try to nuetralize this.  Poor coaching.  We never adjusted.  Also, everybody in the stadium knew that LSU was running a fake.  Why wouldn't the coaches say, "hey guys, if this kid can kick a 53 yarder at night in the swamp with 90,000+ screaming at him, so be it.  We'll go beat them in overtime."  Piss poor coaching.  I love Coach Meyer and our staff, but Addazio cannot get the job done.  We've had superior personnel the last few years and made the spread look good.  The SEC caught up to Spurrier's offense and they are catching up to the spread.  Coaches are recruiting big defensive backs, bulking them up and playing them at linebackers where they can run like a deer and nuetralizing it.  Coach U, time to adapt to your personnel, because John Brantley is not a spread QB.  You need to be creative, because you haven't been all year.  I'm not jumping off the bandwagon because I show up every week to the stadium and cheer for them.  Go gators and we're probably in for another dog fight against Mississippi State.

Yeah, put Burton in.  There's nothing like benching a future first round draft choice for a guy who can't throw.    The Gators have big problems and it isn't Brantley.   No wide receivers of any real worth.  Running backs that aren't good enough to run off tackle.  And an offensive line that can block.  Oh yeah and an offensive scheme that is based on a guy that isn't there anymore.

Report: Brantley played with cracked ribs

Brantley has not enjoyed the success that had been anticpiated for him.  However, that can hardly be said to be his fault.  True, he is more of a pro set rather than spread offense type qb.  But if the center had made better snaps, if the OL had given him more protection, if coach Meyers had been smart enough to put in a solid blocking FB to protect him, Brantley would have had considerably more success.

A smart coach is one who makes adjustments which can accomodate the best skills of his athletes.  So far, Meyers has failed to see that he can readily make simple adjustments that could accomodate the skills of his players. A few changes ghere and there and the Gators would be able to have more offensive success.

Report: Brantley played with cracked ribs

Great post LSUSMC, its like fitting a round peg in a square hole! Now whose fault is it? Urban and his staff get so much credit for their recruiting and I love Brantley but he obviously doesnt fit their offensive scheme. Burton is more there style QB..problem is he cant throw! Urb and staff knew this all along so why would they want a QB like him? Gonna change him? Thats like changing Timothy into a prostyle QB! That being said Im glad he is our QB for this year and next! Go Gators
ps...can Urban please have Addazio turn in his OC playbook and have him worry about his OL. This unit was supposed to be one of the best in the country and they are getting bitchslapped every week!

Report: Brantley played with cracked ribs

Brantley simply has no business at Florida.  He is a pro style QB and it is clear that this coaching staff is not going to change their style to play to his strengths.  He cannot adapt to the spread, and the coaches cannot adapt to the pro style, so this is a bad marriage.  UF has serious issues at the QB position.  Sounds strange coming from an LSU guy as we have our own issues, but we knew what we had all along.  UF surely thought they would get better QB play at this point.
