Michigan wins 3OT epic; RichRod safe?

At one point, it looked like Michigan had it in the bag, up 38-31 with the ball and driving deep into Illinois territory. Then it looked like they had no chance, down 45-38 with time for only one drive and Tate Forcier in for the injured Denard Robinson , out with either a head r hand injury (again).

But Forcier converted that drive into a critical last-minute touchdown, and Michigan survived three overtimes to win today's nominee for Big Ten game of the year 67-65 when Nathan Scheelhaase couldn't get a two-point conversion passoff. The game featured all kinds of superlatives and records, but maybe the most impressive is that Michigan receiver Roy Roundtree is now the school's single-game record holder for receiving yardage, having hauled in 9 catches for 246 yards. Even considering the addition of three extra frames, the amount of offense is staggering: 676 total yards for the Wolverines, 561 for the Illini. And the game provided some nice redemption for Forcier, the one-time golden boy who lost his job to Robinson in the offseason and began his outing today by setting up an Illini score with an unforced fumble.

But the biggest winner of all is Rich Rodriguez , who has his team bowl-eligible for the first time in his three seasons and could even push to seven wins with a victory over injury-riddled Purdue . As powerful as the Michigan offense looks, it seems unlikely the usually-stolid Michigan administration will rfire him after a bowl season over simply asking him to make defensive staffing changes. RichRod had never been in more trouble after last week's defensive meltdown against Penn State , but he might never have been safer than he is after this week's victory.

That's crazy, but it's also week-to-week business as usual in the college football business.

I may agree with, I believe it was Griese, about RichRod's job. He's not safe, but, he may get the chance to keep his job, if he passes blame to his coaching staff, and makes changes. And if he doesn't recruit a good kicker, don't even let him come back. That's embarrasing. You can't even attempt a 40 yard field goal, because there's a 95% chance you'll miss. Maybe, I'm just being skeptical, but is one year of experience for 9 freshman on defense really going to make that much of a difference going into next year? You'd expect to see some improvement as the season has been moving along, None of those kids seem to be learning, or improving. That 2 week stretch against Wisconsin and Ohio State just scares me. Being a big Wolverines' fan for many years, I never thought that I'd ever have that kind of feeling.

And "bowl-eligible" shouldn't mean $hit. Over half of their wins came against lesser competition. He's not guaranteed a winning season yet. Just a .500 record.

Michigan wins 3OT epic; RichRod safe?

College football games are won by upperclassmen...who recruited this class of seniors? The same guy who won an NC with Moellers players, and who, with his best recruiting class lost to APP State and Oregon and couldnt beat Tressel.

If they were to replace RR with anyone wouldnt it be someone who runs a similar offense?  Jim Harbaugh is over-rated...2/3 losing seasons, a bowl birth in his 3rd which the lost.  It really wouldnt make a whole lot of sense. Being that we have one of the best offenses in the country i dont think there is even a chance RR will go. Greg Robinson however will not be back. Look for the Wolverines to spend big bucks on a very very good DC in the offseason.  We have 17 starters returning for the next 2 seasons...there is no reason to change head coaches whatsoever.

Behind the scenes, they will put out feelers. If Jim Harbaugh commits they will make a move. If he won't come home, then starting all over again will be pointless. Does anyone else remember the rumored hire of Greg Schianno. I admit to becoming impatient with the progress made, but i request that all the haters reply with legit replacement possibilities (and no Brian Kelly isn't leaving ND after 1 year). We may be on the verge of something spectacular or something that just isn't going to work. I would like the chance to find out either way.

If you are thinking Peterson, include reasons why he would come. It's an interesting proposition.

Keep drinking the RR kool aid boys, really Mallet home sick, now that's funny! Oh and just what has RR won, how NC titles? Thought so and who recruited his kickers, thought so, oh who hire Greg Robinson, thought so. I was embarrassed watching ESPN this morning, all the flag football referances, yea RR what a coach!

Jesus, what a sad bunch of ill-informed commenters on here.

1)  Yes, the cupboard was bare.  Mallett would have been gone even if Lloyd stayed.  He was homesick and had major attitude problems.  With Mallett gone, Manningham and Arrington would have been gone anyway as well.  Look at the O-line that was left for 2008 - it had to be rebuilt from the ground up.  With Mallett gone there were no legitimate QBs on the roster.  The RBs were decent, but always injured.  The defense in 2007 gave up a ton of points in a number of games (34, 39, 37, 35), and there was zero depth on the defensive roster.  Yeah, the cupboard was bare.

2)  The NCAA violations?  Way overblown.  The NCAA's own report indicated that the violations were nowhere as bad as was alleged, were technical in nature, and did not seriously harm any student athletes.  The Free Press went on a jihad against Michigan because they didn't like RR, and all they found were "violations" of regulations that nobody really understands or follows.  This was not intentional misbehavior by Michigan as much as mismanagement by the compliance department.

3)  A Michigan "fan" who is upset that we don't have all of our guys in the pros?  Seriously?  As a fan, I would be most concerned about my team winning games, and I think RR will win a lot going forward.  Also, none of RR's guys have been around long enough to be drafted.  The guys not being drafted right now are Lloyd's guys.  Also keep in mind that Graham did not blow up until after RR arrived.  Molk, Lewan and Omameh could end up drafted someday.  Stonum has potential.  The tight ends have potential.  No, Denard is not a prototypical NFL QB, but someone might draft him to play a Percy Harvin kind of role.  Mike Martin will be drafted.  The defense is still to young to evaluate most players.

4)  Of course a Sparty had to chime in.  Yeah, our defense is bad - that is what happens when you have lots of injuries and play a ton of freshmen on D.  We also scored 19 more points on offense against Illinois in regulation than MSU did (41 points more overall).  Maybe MSU should have been more worried about showing up for the Iowa game than basking in their win over a young Michigan team (good work on playing Rucker fresh out of jail though).  All you guys had to do was beat one decent team and you would have had a chance to play for the NC, but instead you choked.  Next year Michigan returns nearly everybody, and MSU loses a ton of starters.  Enjoy it while you can.

Not true at all.  Lloyd did not leave the cubbards bare at all.  The hiring of Rodriguez made them bare quickly.  Note that when Carr retired Mallett was the QB, Manningham had another year at WR, and Boren anchored the OL...hardly bare on O.

But upon the hiring of Rod Manningham said time to go pro, Mallett did not fit that offense and decided to transfer out and Boren simply said Rich Rod is more of a Dick Rod so let me stick it to him harder and head to that other school.

Do not blame the lack of talent on Lloyd, just is not the case.  Further, RichRod could not bring his prized recruit (Pryor) with him like he promised and everyone expected.  Still wondering why that is to this day.  Would love opinions on that one.

Vegas you hit it right. People do not realize Carr left Rich no team at all. The studs all left the same year. Plus the first year here Rich had little time to recruit players. So we are really looking at his 2nd year not 3rd. With so many freshman starting on defense this team will be very good in coming years.
