Boise president, TCU AD blast Gee in response

Quite honestly, after Gordon Gee 's comments this morning , you knew it was coming. TCU athletic director Chris Del Conte , speaking on radio about his remarks:

Mmmm, that's some tasty sarcasm. (Conte also added a "they must be jealous " comment for good measure.) But compared to what Boise State president Bob Kustra had to say, Conte was positively genial. Kustra (emphasis added):
"The BCS has finally found someone to stand up and defend the indefensible … Everyone in intercollegiate football knows that athletic directors of those large power conferences are scheduling more and more teams who are I-AA, who are teams at the weaker end of the non-AQ conferences, and for Gee to stand up and talk about murderer’s row every week is just the height of folly. It’s ridiculous ...

"I just hope that when he speaks about his research profile or the quality of his university he’s a little more believable than he is about athletics, because he’s just so wrong on this one … Presidents who stand up and talk about values and trust and fairness and access and equity speak with forked tongue when it comes to athletics — and it makes no sense to me how they can be so absolutely wrong and know it and yet stand up as the pillars of moral rectitude.”
Come on, Dr. Kustra: tell us how you really feel. Unfortunately for Gee, with the majority of college football fans (though not a sizeable one) favoring some sort of playoff and the bow-tied Ohio State president's remarks bearing the unmistakable stench of gridiron elitism, even if few fans outside of Boise and Fort Worth share Kustra's intensity regarding the matter, those feelings seem likely to carry this day in college football's court of public opinion.

I am not aware of any school ducking Boise.  Even the Boise president said that the big boys would play them, but his complaint is that they will not go to his 35k seat blue field stadium.  Why would an LSU or an Alabama lose 2 million dollars to go and play in Boise?  Georgia and Ole Miss have both agreed to neutral site games, and that is the best that the little guys can hope for.

The more drama there is in college football, the better off we'll be. Eventually they will be forced to succumb to the nationwide pressure and implement a playoff system.

Everyone used to think it was cute when Fresno State's motto was "Anybody, Anywhere, Anytime!"  Or when Appalachian State goes into the big House and beats the Maize and Blue.  How about when a Southern Miss team led by Brett Favre beats Bobby Bowdens beloved Florida State, oh thats great.  But God forbid, these small also ran programs start to whittle their way into the Big Money the Power Conferences have been keeping for years.  The Bowl System is antiquated.  Watch and see how many Big Ten and SEC teams play on New Year's Day.  I would  venture to guess that NONE of these schools would play Boise or TCU in a home and home series.  Why do you suppose Texas won't play TCU?  Gee is an idiot and Dr. Kustra speaks the truth and from the heart

The problem isn't that Boise or TCU cannot compete with power conference schools.  They clearly have shown they can compete.  The problem a lot of us have is we think they have a much easier path.  Boise beat Oklahoma.  Utah beat Bama.  The question is if they had to do it in the middle of the season and have it after TExas AM and before Nebraska, or in the middle of LSU and FLorida, could they maintain the win streak and play for it all?  When comparing schedules the Boise Pres looks silly.  He wants to point to 3 non conf games and completely discounts the bulk of the schedules.  If the power conferences schedule all but Boise from the WAC they will say they schedule soft but yet that is 75% of Boise schedule.  Boise can get up one game and play anyone in the country but having the luxury of getting up for it as opposed to it being just another game in the schedule is the difference. This notion that everyone ducks them is a straw man argument.  If they thried scheduling USC, Bama, and Nebraska in the same season it would be one thing but they are buidling their ranking on beating up the WAC and looking for one "good" game and one "okay" game.

Well, we have no real way of knowing this given the big boys have ducked Boise and TCU at every chance the last few years, instead scheduling the usual lower-tier I-A and I-AA tomato cans for their guaranteed wins

They wouldn't crack the top 3 of any major college conference, SEC, Big 10, Big 12, Pac 10, heck, I'll even throw in the ACC.

That is completely baseless....they seem to have no problem beating teams from those conferences who have enough sac to schedule a game with them....or end up playing them in a bowl game...

College football is a joke.

Yes, unfortunately for Gee, most college fans want a playoff. That can be 51%-49%.
Fortunately for Gee, most college fans also agree with him on this one. Boise State does not belong. They wouldn't crack the top 3 of any major college conference, SEC, Big 10, Big 12, Pac 10, heck, I'll even throw in the ACC.
