Vandy interested in Gus Malzahn

The news just broke this morning that Vanderbilt head coach Robbie Caldwell had resigned, and that today's game against Wake Forest would be his last. This happened barely two hours ago, but the rumors about who Vanderbilt will be pursuing to replace Caldwell have already begun.  It seems that Vandy isn't looking outside the SEC for its top choice.

Not surprisingly, that choice seems to be Auburn offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn.

Now, as Schad mentions in his tweet, Gus Malzahn will be one of the most sought after coaches during the offseason.  Everyone has seen what he's done on the offensive side of the ball during his coaching career, particularly this season with Cam Newton and Auburn.  So it isn't surprising at all that Vanderbilt would be interested.

What would be surprise would be to see Malzahn take the job at Vanderbilt.  Listen, I don't mean this as an insult to Vanderbilt, but let's be real here. Gus Malzahn can find a lot better head coaching job than Vanderbilt. He'll have his choice of any position that becomes available, be it one we already know of, or one that will come open after the season.

Vanderbilt is not the kind of school that Malzahn could walk into and experience success quickly, as the Commodores have a long mountain to climb if they want to contend in the SEC.  Sure, Malzahn would be a fantastic start to getting that accomplished, but I just can't see it happening.

I would say that T. Evans at FoxSports is a bigger idiot (and really is), but the problem is Schad, Evans and Schalbach(sp?) are all in cahoots with spreading stupidity.  That being said, the job I would be worried about him leaving for is Miami.  The problem that Auburn is soon to pose to any school looking at him is his potential price tag.  He's a proven commodity at OC, but not HC and he's soon to be making over 1M a year as an OC.  How high is a school willing to go to get him there as a HC?  Chizik at Auburn will make probably over 2M this year BECAUSE of incentives, but otherwise is dwarfed by other salaries in the SEC.

Schad has got to be the biggest idiot in the media business.  Well may J. Darin beats him a little but they are close.  Malzahn to Vandy?  Why even waste time writing garbage like that.  Couldn't you find more trash on Cam to write about?

I would love to see Vandy do good but I hope Malzahn ends up at Miami.

At this point, does anyone care about anything Schad says?  He's a moron that spews whatever he hears in the line at McDonalds.  Besides, if Malzhan wants to go, he will have some options.  I would also suggest that it's going to have to be a pretty good one that gives him a legit shot to win.  He's going to be given another sizeable raise after this season where he'll be the highest paid OC in the nation at between $1M-1.5M before bonuses. Not too bad when you don't have to be the head dude and all that comes with it.  To Jay, I'm assuming you didn't attend Vandy.

No disrespect, but I watched the Black and Gold game this year with a coaching buddy of mine. We left with a bad feeling for Vandy. There was nothing in the cupboard. It was not surprise to us when Johnson left and Caldwell announcing today wasn't a shock either. The kids try hard but the difference in SEC talent and the players at Vanderbilt has never been more glaring. Good luck.

coach at vandy.

Vandy needs a coach who going to at least have a fun offense and a defense that can stop ppl, the fans at vandy would go out and support a team that going to be exciting and beat ut or florida here and there. vandy fans dont expect vandy football to go undefeated like ut fans talk about year after year, we need a coach who can be a great fit for vandy like we have in basketball and baseball. Vandy can put up 6 or 7 wins a year and get into a bowl on yearly basis if vandy will be more interested in what the fans want to see on the field. The product on field now is good on  defense but is a joke on offense, Vandy has no qb that why there lacking a scoreless offense.

i think it crazy for vandy to consider gus, he not what vandy needs. look at all the hype around cam newton of payoffs, vandy dont need this. as far as bobbby bowden goes for he ran a dirty program the last few years at fsu, so why does vandy want bobby bowden.

Sorry, but Coach Malzahn deserves a lot more than a HC spot at Vanderbilt. Vandy AIN'T Auburn and never will be. Recruiting is the most valuable asset relating to the athlete perspective. Without the athletes, no coach can be successful.
