Leach interviews with Maryland 'went well'

We're only two days removed from Ralph Friedgen's final game at Maryland, a 51-20 throttling of East Carolina in the Military Bowl, and it seems as though Maryland is on the verge of finding its next head coach.  Mike Leach had been on campus both Wednesday and Thursday, looking around and interviewing with both athletic director Kevin Anderson and school president Wallace Loh.

While the Baltimore Sun say that no offer has been extended to Leach as of yet, according to the Washington Post the interviews "went well," and a report from College Football Talk says that an offer "could and should" be extended to Leach before the weekend is over, and he "appears to be the front runner" at the moment.

Which means that we may be only a few days away from everybody's favorite pirate returning to the sidelines.

Of course, Leach's name isn't the only one that has come up in connection with the Maryland job.  While he may be considered the odds on favorite to land the gig at this point, names like Gus Malzahn, Kevin Sumlin and Randy Edsall (is there a coaching vacancy in which Edsall's name doesn't come up?) are also considered candidates for the job.

This could be a great fit for Maryland and Coach Leach. He is known as the Pirate and would be closer to water and could realistically capt his own boat. Maryland just keep the sheds and electrical rooms under lock and do not give him the keys, and you should be safe from lawsuits. Oh one more thing, keep any video clips or newspaper away from him so he can not see anyones girlfriends or wives, it seems he has a fetish for short round women. :) Good luck, this could be an interesting story next year.

Leach interviews with Maryland 'went well'

After reading all of the crap regarding the Fridge and the Leach...I'm not sure what I think. Ralph was good for Maryland, but after those initial 3 years of 10 win seasons, things were never quite like that again.
Consider this...Maryland does not have a loyal fan base. The recruiting has been so-so. We seem to have to go to all over the country to get our players because the local talent doesn't want to play at home.
The stadium was full for perhaps only one game this entire season (Fla St). Maryland won only 1 of their "big" games (NC St). Their schedule was kind to them this year.
If Leach can coach, that's great. But there's the recruiting, the university politics, and the fickle fan base of which I myself am a participant.

I think the fridge was a good coach, glad to see him get a final victory.  Why is Leach so interested in any team that gives him the time of day.  He is a great offensive mind, but seems so desperate.  I have to believe that there is more about this situation than we know.  I would bet my bottom dollar on that!

Hated to see the Fridge was let go....kind of a shitty thing to do to this guy. Getting Leach should help ease the blow....Good luck guys

Marlyand has as good a shot as anyone in the ACC.  The recruiting ground is wide open.  Maryland is one of only a handful of schools in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic.  There is no reason that Maryland should be so poor at recruiting.  Only West Virginia and Penn State present any recruiting competition in a giant region of maybe 10-12 states.  Ralph Friedgen was arguably the worst recruiter in all of division-1 athletics despite his great Xs and Os mind.  I can see Maryland setttling into a steady diet of 9 win seasons in a very winnable ACC with an even AVERAGE recruiter.
