Report: Greg Davis out at Texas

With a 5-7 season, there wasn't much doubt that heads were going to roll at Texas this offseason.  Mack Brown has been hinting at it for the last few weeks, saying last week that this season was the coaches fault, and not the players. The most likely candidate to get the ax is offensive coordinator Greg Davis, as he's the one who the fans have been calling for, and the best way to appease an angry fan base who might be after you in the near future is to give them what they want.

It seems Brown may have done that.

According to Geoff Ketchum of Orangebloods.com, Greg Davis is out at Texas.

Personally I wasn't sure Davis deserved to be fired, but I'm not shocked that it has reportedly happened.  Still, Davis had to run an offense with a new quarterback this season, and not everybody can be Colt McCoy or Vince Young.  Just because Garrett Gilbert might not be of the caliber of McCoy or Young in his first season as a starter doesn't mean the coach should be fired.  Vince Young had his turnover struggles in his first season as well, and things turned out fine his senior year.

Though angry fan bases often don't want to listen to reason.

'sniff sniff', I smell a scape goat.  If Mack Brown said this season was "the coaches' fault", where is his responsibility or is he throwing all of his coaches under the bus while he drives it?

ouchuckno1 - Give me a break! Maybe the players don't live up to expectations, but you can't fire a college player. You also can't trade them or release them. So, you have to ax the coaches.

And I take exception to the suggestion that Kevin Wilson and Brent Venables shouldn't be fired. Wilson should definitely be fired, and Venables should be right behind him if something doesn't change in the next couple of seasons. Both are terribly overrated coordinators.

Coaches can only Coach they can`t go onto the field and play. I am a Sooner Fan and people have been calling for Stoops, Wilson and Venables head for the last couple of years. I`m glad they are still there. Eventually it comes down to the Players and the overrated star system. Supposedly Texas and Notre Dame get all these 5 star Players, but yet Texas after appearing in the National Championship Game goes 5-7 and how is that Coaching Carousel working out for ND these days. Gilbert is not McCoy or Young and Greg Davis will end up on his feet somewhere. He was fine when you all were in the Championship Game but now he all of a sudden stinks. It`s the Players people.

Truer words were never spoken.  His pass happy play calling is the main reason that top flight backs don't come to Texas.  He totally wasted Jamaal Charles' time while he was there.  Charles was a threat to score everytime he touched the football but was repeatedly taken out in certain situations.  I'll be interested to see who they hire but I say good riddance.  With the talent that Texas recruits on a regular basis and the incoming 5 star TB Malcom Brown, I'm sure UT will have no problem recruiting a top flight OC.  Keep your eye on Major Applewhite too.  Mack likes him but no sure if he's ready.
