Brady Hoke has talked to Minnesota

It's starting to look like Minnesota may finally be moving closer to their goal of finding a new head coach.  According to a few reports, San Diego State head coach Brady Hoke talked to an official from the University of Minnesota about the head coaching job over the weekend.  Hoke wouldn't go into details when asked about any meetings, but he did admit that a meeting took place.

"I did have an informal conversation about an opening that's out there," said Hoke. The Aztecs coach also said he wasn't going into any details "out of respect for that other school and the kids we have here that we're 100 percent committed to and will stay committed to."

Which sounds nice, but I'm not exactly sure how you can say you're 100 percent committed to the kids you currently have about 15 seconds after you admit you just talked to another school about another job.  Don't get me wrong, I'm not blaming Hoke for taking the meeting, I would too.

As for who Hoke had the meeting with, Monday Night Football sideline reporter Michelle Tafoya said on her radio show Tuesday that she shared a plane from San Diego back to Minnesota with a few familiar faces. Those faces being Minnesota athletic director Joel Maturi and his assistant Dave Mona. Though I suppose it's possible that they were just in San Diego for the weekend on holiday.

Minnesota has said that it would like to have its head coaching search wrapped up before the holidays, and while the prospect of finding someone before Thursday doesn't seem strong, it's possible that the school could have its coach by the end of next week.  After all, when Hoke left Ball State to take over in San Diego, he did so at the end of the regular season and before the bowl game.

It's not crazy to think he'd do it again.

Stay Brady Stay!

Dear Coach Hoke,

As an avid Aztecs sports fan and SDSU alumni I simply ask that you think long and hard about any career move.

First, look at all of the positive progress you & your superior staff have made to the Aztec program in two short years.  Don't forget that you should have two more wins this season if not for the zebras & instant replay officials. As with every program, winning brings better recruits. Better recruits & winning builds the program, increases alumni donations, and puts butts in the seats.

If you are a winner in SD they will love you for life.  And can you think of a better place to live?  It is not Minnesota that is a given.  I'll take sand in my toes versus snow up to my @$$ any day!

Don't be suprised if Hoke's name does not get mentioned to replace Rich Rodriguez.
If Michigan decides to fire Rich Rod after the OSU game  ( if UM loses ) and Michigan
can't get Harbaugh or Miles to take the job, Hoke would become a front runner to coach Big Blue.
Branden can deny the rumors all he wants, publicly he must, but a OSU blowout of Michigan would
more than likely be the last game for Rodriguez. As a UM fan I can only hope Branden has put contacts
out there to see how interested Harbaugh would be in taking over his alma mater. It would not make a
whole lot of sense to can Rodriguez unless you could get Harbaugh or Miles to replace him though.....

If a BCS Bowl is the goal, SDSU will get there much faster than Minnesota. The Gophers will not go undefeated in the next 100 years! The Aztecs were about 20 points away this year. I am sure that is why UM is looking out West at Hoke. Getting the West Coast talent that is available to Hoke at SDSU to go to the Artic Tundra will be a challenge IMHO.

Obviously the appeal is that he has his connections in the Midwest. But just do the Math! With Nebraska, Wisconsin, Iowa, then Mich, tOSU and Penn St...the disparity for Minnesota will just be even greater than ever. Minnesota will never be good again. I would weigh how far the $2Mil for only 3 years would go (since he would likely get fired by then) before giving up the 800K on Montezuma Mesa, which he can probably keep for 10 years if he can just average a 7-5 record. The upside possibilities in San Diego (and I know they've been saying that since Doug Scovil) are much higher. Its much easier to tilt the power in the MWC - which doesn't truly have a "traditional" power structure, especially with the departure of BYU - than it is to break up the tOSU/Mich/Wisc/Nebraska(new,but traditional power) quad.
Unless I missed my family, I'd stay renting in Pacific Beach if I was him.

Folks its the Big 10, regardless of what program it is I think there is much more of an incentive to Hoke to make the move. New stadium, more money, BCS bowls and a more overall attractive bowl lineup will attract a good young coach anytime. Not to take anything away from San Diego State but its a stepping stone just like Cincy was to Kelly and any other coach that wins there.

Build the Aztec program can beat UM right now!!!

I would rather make $800,000 and live in San Diego that 2 million and live in Minnesota.

At 800K a can live like royalty in SD and enjoy the planet's best climate.

You would have to be a FOOL to leave....IMHO>

He's an alum of Ball doubt he would stay there longer than other places.  Even then he left for a better job in another non-AQ conference.  Unless SDSU gets into an AQ conference or really steps up the compensation, he'll eventually be gone.  Will he leave for Minn?  Not sure why unless they are willing to pay more than SDSU...

Hoke aint going to Minn - if/when he wins next year (lots of returning starters, solid foundation) more prominent schools will reach out to him.  And he's only been at SDSU 2 years, he stayed at ball state for 6.  I could see him leaving for ND or Michigan.. but UM, I dont think so.

Patt and Pete have probably been talked to by lesser BCS schools, but they probably figure its better to stay for life and get invited to a BCS conference than run at a lower or mid-tier BCS school.  Its either get the money upfront and be out in 4 yours or get a lower salary but have it for practically life.
