Michigan wins 3OT epic; RichRod safe?

At one point, it looked like Michigan had it in the bag, up 38-31 with the ball and driving deep into Illinois territory. Then it looked like they had no chance, down 45-38 with time for only one drive and Tate Forcier in for the injured Denard Robinson , out with either a head r hand injury (again).

But Forcier converted that drive into a critical last-minute touchdown, and Michigan survived three overtimes to win today's nominee for Big Ten game of the year 67-65 when Nathan Scheelhaase couldn't get a two-point conversion passoff. The game featured all kinds of superlatives and records, but maybe the most impressive is that Michigan receiver Roy Roundtree is now the school's single-game record holder for receiving yardage, having hauled in 9 catches for 246 yards. Even considering the addition of three extra frames, the amount of offense is staggering: 676 total yards for the Wolverines, 561 for the Illini. And the game provided some nice redemption for Forcier, the one-time golden boy who lost his job to Robinson in the offseason and began his outing today by setting up an Illini score with an unforced fumble.

But the biggest winner of all is Rich Rodriguez , who has his team bowl-eligible for the first time in his three seasons and could even push to seven wins with a victory over injury-riddled Purdue . As powerful as the Michigan offense looks, it seems unlikely the usually-stolid Michigan administration will rfire him after a bowl season over simply asking him to make defensive staffing changes. RichRod had never been in more trouble after last week's defensive meltdown against Penn State , but he might never have been safer than he is after this week's victory.

That's crazy, but it's also week-to-week business as usual in the college football business.

Michigan wins 3OT epic; RichRod safe?

Rich Rod has definitely brought the worst out of Michigan for the past 3 seasons. I know 6 wins is disappointing for Michigan, but look at the years before. For the first time RichRod has managed to get his team bowl eligible. Yes I think that RichRod is safe, because, despite big losses this year, he is showing improvements in the winning department. That defense certainly needs to change if they are going to look like the Michigan of old. I mean I remember the defense that featured Heisman winner Charles Woodson (first defender to win the award), and now Michigan has gone through a very big change. RichRod got mixed reactions from fans when he first came. I remember he was the third choice in Michigan's search for a new coach. They decided to pull a publicity stunt by asking Les Miles, who at the time was going for (and later won) the national championship. Needless to say he turned them down. Then Michigan started looking at the Big East. The second choice was Greg Schiano of Rutgers. From the looks of things he might've been just as bad off as ole Rich Rod.Now I am curious, as to what would've happen if Ron English was given the reigns for the Wolverines. I mean rumor had it he was next in line, but Michigan decided to look outside. I know he's having a nightmare over at Eastern Michigan, his current all time record with the team is 1-20. Which is why I'm hesitant to say, "they should have gone with..." RichRod would only convince fans and critics he truly belongs to Michigan if, in the unlikely event, he can defeat Ohio State. But with Michigan's lousy defense that seems unlikely. Although I will admit it might bring a decent game when U-M's offense plays OSU's defense (hence might). I personally think RichRod should finish the season with Tate Forcier, Denard Robinson hasn't been the same since the loss to MSU. But I will say, RichRod has only one feat to accomplish to having better seasons (besides improving the defense). That being, to have his team not go to pieces after suffering their first loss.

...bob, one of these mornings, you're gonna be out in the barn, either milking your cow, taking it's temp, or maybe even making out with it, and you're gonna wish that your parents were well enough enough to have you go to U-M. It's Ok though,,you've got a nice family, and a job that has your name on your shirt. The world  needs general labourers as well. MSU has a good season, and now you're an expert on hiring coaches. the Hale Bop Comet comes around more often than MSU and a winning season in the same sntence. Enjoy the run, and don't forget that letter to Santa, cause' apparently..he's also REAL this year. Public University, like public TV..when's the next fundraiser!!!??? LOL..

..agreed...the "something" that needs to be done with the defense, is that they will ALL be a year older..check it out..alot of freshman & jr's in that starting 11.......in the next 2 years though, the offense of U-M, is gonna make some defenses look just as pathetic.

what pathetic commentary. goes to show you're a state fan, but more likely an alumnus. in spite of state having a good team, you can't even talk about your opponents without presenting yourself like a total loser.  stay classy, green and white, and have fun at your riot.

Hey Go Blo 7676,

Have a great time at the Little Ceasers Bowl or Insight Bowl for years to come. NO recruit worth a dam want to play for the Urine and bLEW any more and "waste time" as the laughing stock of the of the "once" feared big blo.

While you wait for things to come everyone else is moving up and on.

Three years of this crap and you still believe he can turn it around, that´s blind faith --- stupid and masochistic, but faith.

BTW the only reason State didn´t score more points against the Illini ...didn´t need to ...our defense held them to 6 points. (Oh you make me laugh)

What was his major violation... too much practice time? If this is his biggest fault to the program I am willing to forgive this... the guy has an unbelievable amount of pressure on him to win (with a bunch of players he was handed that did not know or understand his system). Naturally, the only way to get them to understand it was to put in time learning it inside and out. The players he had trying to run it already didn't have the physical capability, so not understanding it makes it even worse.

I am sure he was just trying to speed up the learning process, was tough on some players, maybe went a little to far and those players decided to cry about it.

Other than this I feel he has ran a pretty clean program, how many players have you heard about getting into trouble. If they do get into trouble they are not around very long.

I would be more upset have Dantonio as my head football coach. This guy has let not 1 but 2 players get out of prison and go straight to the practice field without so much as a game suspension (one of which was after he stated a "ZERO TOLERENCE" policy for his program). When 20 of his players broke into a party and assaulted other students, only two were kicked off the team (those two... had season ending injuries and were not going to help the team anyway). This guy only disciplines those who cannot help him win. I think this display is far worse that anything RichRod has done at UofM.

Can we just settle down and think about his for a few minutes. RichRod's first year he had a bunch of players that did not at all fit his type of offensive system. The second year he had some players that were able to run it but they were all young. Now finally in year three this offense is dangerous. DO NOT fire RichRod... now if you want to fire the D Coordinator (Robinson) and the Special Teams coach I might be able to go along with that. Although, the D is very very young and not really stocked with talent (a lot of this has to do with injuries, transfers, players dismissed from the team).

If RichRod goes it is starting over from square one and suffering through another year or two of transitioning to some other system which all these players RichRod has recruited are not familiar with or may not suit them.

I would like to see another year or two... with possibly a switch of the D Coordinator and Special Teams coach. If this D becomes halfway decent we are looking at team very much like Oregon is right now. Don't give up on RichRod yet...

It's pretty disappointing that there's even a possibility that RichWad may not be fired.  He should have been canned after getting M football placed on probation for the first time ever.  Lloyd Carr was on the hot seat after a couple of seven win seasons, back when there were only eleven games on the schedule.  How is a six or seven win season, in which the "quality" wins are against a so-so Illinois and a bad ND team, enough to save him?  The process that led to his hiring was a fiasco, and he has done precious little to improve the situation since coming on board.  I'm embarrassed to be an alumnus of an institution with this guy as its most prominent public face.
