It seems as though nobody wants to play TCU these days. The school is in a bit of a bind with its 2011 schedule as both BYU and Utah will be leaving the Mountain West, leaving two open dates, and Boise State is trying to get its date with the Horned Frogs moved from Fort Worth to Boise. Then there's Texas Tech. Texas Tech was scheduled to play TCU in 2010, but when ESPN decided it wanted to air Tech's game with Texas on the same day, the Red Raiders dropped the game. ESPN then helped set up TCU's game against Oregon State.
Well, Texas Tech's decided it enjoyed not playing TCU so much in 2010, it's going to do the same thing in 2011, as the Raiders have once again dropped TCU from the schedule. News that TCU AD Chris Del Conte doesn't sound all that thrilled to hear.
"It's a done deal for sure," Del Conte told the Star-Telegram. "Nothing has been determined for the future; we're negotiating that right now."
"To me it was a little late in the game [to change the schedule]. They knew Nebraska was going to the Big Ten eight months ago. We would have had more time [to find a new opponent] if they had told us earlier. It's disappointing we couldn't make the game work. I did everything possible."
The reason Texas Tech backed out of the game is because the new Big 12, the one with ten teams, will be playing a round robin conference schedule in 2011. Which means the amount of conference games increases from eight to nine, and that eliminates one non-conference game. So when looking at its slate of non-conference games next season, Tech saw TCU, New Mexico and Nevada and decided to say sayonara to TCU.
Texas Tech says it hopes to reschedule the game sometime in the future. No doubt it's hoping that TCU is a bit weaker by then.

Texas Tech ditches TCU game...againSo it makes no sense for Tech to play a road game against TCU, without a contract in place to oblige TCU to return the favor. But again, Tech has been trying to redo the contract.
Are you trying to tell me that because there was not a "home and home" it made no sense? How dare Tech look out for their own well being. This makes perfect sense, does it not? I'm so fired up after this demostration of selflessness that I'm writing the Governor. How could BSU even consider turning down a 2 (come to my place twice and we'll buy out our trip for a home game against South Dakota State) for 1 with Nebraska? Nebraska would tell you that those guys at Tech were not, cowards, just looking out for their best interest. It's just business, not beiing a pussy. |

Texas Tech ditches TCU game...againThey dropped TCU because there was no contract to have a return home game. Here is a section on rivals that discusses it.
ESPN maneuvered to get the Tech - Texas game moved to the date which Tech was scheduled to host TCU. All parties agreed to have that game postponed in order for the nationally television matchup. ESPN even brokered a deal for TCU to get Oregon State at Cowboys Stadium and a new opponent for TCU...Tennessee Tech. At that time TCU was very interested in having a nationally televised game in Arlington and they were more than happy to give up the Texas Tech game to get it done. What is not reported in that article however is when the change was made in 2010, it voided the contract between Tech and TCU. Yes the game remained on the schedule but there was no contract in place to ensure a return trip by the Frogs. And also, the voided contract stated the game would be played at Amon Carter Stadium which is not really an option because of ongoing construction. So in essence, the game remained on the schedule but there was no contractual obligation on either side to play it. Tech knew this and acknowledged as such when we talked with Gerald Myers in the fall. Tech had actually reached out to TCU to do a new contract, a home and home, to be scheduled for a couple of years down the road. Tech officials have still not heard back from TCU officials about this. So it makes no sense for Tech to play a road game against TCU, without a contract in place to oblige TCU to return the favor. But again, Tech has been trying to redo the contract. |

Texas Tech ditches TCU game...againTexas Tech is in flux right now after the Leach firing. They know they can't beat TCU. Even without Andy Dalton, Gary Patterson's team will be plenty solid enough to handle TT. It worked pretty well for Oregon the year they decided not to schedule Boise State.

Texas Tech ditches TCU game...againHere's an idea for TCU: call BYU up and see if they can get a game with the Cougars.
OH, WAIT... Coach Patterson said that he'd never schedule BYU again for leaving the MWC. OH WAIT.... TCU is leaving the MWC as well. Maybe it's okay now... ...Especially because if TCU plays BYU, they will be able to get on national television, given BYU's sweetheart deal with ESPN. |
