Auburn spent $170k on legal fees for Newton case

What does it take to win a national championship? In order to keep preserve Cam Newton's eligibility, Auburn University was willing to shell out six figures.

The Birmingham News reported Wednesday that Auburn has spent approximately $170,000 in attorney fees during the ongoing Cam Newton NCAA investigation. Lightfoot, Franklin, White LLC, the school's Birmingham-based legal counsel has once again pulled in the big bucks defending a high profile NCAA investigation.

Michigan paid the same firm $600,000 during its recent infractions case, and Connecticut paid $338,000 over 12 months during the investigation of the Huskies basketball program.

As the report details, spending such a large amount of money for legal counsel is not unusual with such a high profile investigation. After all, Auburn was competing for a national championship - a reward that holds no price tag in the hearts of Tiger fans.

However, if you are measuring dollar amounts against each other, it should be noted that Auburn's need for legal assistance is likely far from complete. The NCAA has issued no ruling to completely close the Newton case at Auburn. Some would assume with Newton gone, the trouble would go away. But after a Heisman Trophy and National Championship, this story isn't fading away any time soon.

totally agree with your other post, but your stereotyping "southern ministers" makes your righteous beliefs on amateur sports lose a lot of their luster.  Not all of them are pimps, crooks or Hollywood stereotypes, no more than all Badgers are slow, ugly, pasty white, fat boys with very small penises.

$170k seems to be the common figure when it comes to Cam Newton.Laughing

@AES... guessing form your avatar you are from Chicago - as am I.  As for being surprised that "Southern Minister" isn't synonomous with the word "PIMP" means you don't or haven't lived down here in the South.   They are indeed one and the same.  Don't worry though, all you have to do is say that "you've NOW found the light" and they will bring you back in with open arms.

Some of you are pretty cold and I really have to question your "business ethics."  No doubt the ROI was great but that's like saying you had a great business plan with phenomenal margins by convicing old people to give up their social security checks.  Yeah, you made money and it was technically legal but it certainly wasn't the right thing to do.  Let the "you're just a hater" and the "ends always justify the means" rants against this post start right about... NOW!

I have to agree with the consensus here, the money that AUB spent defending him was well spent.  They ( AUB ) will have made a million or more from all the fan fair of winning the big one, not to mention the recruiting boost they will get.

Cam's daddy? Ohhhh....you mean his pimp! The "Reverend" Cecil Newton! You confused me there for a minute. See, I always thought a father would step in and prevent his child from being sold like a working girl. It never crossed my mind that it would be the parent putting Junior on the stroll.

And even if they are stripped later I do not think they will have to give the money back.

$170K (plus whatever AU paid Cam's daddy) is chump change for a National Championship and Heisman Trophy. I'd say that it was money well-spent! The ROI is off the charts.
