What does it take to win a national championship? In order to keep preserve Cam Newton's eligibility, Auburn University was willing to shell out six figures.

The Birmingham News reported Wednesday that Auburn has spent approximately $170,000 in attorney fees during the ongoing Cam Newton NCAA investigation. Lightfoot, Franklin, White LLC, the school's Birmingham-based legal counsel has once again pulled in the big bucks defending a high profile NCAA investigation.

Michigan paid the same firm $600,000 during its recent infractions case, and Connecticut paid $338,000 over 12 months during the investigation of the Huskies basketball program.

As the report details, spending such a large amount of money for legal counsel is not unusual with such a high profile investigation. After all, Auburn was competing for a national championship - a reward that holds no price tag in the hearts of Tiger fans.

However, if you are measuring dollar amounts against each other, it should be noted that Auburn's need for legal assistance is likely far from complete. The NCAA has issued no ruling to completely close the Newton case at Auburn. Some would assume with Newton gone, the trouble would go away. But after a Heisman Trophy and National Championship, this story isn't fading away any time soon.

theone,  you make very good points about AU owning bama as of late. Bases on the posts, i agree that the bama fans on here are not able to take it and sound like children that have just had their icecream knocked out of their hand.

hahaha... u have no room to be calling us anything related to homosexuality when the picture you have on your profile is a BAMA player standing behind another man, touching his ass. the man is also on all 4's so i guess its a good thing that it's a picture instead of a video. if it were a video we would probably see the BAMA player enter him. im not sure what u are into, but at AU we like penetrating offensive lines, not mens asses.

you are such an idiot!!! you want to refer to the last decade because Au beat Bama 6 times in a row, but you go back to 93 to mention an undefeated season, of course with a big probation asterisk on it!! i know more about your beloved little team than you will ever know dumbone!!! In fact, I have probably spent more time there than you have or ever will.

I refer to football. All of it! Are you 15 years old and can't remember anything other than the last 10 years? As far as your team not being a failure your whole life, I forgot i was speaking to an Au fan. I know there is a very thin line between failure and success on the plains. Don't take much for an Auburn fan to think they are successful. If you guy's could put together 3 seasons in a row like bama has the last 3, I don't think the world could handle the mouthing and greatness from you guy's.

1 more thing, Bama beat Au 10 years in a row and won 3 national titles in those 3 years. Auburn finaly beat Bama and went on to do something with it, eventhough they cheated to do it and will soon have it all taken away.

face it you guy's are losers and I don't recall a single person from another school congratulating Au for there cheated up season. Who would have ever thought Au would receive national attention? Unfortunately it's not the attention you want to receive.
Ironbreaker said it best the other day in another post keep note he is a husky fans. he said" AUBURN couldn't hold Bama's jock strap"!!!

that hurts alotCry...i guess you have a high opinion of me there boss man..lol. i am not too big to admit that BAMA has more NC's than AU. you say you guys are considered in everyone eyes to be far superior to us, however, you have been far from that the last decade which is the time frame that im referring to. not sure how you are superior to us when we have beat you 8 out of the last 11 games. maybe the history of your program has more to show than AU. your statement about AU has failed every YEAR in my life is far from correct. do your research before you pull statements out of your ass. undefeated in 93', 04'(screwed out of NC game), and then of course this year. you are not going to like the fact that we have owned you the last decade so of course you are going to refer to total NC's as opposed to the last the decade, just as im going to talk about the last decade as opposed to NC's. we could go back and forth forever on this but lets just agree to disagree. i so anxiously await your response.

Cam had a questionable past but has been nothing but a class act since he stepped on the AU campus.  I truly believe that Auburn helped him as much as he help us.

Jeez, Charlie Sheen and Lindsay Lohan couldn't get into trouble in that pathetic burg.  When you play and live in a place that's past the end of the road 9 miles, outside the backside of nowhere and downwind from the Billy Beer Brewery, you gotta behave.  Besides, most of his teammates probably never saw a laptop.

If he did do wrong, some Auburn alum would bail him out, and the university would probably demand an apology, not prosecute.  If they weren't mostly closet South Georgia people there would be no accounting for their total lack of logic.
