The real hardware Gene Chizik will be looking to hold won't be awarded until later tonight, but the Auburn head coach was already honored once Monday with the announcement of the 2010 Liberty Mutual Coach of the Year award winners.

Chizik joined K.C. Keeler, University of Delaware, Bob Nielson, University of Minnesota Duluth, and Glen Caruso, University of St. Thomas, as recipients of the annual award given for excellence in coaching on and off the field.

Since the award's beginnings, much of the focus has been placed on the various civic and charitable responsibilities of a head coach in today's college football.  Not only is "Community Commitment" one of the categories on which nominees are graded, but also the award comes with a $50,000 donation to the winner's cause of choice, as well as $20,000 in scholarship money for the university.

The award was presented at the Royal Palms Resort and Spa, in nearby Phoenix, Hall of Fame quarterback Archie Manning was on hand to represent the College Football Hall of Fame and assist in the award presentation.  The field is initially narrowed by a running fan vote that lasted through the regular season.  More than 1,000,0000 fans participated to narrow the field to a group of finalists.  The finalists were then chosen by a vote that was made up of 20% fan votes, 25% national football media members, and 55% by members of the College Football Hall of Fame.

Chizik, naturally, was not able to be at the award ceremony and pre-taped his acceptance.  He was with the Tigers as they are going through gameday preparations for tonight's BCS National Championship Game against Oregon at 8:30 PM in the University of Phoenix Stadium.

You're right, Chip Kelly is in a different league than Chizik - he has class and can coach players less than the best player in the country.  Wait till next year when Chizik has to coach a bunch of wannabes - let's see how he does without Cam.  I've never heard a coach win a big game against a team that was their equal that couldn't say anything (good or bad) about the team they just squeaked by and were lucky to beat.  Chizik should learn how to be a man, then we'll see how smug he can be when he takes 3rd place in the SEC next year.

Chip kelly

I try not to be a hater on people that winner awards.  I could care less about Oregon, but give me a break, Chip Kelly is in a different league next to this guy.  They aren't even on the same stratosphere.  Chip Kelly is playing with a bunch of goofballs while Chizik is just delegating to the greatest college player in 20 years.   Camon Man!

I don't agree with this decision. Why not the Miami (OH) coach? He didn't buy any players.

It truly saddens me to see this farce laid on top of a travesty. Im sure chizik is a good coach, but having the second coming of Reggie Bush is just wrong. I wonder what the odds are Mr computer theif keeping that trophy? On top of that having Dad getting caught having his hands in Mississippi State cookie jar is a joke. This is even worse than the Sugar Bowl decision 3 weeks ago. The NCAA is the biggest hippocritical group i've ever seen. How come these outrageous events don't happen in NCAA basketball??  It would be nice to see the teams playing on an even playing field. But you know what they say, if your not cheating your not trying.

That is pathetic that he won over Chip Kelly. Auburn is in the National Championship because of having Cam Newton, who is a great player and all deserving of the Heisman trophy, because he was strides better than every other player. Oregon is in the National Championship because their offense is so complex than teams just cannot possibly defend it. So how do you give the Coach of the Year to the coach who is just the beneficiary of having the great player? This is crap. Auburn has been a team of mediocracy for the past couple years and will be a team of mediocracy again after Cam Newton leaves. Chip Kelly's offense is unstoppable and it's not like they have an great offensive players. Sure, LaMichael James was nominated for the Heisman, but he wouldn't be this good in any other offense. When Oregon played UCLA, James went down with an injury in the first quarter and did not return the entire game. Oregon's 3rd running back Remene Alston came into the game and scored 3 touchdowns. It wasn't because he was that good, but the defenders had no idea who had the ball, because of all the fake and he had 3 easy touchdowns. Any player currently in college who plays an offense skilled position could come to Oregon and succeed. I'm sorry but Chip Kelly should have been your man for this award

Wow, it would be like giving the coach of the year to Mack Brown for giving the ball to Vince Young (except for $200,000 less).
