There was a whole lot of uproar and outrage coming from the Pacific Northwest following Oregon's win over Cal a few weeks ago, as there was plenty of evidence that Cal players were faking injuries on defense in an attempt to slow the Oregon offense down during the Ducks' 15-13 win on November 13. It was rather obvious in this video that a Cal defensive lineman wasn't really hurt when he went down, unless a sniper in the crowd shot him in the leg with a BB gun.

Well, head coach Jeff Tedford denied it at first, but now it seems that the head coach has changed his tune.  Cal suspended defensive line coach Tosh Lupoi over the weekend for being the mastermind behind the evil plot.

"This is a young coach who made a mistake. We make mistakes in life a lot," said Cal AD Sandy Barbour in a statement. "He stood up and he accepted responsibility for it. The head coach accepted responsibility for it and I accepted responsibility for it. That's what we do as educators."

While Lupoi may have fallen on his sword, Tedford has no plans on firing him.

"I respect him a great deal," Tedford said. "In the heat of the battle and trying to get a substitution in, he used poor judgment. That's no reflection on his character whatsoever or his love for Cal and the program. ... He's a great football coach. A mistake was made. I'm sure we'll learn from it as a whole. We will make sure that we stand for the right things and move forward."

Yes, I'm sure Tedford and his coaching staff will learn from it in the future.  Next year, they'll make sure that their players know to fake the injury before being sent out there, instead of waiting for a signal from a rogue coach on the sideline.  Whom I'm sure was acting alone.

The head coach and D-Coordinator were in the dark while it was happening--yeah right!  Some BS in the BCS!

I don't know where some people get off saying this is reflective of the Univesity, it's professors, or has anything to do with their politics.  Ridiculous.

Equally ridiculous is the statement that this was a spur of the moment, bad decision.  To be able to communicate to a player to fake an injury from the sideline there had to be some discussion prior to the event.  Even if you give Cal the full benefit of the doubt and say it was just one time, the excuse simply does not hold up.  There is no question this was a preconceived plan, the coach drew it up and executed it.

This is not going to be the end of this story, not by a long shot.  Now that the HC has admitted that the assistant coach cheated there is going to be a lot of scrutiny of the punishment which is just a suspension.  Now this becomes reflective of Cal as an instuition and I don't know how Cal can stand up and tell players that cheating or breaking the rules is wrong when the coach(es) are doing it.

I think there is going to be a lot more to come on this story, this is the type of issue that if not handled just right could easily cost a head coach his job.

Claymmore: your statistics are interesting but an innaccurate measurement of your point.  You are counting the number of times that a school has been caught and punished.  It's pretty obvious that two other categories exist: Schools that aren't caught and schools that obviously have players breaking the rules but the conference (or NCAA) doesn't do anything despite the obvious infraction.  Pretending that nothing happened as certain leads are intentionally not followed can hardly be ignored.  (Where did that church get the money?  Odd that such a sacred institution needs to hide the source of their money.)

"Only an idiot can believe that sincerely held political opinions are a sign of poor character, but people are regularly and publicly accused of charater flaws because they don't share your political beliefs"

All political beliefs? How about political beliefs that lead to genocide like nazi socialists? You are being the "idiot" now. We are in the USA where opinions are free and criticizm is allowed. If a political belief is sincere, that is fine, but not allowing criticizm of that belief as a character flaw is flat out wrong. Political beliefs are part of everyone's character, and if that belief deserves criticism then so-be-it. What sincere beliefs are "off-limits" to criticism in your opinion?

Why don't we just stop calling people names, and make everyone believe that they are right, and give everybody a little trophy, and hold hands, and if something bad happens its nobody's fault, and our country will continue to spiral into the abyss that is "political correctness" where nobody knows how to learn from mistakes or TAKE criticism.

And if you are an educated, true political socialist who can defend your point of view, YOU DON'T LOVE THIS COUNTRY!!! If you want to change the USA toward a socialist "utopia" then those people are flawed in the way they think, and DESERVE criticism.

I don't normally post, especially when politics is brought to a sports board, but I just found your post incredibly hypocritical.

As far as cheating, the SEC can only claim second place. If you want real chaeters, the Big 12 is No. 1. 55 infractions, followed by the SEC (48), the Pac-10 (41) and the Big Ten (40). The saddest school is SMU with 8 infractions, they got the Death penalty and died. The funniest school is Arizona State tied for first with SMU. They cheat and can only win badminton, archery, and baseball. The cleanest school of them all? The University of Chicago, they gave up their Big 10 seat because they thought big time athletics has nothing to do with gong to school.

Go Maroons!

Smart idea.  Make the field goal and Cal wins.  Great strategy by an undermaned team.  Wish they would have won!

We learned from the previous presidential administration that there must be a fall guy for mistakes in judgment.  It happened several times (Brown, Libby, etc.).  He probably got a big raise to take the blame.

"They are tipical socialist educators with no sense of honor or dignity. "

People like you are a serious part of what is wrong with this country.  Only an idiot can believe that sincerely held political opinions are a sign of poor character, but people are regularly and publicly accused of charater flaws because they don't share your political beliefs.  I have news for you: Americans who happen to be socialist (and I am not one) love this country, were taught well by their parents, and are equally capable of honesty as any red state conservative.  Grow up and stop calling people names because they don't see things exactly the way you do.
