Harbaugh: 'I haven't even discussed' new contract

Way back on December 6, we wrote of the contract extension offered by Stanford to Jim Harbaugh that "if he balks [at signing it], it's going to be the clearest sign possible that he's going to want to hear what [Michigan] (or NFL Team X) has to say."

It's now December 27, and not only has Harbaugh not signed the extension, he claims he hasn't even bothered to look at it :
“I haven’t even discussed it,” he told [the San Jose Mercury News] today.

That comment would seem to contradict what athletic director Bob Bowlsby said three weeks ago — that “Jim has indicated he plans to accept it.”

When I relayed Bowlsby’s comment to Harbaugh, he said: “Maybe he misspoke.”

If you are Bowlsby or Stanford, there is only one response to that: Ouch.

Because it's highly doubtful that -- even if Bowlsby was exaggerating when he claimed that Harbaugh was close to accepting the extension -- that Harbaugh isn't even aware of what Stanford is offering. The contract is out there, and whether he's "discussed" it or not, Harbaugh knows it. He's just not interested in putting his name on it just yet.

It's entirely possible he still does at some later date, of course. But with not one but two possible-bordering-on-probable landing places for Harbaugh should he decide to bolt, in both his alma mater at Michigan and now the vacant San Francisco 49ers head coaching job, it's clearer than ever that Harbaugh's in no hurry to limit his options now.

For the time being, Bowlsby and the Cardinal are just going to have to grin about their Orange Bowl berth and bear it. The rumor mill is going to be circling The Farm for a while.

Your angst is understandable. Harbaugh coming to U of M is MSU's worst nightmare. Get ready. He's coming.

Hey, whatever gets Harbaugh out of the PAC is fine in my book.  The guy has seriously undermined the class that was Stanford.

Harbaugh: 'I haven't even discussed' new contract

After talking to a few reliable sources the answer has surfaced: My aunt's cousin's niece's nephew used to shop at the same grocery store as Harbaugh's ex-gardener's uncle's brother-in law's 2nd cousin twice removed. Now according to her Jim is definitely on his way to Ann Arbor because she heard he was buying extra winter gear two weeks ago. But then again he was also spotted reading the real estate section of a local SF newspaper by my former brother-in-law's sister's best friend's piano teacher that used to give lessons to a student that attended the same elementary school as one of Harbaugh's children did three years ago.

Seriously people, nobody here has any credible information or knows Jim Harbaugh personally. You'll find out sooner or later and it won't be from Kirk Herbstreit or any member on here. HAHA!

Harbaugh: 'I haven't even discussed' new contract

Actually you bring you a superb point on the financial aspect of the consideration.  UM sure want more than filling its stadium seats (including the club seats).  As the donors and boosters cannot be less than furious w/ the RichRod disaster, DB cannot be dumb enough to hire somebody that won't create a big buzz AND make the donors rush to open their wallets again.

I sure hope Jim would come to A2.  A dark horse candidate would be Chris Peterson (he won't even blink to accept the offer IMHO).  Both will succeed without crying "I DON'T HAVE PLAYERS FOR MY SYSTEM" lame excuse.  And I am sure they are both man enough to skip "YOU RAISE ME UP" for the rest of human history.

ALL I WANT FOR CHRISTMAS IS ... JIM !!!!!!!!!

Harbaugh: 'I haven't even discussed' new contract

Dave Brandon won't say it, so I will.  I live in the Cincinnati area and have been a huge UM fan for years. Two weeks before the OSU beating, my wife had an appointment with a very prominent doctor here, who is a HUGE UM alum and HUGE financial supporter of the University of Michigan. She asked him what is going to happen to Rodriguez. He told her, that Dave Brandon met with several UM financial supporters over dinner and told them point blank, that Rich Rod is gone and Harbaugh is coming to UM.  He may deny it, but my wife called me right after her appointment to tell me, what her doctor told her.

It will be sad to see him leave the PAC 10/12. The NFL is a very good fit for him. I fear that Stanford will fall back to the lower half of the conference again, at least UCLA might be able to win against them again.

On Dave Brandon and recruits: There are good number of great recruits committing to Michigan.  So it's clear they love their to-be head coach, and it's so obvious it's not RichRod.  One thing I am sure: Somebody is lined up already.

On Harbaugh joining NFL: If I am him, I would jump to NFL.  The past pattern has shown that, even if an NFL head coach failed miserably, he could always land an good-to-great head coaching job at college level later.  However, if the head coach stinks at the college level, he's basically done.  Knowing Jim doesn't have a long history of top level head coaching experience, he's better off to join NFL now and use college as his safety net.  (As an UM Alumi: I hate that to happen of course).

Actually, the 49ers job is perfect for Jim.  Considering how weak NFC West is, if he could win 7-8 games in his 2nd year, 49ers would be in the playoff.  But then again, Jim has zero NFL experience, so it is no sure bet this would work out for him.

Harbaugh: 'I haven't even discussed' new contract

I love how Harbaughs name is still coming up for the Michigan job when he turned Michigan down last time they came calling asking about his services.

What more does he have to do for people to stop putting his name with the Michigan job?
