Report: Greg Davis out at Texas

With a 5-7 season, there wasn't much doubt that heads were going to roll at Texas this offseason.  Mack Brown has been hinting at it for the last few weeks, saying last week that this season was the coaches fault, and not the players. The most likely candidate to get the ax is offensive coordinator Greg Davis, as he's the one who the fans have been calling for, and the best way to appease an angry fan base who might be after you in the near future is to give them what they want.

It seems Brown may have done that.

According to Geoff Ketchum of, Greg Davis is out at Texas.

Personally I wasn't sure Davis deserved to be fired, but I'm not shocked that it has reportedly happened.  Still, Davis had to run an offense with a new quarterback this season, and not everybody can be Colt McCoy or Vince Young.  Just because Garrett Gilbert might not be of the caliber of McCoy or Young in his first season as a starter doesn't mean the coach should be fired.  Vince Young had his turnover struggles in his first season as well, and things turned out fine his senior year.

Though angry fan bases often don't want to listen to reason.

"Though angry fan bases often don't want to listen to reason."

If you were willing to actually show some reason yourself, we might listen.  But references to Vince Young's senior season at Texas don't do much for your crediility.  Your ability to name two Texas QBs doesn't prove that you have a handle on the offensive problems.  In fact, it suggests that you probably believe an offense succeeds or fails based on the talent at one position.

Garrett Gilbert was not the problem on this Texas offense. Colt McCoy did a nice job of covering for the problems with his ability to scramble and improvise.  People who have actually paid attention to Texas football over the last decade are well aware of this...and the fact that Vince Young didn't play a senior season.

Texas won in the past because of their talent despite the predictable offensive callings of Greg Davis.  Just think if we had a great offensive coordinator that made the players play above their talent level instead of at or below (Mike Leach would be an interesting thought).  If we had then maybe Texas would have at least one more National Championship and 2 Big 12 Titles rather than seeing the collapse of this season.  Texas will be back next year and the win over Nebraska will sting even more with the down year as we bid farewell to the red nation- GO HORNS!

I don't believe Tom Fornelli knows what he's talking about nor has he witnessed firsthand the misery of closely watching Greg Davis waste top ten talent year-after-year.  The story on paper (the only knowledge boasted by Tom Forelli) doesn't even begin to accurately reflect how much Greg Davis has hampered UT offenses over the years.  Fortunately for Greg Davis Texas Offenses have always had enough superstar talent to overcome his poor game planning, play calling ability, and overall lack of creativity.

Report: Greg Davis out at Texas

Yea! We'll probably have to wait after the New Year's Bowls to find out the identity of the new OC. Knowing Greg Davis isn't the OC will make this the Happiest of Holidays for me. Watch "I am Greg Davis" at Did you know Greg Davis invented and perfected the East-West offense and the prevent offense? I couldn't be happier.

There's a lot of talk about the players and head coach needing to be held accountable, but I disagree.

Greg was given total control over the offense, for good or bad that is a fact.

The players need to be given a pass also because these kids, and they are kids, need to be coached.
They also need to be motivated and given an offensvie scheme that will help not hinder.

The offense UT has been running since Ricky Williams left is so predictable defenses were always beating the offenBosive players to the point of attack.

UT's success over the last decade was due to outstanding talent on the Forty Acres.

Colt McCoy
Vince Young
Jamal Charles
Cedric Benson
Ahmad Hall
David Thomas
Limas Sweed
Jermichael Finley
Jordan Shipley
Quan Cosby
Bo Scaife
Chris Ogbonnaya

And the list doesn't even include the offensive linemen currently on NFL rosters, or the defensive players who won their fair share of games. Included in the list above are four running backs, yet during Vince and Colt's career at UT they were the leading rusher for too many of those years.
When you have that kind of talent and you can't get them their yards means the offense was not good.

Yes he accomplished much, who wouldn't with that kind of talent, there are many who accomplish much more with far less talent.
How many players from Boise St, TCU, Utah are currently playing in the NFL, not many, but they continually outperform UT in the running game.

Finally this goes out to the true Longhorn fans, the ones who read every sentence written about the horns, heard every interview I present my final piece of evidence.

The gameplan was too conservative.
We abandoned the running game too soon.
We should have played (insert any player name) more.

I'm paraphrasing of course, but the point is made. You can use those excuses, maybe once a year, but this was a constant message coming out the UT OC's mouth week after week for over a decade and unfortunately it took a horrible year

5-7 is a rough season...but Vince Young won a national championship and McCoy was the winningest college quarterback in college history, so the guy had to be doing something right. Texas lost a lot of big time college football players from last year to it sounds like a knee-jerk reaction after one down year to me.

Coaches can only Coach they can`t go onto the field and play. I am a Sooner Fan and people have been calling for Stoops, Wilson and Venables head for the last couple of years. I`m glad they are still there. Eventually it comes down to the Players and the overrated star system. Supposedly Texas and Notre Dame get all these 5 star Players, but yet Texas after appearing in the National Championship Game goes 5-7 and how is that Coaching Carousel working out for ND these days. Gilbert is not McCoy or Young and Greg Davis will end up on his feet somewhere. He was fine when you all were in the Championship Game but now he all of a sudden stinks. It`s the Players people.

The Eyes of Texas are upon you!!!

This Oklahoma Fan obiviously has no clue about Texas Football and the quetionable play calling that has gone on for far to long.  Take away the 2005 championship and the Vince Young unbelievable skills and Greg Davis hasn't done much since Ricky Williams but you didn't have to he run through, around and over defenses by himself.

I am a huge Texas fan it is about our team is young and will be back.

Let's get together have a great off-season and come back and smash those Sooners...Gilbert will mature and so will everything else on that heard it here first the defense will be something to deal with.

Kudos to Brown for making this move after a horrible offensive year.

Let's hope Urban "oh" Meyer has the balls to do the same and fire his dim-wiitted buddy who has presided over the worst offensive performance by a Gator team since pre-Spurrier days. Even Zook's offenses never looked as bad as this year's offense for Florida. Man up Meyer and fire or at least demote Addazio.

The irony is Zook may have the chance to beat UF as many think UF will play Illinois in the fittingly named Viagra "boner" bowl.
