UPDATE: Auburn has confirmed that Malzahn will be staying at the school, and he's gotten himself a raise and a contract extension to boot.

It looks like there is more to life than money after all.

After reports surfaced over the weekend that Auburn offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn had accepted an offer that would pay him $3 million a year to be the new head coach at Vanderbilt -- reports that later became the offer has been made but Malzahn hadn't accepted anything -- it looks like Malzahn will be staying at Auburn for at least another season.

However, after contacting the Auburn athletic department, the school could neither confirm or deny that this report is accurate.

Obviously, if the report is correct, this is a bit of a blow to Vanderbilt, who seemed to think that Malzahn was coming.  Or, at the least, was really hoping he would come. Instead the Commodores will have to turn their attention elsewhere, perhaps to Maryland offensive coordinator James Franklin.

On the flip side, this is good news for Auburn and Gene Chizik.  Not having Cam Newton in 2011 would be a big enough obstacle to overcome, and losing the mastermind behind the Auburn offensive attack would have only made things worse.  Of course, just because Malzahn has turned down Vanderbilt, that doesn't mean it's a certainty he'll be back at Auburn next season.  After all, there are other coaching vacancies out there, and it's obvious that becoming a head coach is Malzahn's ultimate goal.

The question at this point becomes does the Pitt job hold any appeal to him, or will he prefer to stay at Auburn for another season and see what opens up next year.

It's true they should raise their academic standards but not all schools can have such high standards or many people wouldn't even make it to collage at all.  Second ,why should sec teams play outside their home areas  as away games when they have the toughest schedules of any conference. As far as the below 50degree thing, well, thats just luck to be stuck in a a warm climate area.  And those players who brake the law, thats not just in the SEC but you are right that if you break the law u should be out for the season no matter where you play. that should go for any conference and any school! One last thing, I am sure that the  SEC is not the only conference with cheaters, not even close!~

Gus Malzahn must be a very smart man, not guided entirely on ego. This Vandy job may be OK for a relative unknown or a guy on his way down but definitely NOT for a guy on his way UP like Malzahn. Please folks let's face it, if it weren't for the bowl money and the BBall tourney money which is shared equally by all members of the SEC, Vandy would have been gone long before now. The Vandy job is and always has been a coaching graveyard and as long as Vandy stays in the SEC, they will always be the ugly girl at the prom.

Leach to Vandy? Are you kidding? Have you guys ever been on the campus at Vandy? Vandy alums and coeds barely go to games because they have other interest in life like getting an education and being lawyers and doctors. Football is way down the list of priorities at Vandy. Vandy would not taint its reputation for the sake of winning. Vandy prides itself on being the best academic institution in the SEC and sees itself as the elite of the elite in the Southeast, hell the entire country. When Vandy comes to recruit a kid, the coaches ask right of the bat what is your GPA and what is your ACT/SAT score. If it is too low, they tell the kid that while he may be eligible according to the NCAA and SEC, Vandy will not accept student atheletes that do not meet Vandy's academic policies/requirements which are too say the least strict. Vandy has had to pass on some solid kids that went to other schools and did fine because the Vandy admin. would not budge one inch on its reputation of academic excellence. A degree from Vandy says academic excellence and the admin at Vandy will guard that at the expense of any sports. Yes Leach would bring media attention, but not the type Vandy alums want. Leach would never even be considered.

"Peopel need to lay off the SEC"...???  I have an idea, (1) raise your academic standards, (2) suspend your players when they break the law (3) feel free to play a BCS team on the road other than in a bowl and (4) play ANY game in under 50 degree temperature and then maybe we will "lay off".  As long as you puds keep bragging about how great you are... then you have to be willing to admit why you're actually successful.  Your other option is to stay quiet and the rest of us will respond in kind.

I don't blame Malzahn for saying no to Vandy. It is a tough job just to get Vandy bowl eligible. That being said, he might never get another chance to be a HC ever again. He is hot now but what if Auburn struggles next year? He better hope his star is still bright a few years from now.

The SEC giving out money,if true they are not alone! you think the Boosters down there in good ol' North Carolina basketball team doesn't share the wealth? it's not just a SEC problem its a NCAA problem all around! Let us not forget Reggie Bush in the PAC 10.  I also doubt that the  Michigan the Wolverines are all that clean either.  People need to lay off the SEC because they are not alone in Rules violations and paying players in what ever matter they can.  Just ask Grieg James and Eric Dickerson and the SMU Boosters and that was a religious school!
