UPDATE - Tuesday 8:30 a.m. - John Henderson of the Denver Post has confirmed with several sources that Dan Hawkins will meet with the team Tuesday morning, then there will be a noon news conference to formally make the announcement.  Associate head coach Brian Cabral is expected to be promoted to interim head coach for the final three games.  However, most of the staff (likely Cabral included) is not expected to return for the 2011 season.

From the category of "pre-written headlines" comes Monday evening's reports from Colorado.  After five seasons as the head coach of the Buffs, Dan Hawkins is out at the University of Colorado.  Vic Lombardi of CBS4-Denver reported that Hawkins is expected to meet with the team Tuesday morning, and at that time we will learn whether Hawkins will finish the season, or leave immediately.  If the position becomes vacant immediately, it is expected that assistant coach Brian Cabrel will take over the head coaching duties.

Hawkins was on the hot seat coming into the season, and Saturday evening's meltdown against Kansas had to have been the straw that broke the camel's back.  Colorado blew a 45-17 fourth quarter lead to a Jayhawks squad that has not scored more than 28 points in a game all season.  Despite the outspoken sentiments of the team after the game, Colorado is obviously focused on acting this week.

Keep it here on the College Football Blog, as we will update as the inevitable begins to unfold.

Report: Hawkins out at Colorado

After the shame of Saturdays meltdown, now a ray of hope.  This man did not deserve to finish this season out.  Brian Cabral is a good man and a true Colorado Buffalo.  At least now we have some hope to maybe make an improbable run to a bowl game...or just beat Nebraska before the rivalry ends.  Hawkins-You have been stealing money ffrom the University for the last 5 seasons.  You are a complete fraud!!!!

Msg to Bohn: HIRE MIKE LEACH. I know they won't, but they should... especially going to the Pac 12. At least CU has finally stopped the bleeding.

Report: Hawkins out at Colorado

This firing was written on the wall. Now they need to get a coach who will be able to recruit, which should be much easier now that they joined the Pac 10. Completely fresh start for the Buffs, let's see if they can improve this disaster of a program. They may as well get a new AD while they are at it.

The Puffs simply got the wrong guy from Boise State - it was the assistant coach that knew how to recruit - not the politician head coach who knew how to work the gullable - best of luck Boise State

YA THINK????   This guy would have been gone after last season except for the fact that Colorado couldn't afford to buy him out of the last year of his contract.

Hawkins sealed his fate by starting his son (who couldn't play dead in a cowboy movie) at quarterback for the better part of three seasons.

By the time Cody was finally benched during the Texas game last year, the damage to the program had reached the point that it couldn't be repaired.

Although the Buffs obviously had plenty of other problems, it is really difficult for a school in a BCS conference to be successful if it has to overcome horrible quarterback play for a prolonged period of time.

Mike Leach would be a perfect fit for this job, especially when you consider that Colorado will be moving to the Pac 10 next year.

The Buffs would be smart to make an offer to Leach within the next couple of weeks before another BCS school snaps him up.

Being a DIE HARD Husker fan, this makes me laugh histarically Colorado is horrible, and they also need to fire his son! Maybe Cody Green will transfer and help them out because Cody Green also sucks!

Great post. If all Boise fans are this thoughtful and appreciative, the program will remain a favorite of mine.

Report: Hawkins out at Colorado

I remember how so many of us were saddened when Dan Hawkins left Boise State for Colorado.  However, Hawkins left Boise with an excellent coaching staff and guaranteed that Chris Peterson would be a tremendous coach. We appreciate him for what he did in Boise in building the program and leaving us in good hands.  Hawkins' legacy at Boise State is a good one and it is sad to see his bad fortune at Colorado.  He needs to be in another situation and will likely experience success again as he did prior to going to Colorado.  It was simply a bad fit.
