Norm Chow seems destined for Utah

Although UCLA says that he's still currently its offensive coordinator, all indications are that Norm Chow doesn't have much time left working for the Bruins.  At least, you wouldn't think so considering the team is reportedly hammering out a deal with former San Francisco 49ers offensive coordinator Mike Johnson.  Fear not for Norm Chow, however, for it seems that should he be replaced by Johnson in Los Angeles, he won't be out of a job for long.

While Rick Neuheisel is busy trying to replace Chow, Norm isn't just sitting around waiting for the axe to drop.  He's reportedly involved in talks with Utah about their offensive coordinator position.  It seems Kyle Whittingham wasn't exactly thrilled with the Utes' offensive performance down the stretch, and is looking to make a change.  Which is somewhat understandable considering Utah scored 68 points over its final five games, and 38 of those came in a win against San Diego State.

Chow has long been considered one of the best offensive coordinators in college football, though his time at UCLA has been pretty forgettable. He also has ties to Utah, where he played guard -- NORM CHOW WAS AN OFFENSIVE LINEMAN!? -- from 1965-67.  If he did return to his alma mater, it would make for some interesting matchups when the Utes move to the Pac-12 next season.

Once there he'd be facing two teams he used to work for in UCLA and USC, not to mention the fact that Chow also spent many years at Utah rival BYU, where he mentored guys like Jim McMahon, Steve Young and Ty Detmer.

UCLA fans had better hope that Neuheisels days are numbered.  Two 4-8 seasons sandwiched around a 7-6 season is all thin loser could produce in three years.  He insists on running an offense that dies not work with the personnel he has.  His defense gave up 60 to Oregon, 55 to Arizona State, and 35 to Stanford, at home.  Every year, he has tow or three key starters go down with pre-season injuries.  He also has 2 or 3 players suspended for criminal conduct.  Chow has forgotten more about offensive football than Neuheisel has ever known.  He has the ability to design an offense around the players he has to work with.  Chow would be a huge gain for Utah.  Firing both Neuheisel and A.D. Guerrero would be a huge gain for UCLA.

Sorry to hear Coach Chow may be on his way out at Ucla.  I hope he lands at Utah and I wish him the very best. From rumors around the team it was known that alot of the players went to Coach Chow more often than they did to head coach Neuheisel concerning team play. It's real easy to put a teams' failures on assistants instead of the head man.  Neuheisel will probably be more comfortable now that Coach Chow will not be around for advice from the players. I love the Bruins but I do not like what is going on internally.

Chow has said that this would be his last job.  I doubt he wants to go to another city, but he also planned on working for two more years.

He also had a legend as his boss at BYU in LaVell Edwards with a bunch of pretty good quarterbacks.  Young, Bosco, Detmer, Walsh and Sarkesian.  I'm not a Utah fan by any means, but I actually hope that Chow ends up there.  It'll be good for the program and he can go back to running his offense and not some quirky "pistol" offense.  I remember a quote from Ty Detmers first game he played with the Eagles after taking a vicous hit that rang his bell and I think it was Ricky Waters, "Ty got back in the huddle and started calling these really complex plays we had never seen or heard of, then we found out those were they plays he ran in college".

Rick was the one who wanted to implement the pistol. That's one reason I think he might fit @ Utah. Kyle Whittingham is a defensive minded coach and he is going to turn the offense over to Chow and let him do his thing, Time will tell

he might have been great but not anymore. When I saw UCLA went to Nevada to get it's new offense I thought why? Chow is the man so shouldn't other teams have been coming to him? Clearly he is not want he used to be if they had to go to another team for their offense. Good luck Norm might be time to retire. Nice guy but clearly his offense didn't work at UCLA so much so they had to look elsewhere.
