More Mississippi State sources have come forward with information against Auburn quarterback Cam Newton, telling ESPN today that the Newton family admitted to receiving money from Auburn recruiters in phone conversations last year:

Prior to Newton's commitment to Auburn, one of the recruiters said Cecil Newton told him it would take "more than a scholarship" to bring his son to Mississippi State, a request the source said the school would not meet. Cecil Newton also referred the recruiter to a third person that would provide more specifics, the source said.

After Newton committed to Auburn, another source said an emotional Cam Newton phoned another recruiter to express regret about his change of commitment from Mississippi State, stating that his father Cecil had chosen Auburn for him because "the money was too much."

Obviously, the NCAA is going to want to hear more about this, and the days of Auburn being able to proudly claim that its football program is not a target of any NCAA investigation are probably close to an end.

It's worth pointing out, though, that this report in and of itself doesn't constitute enough to jeopardize Newton's eligibility today; it's simple hearsay more than anything else. Furthermore, since this new allegation is that the Newtons accepted money (and not that Auburn merely offered it), the NCAA is going to have to actually find some of this money (which sounds easy enough, considering the Newtons were asking for $200,000, but you never know what a, um, "creative" accountant can accomplish) before it doles out any punishment.

When reached for comment, Cecil Newton had little to tell Fox Sports.

"I’m not going to confirm nor deny nothing that has been taking place," Newton told Thayer Evans of Fox Sports. "I’ve answered what I need to answer. If they’re out there, go with it and make the decision or determination based on whatever you’ve got to say."

Mississippi State head coach Dan Mullen may have denied the earlier reports that he was behind the allegations of academic misconduct by Newton, but considering MSU's heavy involvement with these two other reports, it's easy to wonder whether there's any point in Mullen keeping any distance from this scandal anymore. This is clearly the Bulldogs' fight right now, so they might as well be honest about it.

Moreover, if the academic allegations did come from Mullen (which would make sense, considering his position at Florida while Newton was there), then this is three-for-three on Cam Newton allegations that have come from Mississippi State ... and haven't been proven yet. That's not to say they can't or won't be proven true -- time will tell on that front -- but these reports aren't coming from the NCAA, they're just Mississippi State airing dirty laundry. Remember how true the academic allegations sounded when the report first hit? Those don't seem quite as credible now that has its own sources saying Newton was never involved in the Florida Student Conduct Committee for any reason. It would be wise to at least keep that track record in mind going forward until more definitive evidence arises.

I specifically recall a previous Cam Newton incident at Florida, let me refresh the readers memories. Cam was in possession of a stolen computer.Said computer had been repainted Black with Cam Newton printed in White across the top.Hmm suspicious ? Cam upon realizing GAME OVER when confronted tossed the computer out the window ! Needless to say Cam apparently isnt to bright. Now considering Cam is a proven thief what pray tell would lead a person to think Cam isnt a liar ??

UP FRONT?  You've got to be kidding.  Evidently two coaches (revealed as recruiters and Mullen says only coaches are recruiters) are talking to reporters in violation of NCAA rules regarding ongoing investigations.  Could one of those be Les Koenning, the MSU QB coach who has coached under Dennis Franchione at Bama?  The Blinn  Jr. College coach is Franchione's son.  Koenning is a known agressive recruiter who has a history of recruiting junior college kids.  There's also articles from years past where he was linked to recruiting investigations at other colleges and he never stays in one place very long.  Hmmmmm?????

Well I guess this should take some of the spotlight off of Bush, sounds somewhat similar.  Only this guy also supossedly cheated on some test too.  So if this plays out, (just like USC) nothing will be done now except talk, he'll go on and win the Heisman, Auburn will play for and win the title, he'll be drafted NO 1, in three years play for and win the Super Bowl, this will all come out he's guilty, gies back the award, Auburn is punished for life he is another disgraced multimillionaire sports "hero".  Sounds all to familiar.  The fater sent in a statement this morning saying he will neither deny or say yes to these new alligations.  If he definitely didn't do it, why didn't he "jumping up and down" deny it all?  Sounds guilty to me.

Who really cares if this kid's parents asked for $$ or more than a scholarship.  It has been happening for over 40 years and will continue to happen.  Media just leave the kid alone.  Where were you when all the others received $$ and other things from boosters and agents and such!  This has nothing to do with how the kid is playing, how the team is playing.  Sour pusses from U of Florida and Mississippi State.   It's unfair- Life isn't fair.  The NCAA isn't fair.  The referee's aren't fair.  Media just go away.

Ramblin: It isn't just the cost of tuition and books that play into the athletic scholarships.  Those scholarships also include the coaching, weight training, training table, academic support (tutors, etc) that prepares these players for the next level of life, whether it's as a pro athlete (in about 1% of the cases, or a "real" job (99%)!  If you add all of that up, it's worth a lot more than 100K a year.  In fact, it's virtually priceless.  Without it, many, many of these young men would be low-to-mid-level wage earners, like most other people in the world.  The idea of turning them into actual paid pros totally sucks.  It would be better to follow the Ivy league model and eliminate scholarships and recruiting from the equation entirely.  Limit coaching staffs to about 3 or 4 individuals, no position coaches, strenght coaches, spring football, etc.  While you're at it, eliminate TV coverage.  Then you'd have actual amateur teams competing with whoever showed up on campus and came out for the team.  The pros would have to pay for their own development leagues, like baseball.  Don't hold your breath on these suggestion, of course!

I'll bet there aren't many Iowa State people surprised about this, considering the way Chizik treated (mistreated) the Cyclones in the final weeks and months of his emply there!   Ames could hardly be more THRILLED to have Paul Rhoads!

Probably need to check your facts.
Bottom line, the media's not killing the kid... you leave a trail, and it's easily traced...? More like his papa is putting him down, or has sold him up the river. Regardless, it won't affect his earning power at the next level, where they love good business sense.
He'll be fine. He'll continue to play. If they lose this weekend, they'll blame the investigation, etc.

they get a share, it's called a free education.  how do you think all these top of the line facilities get paid for?  the money has to come from somewhere.  colleges don't have owners like professional teams to dish out the cash.  these are 18, 19, 20 year old kids.  if they are good enough, like cam, to make it to the pros one day then they will make their money.  if they are not, they got a free education at a school they otherwise would never ever get into.
