There's a new hat in the Miami coaching search's ring according to the Miami Herald , and it's not one most observers probably saw coming: Marc Trestman , current head coach of two-time defending Grey Cup champions Montreal Alouettes .

Not many major college programs have plucked their coaches out of the CFL , but there's a reason (besides his immediate success in America's hat ) the Hurricanes would take a long look at Trestman; he began his coaching career in Coral Gables, serving as a highly successful quarterbacks coach to Miami legend Bernie Kosar , a current university trustee.

Of course, that the latest Kosar was weaing the Hurricane orange was 1984 should tell you something about how many times Trestman has been around the block. He left Miami (with a UM law degree) that same season, embarked on an NFL coaching career, and hasn't spent more than two seasons (both producing iffy results as the N.C. State offensive coordinator in 2005-2006) in the college game since. The other finalists for the 'Canes job according to the Herald -- Randy Edsall, Al Golden, and perhaps Tommy Tuberville, on whom reports seem to differ -- are all substantially more involved with NCAA football.

But no matter how frayed they might be, Trestman's Miami ties (he also spent time with the Dolphins ), support from Kosar, and CFL success appear to have him in contention. Things can and probably will change by the end of the day, but for now, this is a candidacy that has to be taken seriously.

shalaha attempted to destroy the University of Wisconsin football back in the mid 80's when she was the troll on the hill here at the UW.  Fortunately for all Badger fans the alumni money guys from the 1959-62 Rose Bowl teams organized a revolt in the alumni donors forcing her to get rid of her AD choice, Ade Sponberg, and his handpicked 'coach', Don Morton, and replace them with Richter as AD who hired that fat bastard, Alvarez, and Wisconsin football made a resurrection.

A few years later Shalala left to destroy U of M football and has been largely successful at that since then.

Your best bet is to get rid of shalala and her minions before attempting to find a coach who has skills and a winning history.

good luck until then.

I will support the Canes no matter who gets the gig but why get the fans all excited with talk of a "homerun" hire than it turn out your three finalists are Edsall, Golden, and Trestman? Al Golden is the only name out of those three that will get the fanbase a little excited. Edsall is boring and Trestman is a nobody. Like the above poster said, it's hard being a Canes fan these days.

Nobody's going to hire Mike Leach or Jim Leavitt.  This is what happens when you sue the university that fires you, no other university is going to hire you.  Leach has been passed over for every job he's campaigned for and it will continue to happen until he drops that suit or its settled.  He is going to have to go back to a really small school or a no-win situation type job in order to rehab his image and show he'll accept discipline from his bosses.  Until then, he'll be on the outside looking in.... .just watch.

Mike Leach is STILL available. Donald Trump was trying to help the university, but they seem to have comprehension problems or something. If they seriously resort to hiring a coach from the CFL over Mike Leach, then Donna Shalala and the AD should both be forced out immediately. At the very least, Randy Shannon should file discrimination charges. I have no doubt Shannon is better than a CFL coach. However, Leach is the best coach on the market, and Miami refuses to even look in his direction.

Geez, if they hire Trestman, why even get rid of Shannon.  What a joke this coaching search is.  It is very hard to be a Canes fan these days!!!
