Ravens DC on way to Michigan?

UPDATE: It would seem that they're no longer just talks, considering that Baltimore has now promoted Chuck Pagano to replace Mattison.

It's not exactly a secret that Rich Rodriguez's downfall at Michigan -- aside from that whole Michigan Man malarkey -- was the team's defense in his tenure.  More specifically, the lack of defense.  It doesn't matter much that your offense can score 30 points a game when it's allowing 35.  So one of the first things that new head coach Brady Hoke has to fix if he wants to avoid Rodriguez's fate is the Michigan defense.

And all indications are that he's looking to the NFL to find the man to do it.  Several reports on Monday say that current Baltimore Ravens defensive coordinator Greg Mattison has had talks with Michigan about taking the same role there.

Mattison has ties to both Hoke and Michigan, as both have worked together under Jack Harbaugh at Western Michigan, and at Michigan under Lloyd Carr.  In his two seasons as Baltimore's defensive coordinator, where he replaced current Jets head coach Rex Ryan, Mattison's defenses finished third and tenth in the NFL.

If he can bring that kind of success to Ann Arbor, then it may not be long until Michigan is once again competing for Big Ten titles.  Though if he has any stuffed animals that he uses as motivational tools, he should probably leave them behind in Baltimore.  Maybe bring Ray Lewis and Terrell Suggs instead.

NFL DC have to understand that all of those schemes used in the NFL are too complicated for CFB players.  Great college defenses comes is a result of teaching players discipline, wrap up tackling. always go for the man first instead of the ball, play your area, and do not allow big plays.

Actually, Brady Hoke was the D-Line coach for the championship team. Mattison was D Line coach from 92'-94' and DC 95'-96'. Either way it's a HUGE hire for Michigan. Bring some defensive recruits wanting to get prepared for NFL and bring them back to glory.

Monte Kiffin is the former NFL DC, his Dad. Lane was an OC, and a giant rectal sponge

Lane Kiffin is showing that being a great NFL DC doesn't make you a great college DC.

It works out differently for everyone, Lane Kiffin is not an example of the norm.

I think that Mattison was the D Line coach for that National CHampionship team and only played a small role in the defensive coordinator position.

Mattison would be a great addition. He was the DC on Florida's 2006 national championship team and has been successful at every school he has coached at the collegiate level, not to mention his experience with the Ravens.

Lane Kiffin is showing that being a great NFL DC doesn't make you a great college DC. USC defense sucked this year. Totally different game with all the spread passing offenses in college vs NFL. Same thing why a QB who never plays under center has problems as NFL QB. Just very different systems faced. Since these NFL DC's don't coach against spreads like in College they have to learn to beat it. Be better for Michigan to hire a great college DC who shows he can stop college offenses.
