Following a conference call on Friday, the writing seemed to be on the wall for Maryland head coach Ralph Friedgen.  Now that James Franklin had left for Vanderbilt and was likely to take a number of assistants with him, Maryland was no longer interested in bringing Friedgen back.  Now, a day later, there's a report that Friedgen will accept Maryland's buyout offer and will no longer serve as head coach.
University of Maryland football coach Ralph Friedgen has verbally agreed to a buyout of his contract and will not return for the 2011 season, multiple sources with knowledge of the situation confirmed to

Which means that Maryland is now in the market for a new head coach, and many people seem to think that former Texas Tech coach Mike Leach will be the school's first choice.  Though, if that is the case, Leach would go to Maryland with a bit of excess baggage in his hands thanks to the lawsuit he currently has filed against Texas Tech for wrongful termination.

As for Friedgen, it seems the school was worried about how Friedgen could perform after possibly losing so many assistants, and was also worried about recruiting considering that Friedgen would be entering 2011 in the final year of a contract the school didn't seem interested in extending.  So Maryland figured it was better to move on now rather than spend another year in limbo.

At the moment Friedgen is still expected to coach Maryland in the Military Bowl, but it's not clear whether he'll retire, take a job in the Maryland athletic department, or look for employment elsewhere.

Hope Maryland will get some games with national exposure. Mike Leach led teams are fun to watch. And they win, too. This is an outstanding hire.

Raplh Friedgn is a class act. He did a great job with Maryland and got the university back on the right track. Recruiting issuesat maryland hurt all programs here, not just the football team. If mike leach comes in as rumored , he may sell some seats at first and have a bit of success as raplh did early on , but he wont take Maryland anywhere raplh hasnt taken us.
Thanks and good luck coach!!!

Thanks Ralph, you did do a good job and put some stability in the program for a while.  It's hard to bring top line talent into Maryland on a consistent basis.  I would walk out with your head held high..not to mention your wallet a little fatter.  Good Luck....

I think it's time for a fresh start.  The Fridge will never be able to recruit enough talent to get them to be serious contenders.  And I'm glad it's not being turned over to Franklin.  His play calling was awful during the Fl St loss.  In the second half, they did not throw the ball down the field, but only running plays and swing/screen passes and were content punting it away until the last drive.  They could have played for an ACC title this year but he decided he didn't want to win a Saturday Night game on ESPN and was not aggressive, so the Seminals put everyone on the line and stopped them over and over .  So maybe a fresh start with a known coach will be enough to bring in some more talent, get people excited, and put them in contention for several years, and not by fluke for one season. Go Terps!

The Terps should go after Boise State coach, Peterson.  He's young, innovative and runs a clean program.  He can recruit, perhaps he can give Miami, Florida State and Virginia Tech a run for their money.

In what world is Purdue the Harvard of the Big Ten? It may very well be the WORST school academically in the Big Ten.
