Report: Greg Davis out at Texas

With a 5-7 season, there wasn't much doubt that heads were going to roll at Texas this offseason.  Mack Brown has been hinting at it for the last few weeks, saying last week that this season was the coaches fault, and not the players. The most likely candidate to get the ax is offensive coordinator Greg Davis, as he's the one who the fans have been calling for, and the best way to appease an angry fan base who might be after you in the near future is to give them what they want.

It seems Brown may have done that.

According to Geoff Ketchum of Orangebloods.com, Greg Davis is out at Texas.

Personally I wasn't sure Davis deserved to be fired, but I'm not shocked that it has reportedly happened.  Still, Davis had to run an offense with a new quarterback this season, and not everybody can be Colt McCoy or Vince Young.  Just because Garrett Gilbert might not be of the caliber of McCoy or Young in his first season as a starter doesn't mean the coach should be fired.  Vince Young had his turnover struggles in his first season as well, and things turned out fine his senior year.

Though angry fan bases often don't want to listen to reason.

Report: Greg Davis out at Texas

I have to throw in my 2 cents. I've watched both UT and OU play and they both have the same inability of running the football. The hogs up front need to control the line of scrimmage and let the TB rip 4-5 yard chunks at a time, setting up the pass. Wilson would rather run a draw on 3-12, and Davis only ran to appease others. Texas could do me a favor and when Davis' buss pulls out of town, make a stop up here to Norman and grab Wilson.

Vince Young never had a senior season. Won the championship as a junior and entered the draft. Don't you sports writers do any research?

We simply need a speedy quarteback and return to the spread.  The spread is the college version of the west coast.  Even in the west coast the quarterback requires escapability from the pocket.  Colt is having success because he is talented.  Vince needs a new team.  Longhorns need a new quarterback with speed.  This will allow for the other runningbacks to contribute effectively and open up the passing game even more.

Outstanding pick for our next Off Coord...this is what we need to carry us thru to the BCS.  We have to average at least 30 points a game to get in..look around (Oregon, Arkansas, OU, AUBURN, TEXAS W/VINCE AVG 50).  Plus, an athletic QB (remember Vince and Colt) would not hurt either.  Yes, we had Major but he got screwed because of Chris.  We need speed at the position to put added pressure on Defensive Coordinators to scheme defenses.  PLEASE ALLOW OTHERS AT THE POSITION TO COMPETE.  Give each a chnce early in the season to show their talents.

Hey buddy,

College players do not lose scholarships due to athletic performance.  They lose them do to academics or behavior but can not lose them because of an inability to perform.  Sure some schools make things real uncomfortable for guys that don't pan out. but if the kid continues to show up for practice and work hard they never lose their Scholly.

I've been waiting for this move since the 2001 Big 12 Championship game.
Texas has won the past few years due to enormous talent and in spite of the offensive coordinator, whose playbook has consisted of 3 pages for the last decade.
It's like Christmas came early this year in Austin.

"but you can't fire a college player. You also can't trade them or release them"

are you serious?   i usually don't say anything here unless it's constructive, but you're a moron.  Ever heard of anyone losing a scholarship?  Not traveling with the team ? Not lettering due to lack of play? It's not a new concept and players are dropped from teams and scholarships taken away allllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll

llllllllll the tiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiime! This is also known as "getting reeased...aka fired!  Delete your account and just read

ouchuckno1,

I don't blame you for being blind to the talk that's been going on since WELL BEFORE Vince single handedly made Greg Davis look like a genius and WELL AFTER Colt McCoy (also an NFL starter as a rookie) and Jordan Shipley (ditto) managed to serve as a massive bandaid for his lame, ineffective offensive schemes and play calling. I don't really keep up with what goes on up there in Norman either, so you get a pass.

However, you're dead wrong. He was NOT "fine" when we were in the championship gameS.  Greg Davis was "persuaded" against his own judgment to let Vince run his high school system and voila: we stomped everyone in the Big 12 including the Sooners on the way to the MNC over U$C.

Then we were lucky enough to get Colt McCoy who accounted for the vast majority of our rushing totals, thereby masking the gaping wound that was our backfield (read: Tailback) ground game.

So during this past off season, Greg "Genius" Davis says he's going to install a power, downhill rushing offense. Hah! What happens?

Here's but a small example: We put an RB in during the first series of the game and he averages 9 YPC over 3-4 carries. He never sees the field again in that game. At all. No injury. Nothing. Just absof*ckinglutely idiotic offensive scheme.

Then there's the horizontal passing game and the piss poor TE and WR utilization - and the inability to recruit solid OLmen. All on GD.

Good riddance, Davis. And to think; if we had a real OC this year we'd have stomped a mudhole in OU. Instead they squeaked out of Dallas with a lucky win and back into yet another B12CG. But I hope you beat Nebraska and let them know not to let the door hit their collective ass on the way out.

This could help or hurt them next year.  Oftentimes, when coaches are fired after a bad year, the turnover ends up making things worse.  Since Mack won't be around much longer anyway with a coach-in-waiting, I guess it's not such a big deal to him.  But if I were a Longhorn fan, I wouldn't want a firesale on the coaching staff just yet.  They should rebound really well next year. There's too much talent not too, right?

Mack Brown did take responsibility during his interview on a segment of College Gameday about 3 weeks and also put it on his coaching staff..He blamed everyone for not getting the players ready to play 12 games a yr as he stated, and his self was included..Im not so sure it is Davis s' fault as much as it is the offense not having a leader at the qb position and no identity...problem we have with Davis is he didnt help in becoming Gilbert the leader of the offense..He regressed instead of progressed throughout the season..he never got better, he just continued to play worse and worse and the rest of the offense quit on him and the defense quit because of poor play on the offense.lead to the defense being on the field basically the whole game...Somebody had to go, and a 9 win coach every year since 1998 wasnt going to be the one..
