The parents of Declan Sullivan, the Notre Dame video assistant who died while filming a practice this week, released their first statement since the tragedy that took their son's life.

This week our family lost Declan Drumm Sullivan in a tragic accident on the University of Notre Dame campus in South Bend, IN. Declan loved Notre Dame. He felt privileged to have a role with the football program videotaping games and practices. The grief we feel is tempered by the knowledge that Dec was doing what he loved in the place he most wanted to be.

We are grateful for the consideration shown to us by the Notre Dame administration and everyone associated with the University. The love for Declan from the Notre Dame community evident at the Mass of Remembrance has helped us cope with our grief. It is our hope those grieving with us find the support they need to get through this difficult time. We are drawing support from family and friends. The family appreciates your respect for our privacy as we come to terms with our loss.

Declan's life was cut short after just twenty years, but he leaves this world a better place for having been here. We hope that all that knew him join us in celebrating our son's life and remembering the joy he brought to so many.

-- Alison & Barry Sullivan

I can't even begin to imagine what the Sullivan family is going through during these times, and we here at the College Football Blog extend our thoughts and sympathies to them.

Declan Sullivan's family releases statement

What I find amazing is that a moment like this someone has the gall to make a statement like, "I dont think its possible for most catholics to get into heaven [...]"  Reassuring words of comfort for the family during times like this.  Way to stay classy.

I suggest you let God judge and instead spend your time familiarizing yourself with the Catholic faith before choosing to criticize and condemn.  Your words are clearly spoken out of ignorance and hatred, so I pray that God will someday bring you to greater tolerance, understanding, and faith.

Thoughts and prayers go out to Declan Sullivan's family and friends in this difficult time.

Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him.  May his soul, and all souls of the faithfully departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace.  Amen.

Declan Sullivan's family releases statement

This incident shows what kind of trash the new head coach at Notre Dame is.  Brian Kelly is a worthless sack of excrement and should be charged with manslaughter then fired.  Its a shame how Notre Dame places football above honor.  Especially seeing how this is SUPPOSEDLY a christian university.  BULL!

Brian Kelly lied to his players at Cincinnatti and Notre Dame knew it but didnt care as long as they got what they wanted.  Now because of his ego a student is killed and nobody is pointing fingers at Kelly when it was his decision to practice outdoors in 60+ mph winds AND have it taped.  He is the reason this young man was killed and he should be held accountable.  The only reason he will lose his job is when Notre Dame loses a ton of games and cant play in BCS bowl games.  Life means nothing to this man or this school its all about wins and losses.

I dont think its possible for most catholics to get into heaven (according to the bible because the basic fundamentals to get to heaven they ignore and sin against) so I dont have to worry about seeing Brian Kelly in heaven but I hope Brian Kelly realizes Karma is real and what goes around comes around.
