Alabama fires 'DJ' from Iron Bowl

Before the Iron Bowl on Friday, Cam Newton and his Auburn teammates warmed up on the field to a couple of specially selected songs.  Newton had already been showered in fake money by the Alabama student section as he made his way to the field, and once he was out there the songs "Son of a Preacher Man" and "Take the Money and Run."

Obviously, the selections were in reference to the rumors that Newton's father Cecil Newton, a preacher, was shopping his son to the highest bidder after he left Florida. Honestly, when I heard about all of this before the game started, I found it to be rather amusing.  Maybe it wasn't the classiest way to go about things, but it wasn't exactly harmful.

Well, unless that was what motivated Newton to lead the Tigers back from a 24-0 deficit and win the game, but considering how things went in the first half, i doubt that's the case.  Either way, the man who was in charge of those musical selections has been fired by the school.

"Our processes require that all music and videos played in the stadium prior to and during every game be carefully scripted and approved by a senior administrator in the Athletics Department," Alabama public relations director Deborah Lane said in a statement. "The former staff member deviated from the script that had been approved for the game with Auburn, and the University took steps to immediately terminate his contract."

"The University of Alabama takes great pride in our football team's long-standing tradition of playing the game with dignity and class, and showing respect for players and coaches of opposing teams. We are disappointed when the actions of any staff member undermine our deeply held values and expectations."

Am I the only one who finds this to be a bit of an overreaction?  So the guy played some songs that weren't on a pre-selected list,* it's not like he set the building on fire here.  Now, had he started playing some Justin Bieber, then by all means, fire him. Heck, lock him up, but all he did was play a couple of songs as a joke.

A joke on the best player of the school's biggest rival, in what was the biggest game of the season for both schools.  I mean, isn't stuff like that what a rivalry is basically all about?  You're not supposed to like your rival, and I don't see any problem with having a little fun with him.

Besides, that's nothing compared to what Newton probably heard from fans in the stands.  Are the students who threw money at him going to get in trouble too?

*By the way, I'd love to be in on those meetings.  "Listen, I'm cool with 'Who Let The Dogs Out' but if you think I'm playing 'Zombie Nation' you can just get the hell out of this meeting right now."

I'll consider taking something you say seriously when you spell even a handful of words correctly.

It amounted to the wonderful maturity we all expect from bama folks.  I could have cared less about it though.  As I said, Auburn fans expect it from bama fans pure and simple.  I really don't think it exactly distracted the team, much less Cam.  If anything it just peaves them off a little more, and fires them up for the game.  Now would it have been nice if that fire had included defense in the 1stQ...yes.

To the buckeye fan.  You're a sharp one, lemme tell ya.  So how's the record against the SEC going for ya?  Up for another round this year?  Y'all are better off staying up north where it's safe for you and you can keep your superiority complex.  Every time you seem to come south it seems to get burst.  I think we'd be willing to let y'all play the #3 or 4 team for the SEC West this year.  I think you remember LSU and have seen bama.

The Tide is so delusional, who do they think they are? To fire a guy for a song choice like that just makes them look dumbers that the act itself. Do they now think they are pilliars of the college football world....pisssst please (Ozzie Gullien voice)

As for Newton, this guy makes Reggie Bush look like a straight arrow. The rumors and stories have been floating around for years about this guy. If only 10% of them are true then this guy is a piece of work. I have a vested intrest in seeing Aurburn win the NC and hate to talk bad about a young kid but he just comes off a bit slimey. Hope for my family member at Aurburn they win but I have a feeling it will be a USC forfit down the road deal, but who cares right?

These two schools have been buying players for years, we all have (OU, best players money can buy).

Heard Cam stole a girl's class notes while at UF to help pass a test... and when the school authorities came to his apt to get it back, he threw it out the window before they could get it

Where on earth are you getting you information?  It wasn't class notes that he threw out a window.  Really?  They send the campus police to your room to retrieve borrowed class notes?  Last I checked, borrowing notes was not a crime.

It wasn't the school officials that showed up to his room to retrieve anything to begin with.  It was the police, and it was a stolen laptop that he threw out a window.

That is freakin hilarious.  I wasn't tuned into the game early enough to catch that part.  That is so completley wrong I wouldn't know what to do if I was Cam Newon.  The kid did not deserve that.  I heard that the two teams hated each other, but DAM!!  That DJ has a huge set of balls.

Completely wrong and undeserving.  Honestly, but FREAKIN HILARIOUS!!

As far as the student section throwing things on the field during warm ups - I've never heard anyone refer to the student section @ UofA as classy.  As far as the pre-game music guys goes, they are making an example out of him because they lost.

W/ that said, not all of the bammers/mullets have no class (some of them aren't too bad).

If the University wanted to make an example of the classlessness in Tuscaloosa, they do an investigation into who through items onto the field at opposing teams.

Until any real action is taken, it's just the same blame game that always goes on there everytime they lose. (Let's fire the pre-game music guy - yeah, that's why Auburn beat us & it will make us look like we can lose with class now)

Something in the water in that town that makes people lose of few IQ points

Even though it's a college game, you are supposed to be professional. If it was a college kid getting paid 6.50, then that's funny. But if it the guy was in a union and got paid a bunch, he's an idiot.

None of this nonsense happens at THE Ohio State University.  Yeah, you had Troy Smith and Clarrett and their stereos and boosters and the mafia and all that garbage, but The Shoe now? .......It's a fortress!  Tressel and the A.D. won't tolerate that crap!  Forget Cam Newton!  He's one and done, straight and simple.  As for the music? Funny stuff, and yes, Cam deserves it.  This sounds almost like the Petrovic case in that this man of God somehow, someway failed miserably raising his son.  It's disgusting, really, like the college commitment process has anything in common with ebay, right?!?  Good luck to both teams in the future, and 'Bama's next once they find out how these guys are all cheating by shooting chemicals in their ***es!  Goooo, Bucks!

Good gamesmanship =

= poor sportsmanship.  It's just a game, Focker.  Leave your MMA attitude at home.  Come see how much fun a college football game can be without crassness!
