Student newspaper calls out Wisconsin students

With the official announcement that Wisconsin would be going to the Rose Bowl to take on TCU on Sunday, the school put 5,800 student tickets up for sale on its website on Sunday night.  Within 20 minutes every ticket had been sold, and there were plenty of Wisconsin students left in the cold with no way to get to Pasadena without paying for a regular ticket, or perhaps, a scalped one.

Well I know where those Wisconsin students can buy one of those scalped tickets.  They can be bought from a few of those students who have already purchased the student tickets and have no intention of going to the game.  Luckily, thanks to the Badger Herald -- the school's student newspaper -- those students are a lot easier to find.

The paper published a list of names of students who are currently attempting to sell their Rose Bowl tickets on Facebook and other places like Craigslist. The paper also had a special message for those same students.
Truly, there is a special place in Hell for people who buy Rose Bowl tickets with the sole intention of profiting from them. It is entirely unfair to those who actually love this football team and were counting on a cheap face value ticket in order to make the trip to Pasadena an economic reality.
We'll keep printing names of those we catch on Facebook marketplace. And feel free to send an email to editor@badgerherald.com if you know of anybody whose name should be added to the list — particularly the 100 people who have already made a listing on Craigslist.
We also ask this of UW Athletics: Next time, make it so people have to pick their tickets up at the bowl site. That will keep the worst people on campus from cheating the system.

I know an editor who couldn't get tickets!

Seriously, saying there's a special place in hell for these kids is a bit over the line, isn't it?  Most students in college don't exactly have a lot of money lying around because they can only work part-time jobs thanks to that whole "going to school" portion of their day.  So I can't fault a kid for using this as a chance to make some extra beer money.

This is America, after all.  I'm pretty sure that this is exactly how capitalism works.

PICK UP TICKETS IN PASEDENA?

I see how this might be a decent idea,, if it were'nt for all the facts surrounding this.  First, if anything happened, and that student couldn't go, they should have the right to sell the ticket to someone else and not have to fly to CA to do so.  Also, in 1994, many sutdents were promised tickets upon arrival to Pasedena and when they got there, no tickets.  This turned out to be a scam as part of a package and a lot of students flew out onlyo find that thad no hotel or ticets.  These people are within there right to scalp the tickets.  They got them and someone else wants them.  That is capitalism.  I don't liek it and Iwish  wouldn't happen, but it does.

As a former Wisconsin student I can tell you scalping is huge at the university.  I lost in the lottery twice and spent way too much for season tickets buying them from Xiyang Phan one year and Soo Chin the next.  I assume they were huge football fans that have countless channels in China, Korea, wherever pertaining to football and college football.  It's a joke and the university does not give two shits about its students as long as the tickets sell to someone.

What a brilliant idea.....

make a few extra bucks and save yourself the trouble of having to watch TCU humiliate you in person.

Bernard Madoff compared to profiting from tickets... so that pretty much sums up your opinion here???

What a laugher!!!

There IS value to these tickets (no so for Bernie) and bravo to the profiteers for taking advantage of the system. If someone is willing to pay big $ to attend the Rose then they are entitled to do so just as much as the students are entitled to buy the tickets and resell them. This is EXACTLY CAPITALISM!!! Buyer and Seller agree upon a price...tickets and money are exchanged. This is exactly what occurred for the OSU game in Madtown this year where was the Badger Herald then? The only difference here is that it is the ROSE BOWL. There are only 92,000 seats in the Rose Bowl and no one is going to get in without a ticket so they have VALUE.

What happens to these opportunists if they cannot sell the tickets (granted unlikely)? Then they are out the cash and looking for a way to use their ticket.

People who don't have the tickets are ticked off because they are not profiting (my guess is that the Badger Herald Reporters fit this bill). If the paper wants to complain then they need to look at the system that UW uses to sell tickets. If students are profiting from it then they are not priced correctly. The fact is that the ONLY non-capitalist event taking place here is the University Ticket office policy (too bad, so sad!!!).

When the UW Journalism Students finally enter the REAL World they will find that it is surprisingly UNFAIR. You don’t always get what you want and sometimes people other than you benefit. I know it’s a shocker!!!

I guess that I should expect this from UW Madison since it is a bastion of Liberal Bleeding Hearts, but it is pretty pathetic to blame the students for this. I seem to recall this same event taking place in 1994, 1998 and 1999, but I don’t remember the paper pulling this kind of hit piece against other students. Congrats UW Big Brother and Uncle Stalin now run the Badger Herald, but I guess I already knew that.

"Are there no prisons?" asked Scrooge.

"Plenty of prisons," said the gentleman, laying down the pen again.

"And the Union workhouses?"  demanded Scrooge.  "Are they still in operation?"

"They are.  Still," returned the gentleman, "I wish I could say they were not."

"The Treadmill and the Poor Law are in full vigour, then?"  said Scrooge.

"Both very busy, sir."

"Oh!  I was afraid, from what you said at first, that something had occurred to stop them in their useful course," said Scrooge.  "I'm very glad to hear it."

"Under the impression that they scarcely furnish Christian cheer of mind or body to the multitude," returned the gentleman, "a few of us are endeavouring to raise a fund to buy the Poor some meat and drink and means of warmth.  We choose this time, because it is a time, of all others, when Want is keenly felt, and Abundance rejoices.  What shall I put you down for?"

"Nothing!" Scrooge replied.

"You wish to be anonymous?"

"I wish to be left alone," said Scrooge.  "Since you ask me what I wish, gentlemen, that is my answer.  I don't make merry myself at Christmas and I can't afford to make idle people merry.  I help to support the establishments I have mentioned -- they cost enough; and those who are badly off must go there."

"Many can't go there; and many would rather die."

"If they would rather die," said Scrooge, "they had better do it, and decrease the surplus population."

Student newspaper calls out Wisconsin students

Auburn has run a lottery for nearly every neutral site or bowl game in my experience.  Even for the SEC championship game.  But with the National Championship game coming up, they finally are forcing students to pick up the tickets in Arizona.  While it removes some ticket possibilities for alumni like myself, I'd just as soon have a ton of Auburn students make the trip I was dying to make in 2004.

Student newspaper calls out Wisconsin students

Don't give me that "That's exactly how capitalism works" B.S. . This is a special offer for the schools football fans to go and cheer on their team in a bowl game. This isn't the commodity futures market. Wisconsin should have ABSOLUTELY ensured that these tickets were for STUDENTS to support their team.
]Now what? These student section tickets can go to anyone who has the money and that somehow makes it OK because of captialism? So TCU fans or wealthy football fans have a right to these special offer tickets based on their economic status because "That's how capitalism works"??

That's not capitalism stupid - that's taking advantage of a flawed system. Just like an inside trader or a Madoff ponzi schemer. Just because someone profits doesn't make it capitalism.

Wake the funk up.
